there seems to be a huge abundance of fellow bassists in here, which is surely a good thing, so why not share pics and general bass banter!!!!
my pic will come asap as my bass is a custom shop ESP jazz bass with a series pot to make it go into a p-bass sound (just like the new fender S1) and ive just ordered a new bass being the SUB5 by music man (black with a metal scratch plate) and the K5 is my dream bass at the mo but no where has one in stock!!!! DAMN!!!!:weebl:

nice bass btw, do like the yamaha's sound just never could get used to the string positions, i prefer more gap between strings

Hmm...
Id recommend not double(++) posting anymore...

Anyways,
Yeah, Yamaha has a nice sound.
I prefer the strings closer together - mostly because im very small, and therefore have small hands that cannot stretch too far :p

Yes we are! You could also say that all the best bassists are people, but thats a less impressive statement :p
The keyboard at the bottom of the pic is my desktop one, a handy rest for my camera, if thats what you are refering to! Or the fact my bass is in my lap...
I am still waiting delivery of my laptop, my own place of work and its taking so long!

in a music class i had to play bass for a couple of my friends once.

they were supposed to be doing a trio with the bassist in their actual band but he was in the other class and not available

so they approached me with ten minutes before they performed infront of the class (it was a song by the Red hot chili peppers, can't remember the name) and asked me if i could play bass for them

i told them i didnt have a clue how to play bass or any other guitar for that matter, but with a lot of persuasion i finally gave in and played a pretty damn hard part in my opinion (but then, im a novice)

i thought that the guitar was ace and ive been playing the acoustic ever since.

so in truth i have played bass before, so does that make me a bassist and one of the greatest breeds in the world?

Have you got the chilled attitude of a bassist? and do you radiate coolness? If yes you are a bassist at heart and should be playing bass, not acoustic. Also kudos on learning a chillies song in ten minutes. I sound like someone recruiting for the home guard or summet.

I hate you all. I've just bought an Ibanez SRX305 Soundgear (see pickchore), and before it's even got here you've shown me up.

http://www.musikland-online.de/pix/onlineshop/ebass350485315.jpg

On the other hand, give me six months, and I will have a nicer bass than anyone else on the planet (in my humble honest opinion), when I finish my bass off. It's based (heh) on the pedulla rapture, fully made of top grade mahogany that's been seasoned for about 60 years (an antique tabletop), except for the fingerboard, which is ebony.

That bit's done.
Next I have to buy the Schaller or Gotoh bridge and tuners, silver for the celtic knots and dragon inlays, a professional finish (possibly from Hugh Manson, the lutheir who makes all of Matt Bellamy [Muse]'s guitars), and Bartolini pickups and electrics.

This is how far as I've got

Woo! I'd love to make my own bass, I have a full scale plan done but not sure how to go about it. My dad is a joiner, we have a workshop full of equipment so its possible.
How are you building yours? It's looking good!

Get this book: Make Your Own Electric Guitar- Melvyn Hiscock.

If I were you, I'd have a go at designing my own shape, and base it on the plan you have, so use all the neck dimensions etc. but design your own body and headstock shape. More personal that way.

It can be quite cheap to do, but I thought that if I was going to put the work in, I might as well use the absolute top notch in components and techniques all the way through hence expensive woods and silver inlays (which I'm going to have to do myself, to an extremely complicated celtic knot pattern, and then a little stylised Welsh Dragon back where the bolt plate would go.

A little hint: if you want to use mahogany, you have to be very patient, and possibly have quite a bit of stamina. It took me 45 mins to cut a 14 degree angle onto my neck blank, which was a cut about 10cm wide and 8cm deep. Admittedly I was using a blunt saw. Oh yeah, and sanding mahogany is horrible. It takes YEARS, and I'm allergic to dust too. Not so good as mahogany, being a dense wood, has a very fine and slightly toxic dust.

I'm not very good at short answers. Sorry

Ill look for that book, thanks!
I have a body and head designed, I drew up the plan :D
I was planning on making some pattern in it, I used to do maquetry and want to do some on it.
Machining should be ok due to all the tools my dad has.
Thanks again! :D

Dude, just got my new Ibanez BTB the other day. I'd heard nothing but good stuff about them, and I can see why - its immense! I looked at the K5, but in the end, I prefer the tone on this one. Anyone actually want pics? Because if not, I'm too lazy to take them :D

hi i play the guitar but hve been seriously considering taking up the bass. ive heard that its not just a simple switch instruments thing and that its harder than it seems.... anyone got any advice for me??

fleisch
19-04-2004, 09:49 AM
its not just a simple switch, different beast altogether, whilst being a guitarist you could blg playing bass pic style walking bass is a different game, try looking up finger excersises or getting the bas book by bass guitar magazine, awesome purchase that, will send photo in when i get back to uni, in the mean time try going to a music shop and trying out begginner basses. to do a simple walking line rest your thumb on the rear pickup or if playing a string apart from E, then rest it on the string above, this will mute the string as your finger will brush it from time to time, now just walk yuo fingers on the E-string, trying out differetn metronomical beat patterns, and form there youll discover iron maiden, excellent music to learn rhythm from. oh another thing, dont try chilli peppers for at least a year, itll only depress you!!! but good luck!! let us know how you big bad bass advernture goes!

It's really not that difficult. When I decided to play bass a few months ago, I didn't have access to one, so I learnt a few basslines on guitar, then stole my friend Ed's bass to 'fix' it (I convinced him it was cocking up by testing it through a dodgy cable). Within two days of just playing around, I could play all of these ( Muse: Hysteria, Time Is Running Out, Sing For Absolution, Newborn, Bliss, Plug In Baby. RHCP: Higher Ground (yes, slap!) Californication, Soul to squeeze, Road Trippin' etc. and a few Incubus tracks, as well as the compulsory Seven Nation Army)

Anyway, my point is, if you're a pretty good guitarist, with a good sense of time and a nice tight playing style, you should get the hang of it quite quickly. Having big hands helps. If you don't, you can get a shorter scale bass, but they tend to sound a little less alive due to the shorter string. Playing fingerstyle acoustic or piano would help alot too, I'm sure.

well done, but to be fair to bass muse isnt that challenging as good as the musci might be! oh and chilli peppers gets much kudos if you can slap it properly im impressed

Yeah. Shame this topic's not had any replies for a while. I'd post pics of my Ibanez which should have beenhere by tomorrow or friday. course what they MEANT was that they'd dispatch it by tomorrow or friday. Fking inefficient krauts :(

disclaimer: The word 'kraut' is not used as a derogatory term for germans in general in this case, just those germans who should get their fking act together so I get my guitar!

P.S: thatnks for the compliment. I did have to look up how to slap properly online, coz I was doing it wrong, but I got it after a couple of frustrating hours

My Bass... It's a Peavey C4 and isn't exactly amazing for slap but it gets the job done for now and it's got a through neck and 24 frets so I'm happy for now because most basses I've played just...don't...go...quite...high...enough for solos and the like but I really do need to upgreade but I'm mildly short on funds at the mo so can't get my dream bass custom built quite yet

same with me, both me and a friend are guitarists but because we don't actually have a bassist we change to it when it's needed, i learnt run to the hills by iron maiden on guitar then got onto a bass and had no problems

I had a very nice black 1979 P-bass with maple neck and chrome 'ashtrays' for a few years, which I had to sell to pay the mortgage, which was a bloody mistake because 3 months later I had to sell the house anyway when I split up with my wife. Hindsight is wonderful...
It was a great sounding bass but it had to be the heaviest thing I ever played, you would have sworn the damn thing was made out of granite. I know Fenders were pretty inconsistent in the 70's but this was rediculous. The original owner got rid of it because he had a serious bad back from gigging with it. The pic isn't very clear, but it's the only one I've got:(

Oh nearly forgot to include a pic of my pride and joy for the last 10 years- my '62 reissue Jazz bass. I put a set of Bartolini stacked humbuckers in it. This has the fastest action in the world in my experience! Don't ask why there's a picture of a pair of jeans on the wall next to it because I haven't a clue any more.

I want one so bad, the problem is, there are none for sale cause they are custom made and they cost a ton. If you are too lazy to go the actual website, here is the rainbow bass, only one in the world and it is owned by Les Claypool (bassist from Primus and many other side bands)

fleisch
16-05-2004, 11:26 AM
yeah but the point is that you reach a stage of bas greatness where the companies such as ct and esp and zon just give you an endorsement and a complementary bass every now and again. les claypool is one of the most innovative bassists around and deserves twnty ofthose bad boys, the only way to get your mitts on these im afraid is through hard giging and pimping of your bass skills, or be damn rich!!!!!!!!! try looking at gecko basses for cheaper but just as good style and sound, plus they are all custom!!

I took up bass before I played 6-string electric guitar thinking it was 'easier'. It is not. I now play various guitars, including bass, which I do fairly well, but I'm no Jaco Pastorius. I wouldn't have been able to play 'ordinary' guitar if I hadn't started off as a bassist because riffing on those big fat bass strings at speed makes strumming a set of 10-guage strings on a strat seem like a walk in the park. Lazy man's guitar it is not! :D
