Do you prefer rock or pop?

I like rock lots more because... well.... pop singers are just ugly whores dancing around singing like a mixture of cats + trumpets

or: do you like muse, radiohead,(that sorta shiz) or justin trousersnake, J-hore + britney spear-up-her-arse?

It's not a terribly fair vote.

There's more to music than just rock and pop you know.

The hip-hop fans will NOT be happy :p

This whole poll is based on the assumption that everyone agrees on the same definition for 'rock' and 'pop.'

I have to say I like rock much more than pop, however I don't like a lot of the 'rock' music that is played around and sold in the world today. A vast majority of the bands that play 'rock' music are stupid teenage American bands trying to make a quick buck. Most of these bands can be found playing crappy teenage rock music for crappy teenage movies. Which just shows how big a sell out they all are.

Rock is much deeper than this idea of smashing loud noises out of a guitar and screaming about some slut they met in a hotel and how they had their heart broken.

Rock is about the lyrics, and the melody and the atmosphere of the music all melded into one. For example, A perfect circle and Tool are two bands that don't have a large supporter base. Their music is rock, and the lyrics are almost always so deep and meaningfull, well beyond anything that bands like blink 182 or Greenday or Linkin Park can manage. The atmosphere of the music isn't always loud guitar music as well. One of APC's songs is a simple acoustic guitar plucking away with a light drumbeat in the background for a good 4 minutes and MJK singing before it launches into it. Atmosphere, melody, lyrics.

As for pop, well any definition of pop is shit.

I just listen to the music I enjoy and ignore the music I don't regardless of genre.

Well said. Who cares what genre it's in if you like it. Besides, in olden times Nirvana were the "pop" music scene. Just listen to what you like.

you cannot really compare the 2 genres because they have different styles.

and as some1 said before there are more than 2 genres of music out there, there are countless genres from classical to gangsta rap. its a wide spectrum, and people like what you like, if any1 gives you shit its their problem. mind my french

OMG POP SUCKS SO MUCH LOLZORSROFLMAO!!!11!!1111!!!ONEONETWO!1!!

Seriously, you lost any sense of credibility when you connected Punk to Rock. They're 2 different genres. It's not like Rock and pop are the only existing genres. I can name at least 10. Jeesus.

Then you went on to use the word "batty" and suggest that pop is something you "do". Do get a brain before you molest the forums with this crap.

This is only a problem if you let 'the charts' guide your life in respect to music. Most of the top stuff in the charts is crap anyway dictated by shallow teenagers anyway.

Anyway, whether a song/genre is good or not is personal opinion.

its a conspiracy lead by key pop singers bribing the chart dudes!

If I saw any of my favorite bands on the charts, I'd consider them popular. I consider Greenday pop by the way.

I like rock better because... well... I like the sound of it better, as in, I think pop is waaaaayyyyyy too sythnesised and I just like the sound of drums and guitars etc.

And pop singers and what-not are just that, they only sing. Even if there's 5 people in a group, they only sing. They don't play their own instruments and their voices are usually crap anyway and are changed with computers. They're only pretty faces - where as with rock, I've seen some pretty aweful looking people (its insulting, I know, but it's true) yet I like their music better.

I like music for the music, not for the face that makes it. :)

rock,
pop is just little kiddie music, pop is too marketed and fake
i just love rock anyway, i love crafted music and those who write and perform their own material.
a good reason why i hate pop, look at all the crap out there, s-club juniors (what the hell was that about???) its made by the managers and the performers have little if any imput into it, its typically younger people chosen for the way the look and not just performance based and its aimed and sold to little impressionable kids

everyone has different definitions of pop as someone said previously.

if you had to put it under the most general of terms, however, i would be a rock person.

pop isnt a genre of music; its just simply what type of music is popular. Rock can be a type of pop; for instance The Darkness.

Smartie Popper!
27-10-2003, 11:26 AM
that's what it *literally* means..but does anyone really use that meaning anymore?

The White Stripes and The Strokes are popular, but I would never class them as pop.

I treat pop as it's own genre..as do most people.

Jeff The Jiff
27-10-2003, 01:45 PM
pop doesnt have an exact sound though; it could be anything, as long as it has a certain type of melody and rhythm and band/group line-up.

*sigh*
music genres suck.
no one can agree on the exact definition of any of them.
to me its just music, i dont give a shit if its hip-hop, rock, electronica, jazz or whatever.
