View Full Version : 56k Plea

Now, a quick scan of this forum and I'm plagued with [56k fuck off], [56k? Not on the list mate], [56k-ers are bum chums!] and so on.
Get my drift?
Now, Being a humble villager with no access to anything really above 56k, I request that some people actually make use of their 'l33t photoshopping skilz' and create an smaller jpg image.
I tend to use -
Landscape - 480x360
Portrait - 360x480
then selecting "Save a copy", then tending to have an image size at around 52k-90k, It's slightly more friendly to us lowly modem users.
Have an example from a Weebl and Bob meet up, of me and iPete stocking up on food.
Note the 4 packs of pies.

Having a 56k dosen't mean you can't see stuff, it just means that it'll take ages to load, and if some pics are too large, it can time out before loading them.

I think people should save their images to be under 50Kb. Its easily doable (sp???), and there shouldn't be any major drop in quality.
Plus, it would save Weebl a lot of space on the server.
But I don't care anyway, cause I'm a 512k-er :)
edit: Maybe 50Kb is a bit too low, but definitely under 100Kb...

Try to stick to the rules on B3ta (http://www.b3ta.com)
How large can my image be in kilobytes?
On a board like this there can be a lot of individual images. There is little need for a file size over 50k most of the time, maybe 150k for animations. This is by no means definitive, but certainly multiple images of 250K+ is unnecessary.
For the guys on a dial-up, it's a nightmare to get that amount of stuff down the pipe.
If you really can't bear to make the fruits of your genius any smaller, a good idea is to post a thumbnail of it on the board, along with a link to the full-size version.
Those rules always seemed good to me...
I'd even go further and say images around 30 kb, unless details dictate a big pic and 150 kb tops for animations...
Above that, link, so people can choose to view it, and still can read the thread
im so glad when i get back to uni and have a propper connection, when it home i too am a vilage 56ker, but i dont tend to post huge pics....aaahhh how i love my current connection.

The thread with the words [56k must die] offended me.
They should read this thread.
it should be bigger than any other thread in the world.

I find it strange that you're offended by it. Ok, the description may be a bit harsh once in a while (56k die!!!) but really it's just there as a warning. You know that if you get online these days with a 56k connection you'll need more time to load big files. Putting a warning in the thread title makes browsing the forums easier for you guys, preventing any nasty surprises like your browser thinking real hard for 15 minutes before loading pics of somebody's manly nipples.
Ofcourse it would be nice if we all take into account that some people can't cope with large files, but to be honest I usually don't check the filesize, I just take care the dimensions don't require a 32" wide screen tv and that's about it...
i absolutely refuse to post in this thread just to feed your sense of anger and bitterness and downright jealousy of those more fortunate beings who have a nice and spangly connection

oh come on it's forum tradition fo append the titles with some 56k warning. it's a bit of a joke. no reason to get your panties in a wad.
*edit* because beef magic seemed to think i was pissing on his parade. this section with the links was suggested viewing for people who do not have photoshop or other photo imaging software **DIsclaimer : by the word 'you' i mean John Q forumite, not beef magic.
if perchance your pic happenes to be a gif...here is a nifty free online pic editing site. gifworks (http://www.gifworks.com./cgi-bin/gifworks.pl?com=transfer_open) i have used this extensively.
i found this jpeg one but i have not tried it. jpeg editor (http://www.jpegwizard.com/)
and here is a link to supposedly free photoediting programs. Top 6 Free Photo Editors for Windows (http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/imageediting/tp/freephotoedw.htm)

I am completely justified in saying read the thread you fucking knobs
I cannot get Broadband. For love nor money. I live in a village with no access to Broadband, alright? Even if I did, then neither I nor my family could not afford it, due to the fact that I do not have a job, and I'm not some fucking rich kid who's parents work in some wonderful MD's job.
And the [56k must die] quote was a joke. Anyone with a vague sense of humour would get it. Stop contaminating this thread.
And who said I was whining about not having Photoshop? Considering I explained what to do in the first post, I think that's a pretty blank statement in saying I have a version of it.

Calm down, you're getting a little emotional about a couple of pictures.
Tom was only suggesting that you could get broadband, he wasn't telling you to. How is he supposed to know you can't get broadband, he isn't psychic! (...or maybe he is :ninja: )
Just calm down.
P.S You don't need to be a "rich kid" to get broadband, it isn't actually that expensive.

The irony for me is, that broadband will be cheaper than paying for a 2nd phone line+isp which Is what im doing now.

If your computer is decent (as in processer speed, memory, etc.), won't your computer perform rather decent, even on a 56K? I know people that play games online with 56K and they have practically no lag...:weebl:
I see where you're coming from, though, 56K was no fun for me :(

I went and edited to make it more obvious that i was not refering to you specifically.

Ok. First of all, chill out.
Second of all. Realise that the hot tub is generally a picture dominated forum where users post lots of pictures of anything and everything. The majority of people who use the internet use broadband. Those who don't are just unlucky. The people with dial up aren't banned from the threads with a 56k warning, but should be prepared to deal with the longer loading times.
For pity's sake, the 56k warnings are there to tell users with dial up that they're going to take a long time to download the page. It's unfortunate that you have to wait, but it isn't our problem.
This may sound harsh, but when most people favour a 640x480 or larger format then you are just going to have to put up with it for the time being.
It's not like the whole forum is against you or even like you are being excluded from threads. Just be patient and deal with the larger picture sizes.

there is usualy about 100 to 200ms difference between my broadband connection and my sisters 56k connection, having played for years on a 33.6k connection I can tell you that there is a vast difference, you just learn to live with it and play the best you can.

I live in an area where you can get Broadband on one side of town but not in the other, joyyyy. (Hopefully change in the near future)
I personally don't mind waiting around really for pictures to load and stuff, I've just gotten used to it. It seem really weird when I go on a computer with Broadband ; it's all too fast for me! :D Making piccies as small a filesize as you can without the quality buggering up is always nice though. :)

Because in your post you make the point that how was the person supposed to know that beef magic couldn't get broadband even though in the first post beef magic states that he lives in a village where broadband is unavailable so therefore quoting you was relevant.
I'm currently on 56k (student so can't afford broadband) but I have 600k at home and i love it but I find that 56k is quite sufficient. If you come to a page where there are many images then go and do something else while you wait for it to finish loading. There are always cups of tea to be made and siblings to be beaten up :) .

I have a 64k connection, and its not much better. But I really don't mind waiting for pictures to load. But I can see where Beef Magic is coming from. It doesn't take that much effort to cut the file size down and when the filesizes are low it does load a lot quicker.
I don't mind keeping my file sizes low. I'll watch that from now on...
