Don't panic, you're allowed the file sharing program, you're just not allowed to be sharing any files on it.
To my knowledge, you can download shared files, so long as you don't share the files yourself, thus you are not a 'pirate' because you don't trade stolen goods.
However, if this has somehow changed due to the America's constant mind flares, then so long as you have no mp3's on your computer or in the file sharing program, you can claim you were using the program to download updates for programs that could no longer be reached. Or, with kazaa, you were using it to download games you have bought, which is what the program is sometimes used for.
Besides to my knowledge, this law is only in USA with it's backwards thinking. They don't realise that probably 50% of people listening to their music are those who download them for free. The 50% they get from people buying albums is enough to pay for production and make them rich, they're just being greedy.

Also people use it to get uncommen things. Like video game music.

I remember one time I was downloading a video, and when I looked to see if it was done, I looked down, and it said, KazaaManager@kazaa.com, or something like that, and I thought no, must be just a person named that, then I looked at info and it said a Offical Kazaa manager  Maybe he was trying to get me!
|EDIT| Wheres that website that says if your on the list or not?

Reading the above link it seems the obvious solution is to simply have an empty dir for sharing files.
That sorta reduces the whole idea of kazaa and file sharing progs. However id rather not give riaa a chance...

Surely you can just download the files then transfer them to a different directory, like 'My Music' or somthing, and delete them from 'My Shared Folder'?

As far as I can see, there is hardly any risk at all of being caught. As long as you move files from My Shared Folder, which nearly everybody does anyway, you're safe.
On a more negative note, I think it's only a matter of time before file sharing utilities are banned altogether. Even then, though, it would take an age to check every computer in the world and see if they have one installed.
I'm not that worried, but I'm going to stop file sharing anyway, in case there's something we're not being told. In case they have some other way of seeing if we share files...
(note "..." is supposed to be mysterious)
Bloody hell, I do waffle, don't I?

on latest versions of kazaa lite theres a feature which automatically blocks known connections from the RIAA.
On a more negative note, I think it's only a matter of time before file sharing utilities are banned altogether.
thats never gonna happen, new technology will always come out which makes filesharing more secure and undetectable.
I think being in Britain makes me immune to the RIAA. Wonder how long for though?

International issues regarding the Internet and copyright protection are still under debate. It is not wise to hope that you are protected because you live outside the States, because if the RIAA have their way, they'll work on proving that copyright ownership extends internationally, and then go after you.
They are currently only focusing on those "large number" file sharers within the States to the best of my knowledge, those who have 100s or 1000s of files out to be shared.

Surely if you had 100's or 1000's of songs you would know better than to share your files tho?
If you have the knowledge and time to download that many songs or programs, then im sure they know what they are doing... and therefore, the RIAA wont catch many of the people they NEED to catch, with MILLIONS of songs, because they know how to go about keeping their files in a non-shared folder, lol.
That 12 year old girl that got sued, that was proper sickening. She had downloaded some cute little songs and some lullabies to teach her little brother!!! I bet she didnt have 100's or 1000's...
Everyone who downloads songs should be scared about the RIAA no matter where you live. If you are saying you're not, thats like saying you werent scared when USA got attacked by terrorists, the whole world held their breath!! I mean... who is to say you wont be next?? Same with the RIAA... who said you arent next? :);)
