I like spurs way more since...
Yeah...untill that sentence ends with "they got relegated" i'm going to have to disagree with you :P Spurs are everything wrong with English football embodied in one club....bad football mixed with bad fans and the biggest delusion of grandure since...well....Newcastle :D But at least the Toon have an amazing set of fans and some legends that make them a likeable club...a likeable manager doesn't make up for it in my opinion.
Saying that they won me a few bob earlier. I find that betting on their mediocracy (the game to end in under 2 goals) is finacially sound :D

oh yeah also
i won my first coupon today.
wycombe let me down for a BIG win(like, no student loans for me type)
but i put a mini selection on and won 2.41 haha :)
West ham i also like more since zola took charge, but if they take more points off us I won't like them. and Stoke well done to them for staying up when we thought they'd be the ones to definately go down.
also major major major lols at Linekar, he just made a funny

Eto'o to Liverpool wouldn't work. Liverpool play with Torres up front and Gerrard as the support striker. All three wouldn't play together and I can't see Benitez messing with the system since they're having their best season (in the league) for around 20 years.
Also, Harry Redknapp is a massive cunt. I have no idea where anyone gets the idea that he's a likeable guy. The constant public tapping up of players, the way he fucked over Portsmouth, and then Southampton, and then Portsmouth again, the bungs. The only reason he looks less bad is because his son is worse.

Also, Carlos Tevez is the most overrated player in the premier league.
I don't post very often so I'm spouting my opinions off whenever they occur to me.
Bendtner > Tevez

A mediocracy would be a form of government run by the media ¬_¬
[/grammar police]
A right winger is what we need, and Lennon is a good right winger. We don't need Tevez though.
Liverpool's problems are an abundance of cracking central midfielders. We have Masch, Gerrard and Xabi and we want to (rightly) play all of them, which raises issues as someone else has to be dropped to make way.
And Lucas is better than people give him credit for. He's played 3 times for Brazil for Christ's sake, he can't exactly be shit.
jonffm

Bendtner > Tevez
Yeah, probably the biggest shite you've uttered this season, and that's saying something considering you actually predicted Arsenal would win the league.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Tevez is exceptional, I think he's good and would give us a different dimension....but there is no striker in the Premiership that is worse than Bendtner, and i'm including Emile Heskey in that. Bendtner's only purpose on a football pitch is to be the living embodiment of how far Arsenal have actually slipped down the pecking order.
Wenger will no doubt prove me right by offloading him ASAP along with Emmanuel "Shit, we could have gotten £30mill for him a year ago" Adebayor....I mean, that must be gutting watching him every week and thinking that could have been David Silva :\
Flava Dave
04-05-2009, 01:05 PM
We were never going to get Silva. And if we did are you implying he'd be playing up front instead of Adebayor?
The Bendtner thing was a joke you insufferable mong. Although Bendtner's 8 league goals are much worse than Tevez's 3. And how exactly would Tevez give you a different dimension? You already have Kuyt to do the hardworking-striker-on-the-wing bit, and he's been great this season.
jonffm
04-05-2009, 01:26 PM
I actually meant David Villa, my appologies :p Who Wenger DOES want and would have been able to afford if he knew when to cash his chips in. I mean, I wonder how much you'd actually get for him now? Especially since, barring a Liverpool-esque miracle and Arsenal winning to Champions League, it'll be another trophyless season and these players are going to start getting itchy feet.....frankly, I think Arsenals biggest targets in the summer if you DON'T win anything will keeping your own players and manager, who will no doubt have another set of tempting offers.
Tevez simply hasn't been utilised by United this season. He's been involved in alot of goals, and to be fair to him, NO United player has been setting the goalscoring charts alight this year. In all competitions, Tevez and Bendtner are seperated by one goal...and Tevez does a damn lot more than Bendtner does in any kind of build-up play.
As I said, everything i've said about him and Abe will be proved right in the summer when they're offloaded, so we'll just wait and see shall we? Or maybe he'll loan him back to Birmingham - more his kinda level to be honest.
Flava Dave
04-05-2009, 01:32 PM
Ronaldo's the top scorer. Tevez just runs around looking busy, he won't be at Man U next season because he's not worth the thirty-odd million it would cost to buy him.
Who's Abe? Adebayor may leave in the summer but Wenger'll keep Bendtner. Also, Birmingham are back in the premier league so he'd be at the same level.
And we'd never get Villa. Arsenal never had the 30-40 million necessary to buy him or the money to pay the wages for him. Also, he's said several times that he doesn't want to leave Spain. You need to stop believing the tabloid transfer news.
jonffm
04-05-2009, 01:39 PM
Ronaldos gone next season, and by his standards, we all know he's had an average season. Nobody in the Premiership has been banging in goals this season, I was sitting around in the pub discussing this last week, how there has been no stand-out striker this season at all. Midfielders are the faves to be the two top goalscorers for fucks sake.
And...are you saying Birmingham and Arsenal are on the same level? ;) I am aware Birmingham got promoted, that was my point, and I can actually see it happening..it's Wengers style to loan them out for a season, keep them for a season, and so forth. Not entirely sure how playing up front for a relegation battler is the same as playing for a CL team, though.
And Villa...you would have had the money if you sold Ade. That was the obvious transfer chain that would have occured, and if not him, then some other big star. Players say "I want to stay forever" all the time, I think it's you that needs to take such statements with a pinch of salt...pretty sure Ashley Cole said that....Wayne Rooney said that...I actually remember Torres said he wanted to stay in Spain too. It's a bargaining method, nothing more.
I do agree you'd find it difficult to lure him NOW, though, but last season you were off the back of a relativly good season where you were title challengers.

Season might not be all bad for Newcastle...
Even if they're in the Chajmpionship next season, at least they probably won't ever have to see Joey Barton again. Shearer is spot on about him, and you could see how furious he was. Get rid of him, he's not worth the hassle...he's not even that good, average midfielder really. Probably got the worst attitude of any Premiership footballer....with a superiority complex to go with it.
Also, Shearer was a good sport, had a nice laugh at the chants of "You should have stayed on the telly".

Blinding, couldn't be much happier with that.
Fletchers sending off was very harsh, it's a shame that he won't be able to play the final as he has shown relatively good talent this season, but fortunately not a great loss.
Barca to win tomorrow and I have to say Barca for the cup, as much as I'd like to deny it. But United showed talent tonight, and I definitely don't think its beyond them. They showed solid defence, aggressive offence and a calculated, co-ordinated midfield. Could well be about the mental edge in 4 weeks time, so I can hope whoever wins tomorrow pushes the other to the end.

I thought Barca were piss poor tonight; they got stuck on the ball at every opportunity. It's all well and good making lots of pretty little runs off it, but no one really drove at Chelsea with the ball still at their feet. Felt like Henry would have made that bit of difference in that respect, if he'd been fit. Not that it mattered in the end.
As a neutral, though, this is definitely the result I wanted to see, regardless of refereeing issues. Drogba really ought to be fuming at himself: he missed the best chance of the game.

barca were pretty poor. however chelsea are a bunch of diving.... in all fairness they did have 2 good shouts for a penalty, but that sending off never was and there were several other instances where they went down far too easily. though it was interesting watching and i'm glad it's not the same final as last year. barca and man u are arguably the two best sides in the world atm

Good ridance, I say. Also...something that seems to have been lost is that REALLY...even though the ref wasshocking, Chelsea caused their own downfall. They knew the risks of defending a 1-0 lead, but they just put men behind the ball...and that Essien 'clearance'? Sorry, but you make a mistake THAT bad at this level, and you get punished.
EDIT: Wow, things are getting worse for Chelsea....have you seen the abomination they're calling their home kit for next season? Massive lolz.

Btw, with last night, Terry also infuriated me. After the game, preaching about how it's perfectly alright to talk to the ref like that if you reckon he's had a bad game. What a disgrace.
If action, and I mean PROPER action (not a measly fine), isn't taken against them, then the FA are making a mockery of their own Respect campaign.

I only saw about 10 minutes of that game on Yankee TV. I saw three things...
1: Abidal sent-off because Anelka fell over his own feet.
2: Chelsea have A LOT of the ball but not score.
3: Ballack trying to wrestle the ref to the ground after this shot hit Eto'o on the shoulder.
Is that about right?

So Fergie will happily pay £30m and £100,000 on Berbatov, but not £25.5m on one the focal points of our attack.
Great...
Porphyrogenitos
20-06-2009, 11:18 AM
Well, the article says they were willing to pay but Tevez decided against it. We should never have let it go on this long though, it's a pisstake. Unless we sign some damned good replacements and get them integrated very fast, I'll be sceptical about the league next year.
AngryPaul
20-06-2009, 01:41 PM
Thats the thing. He was always willing to sign, but instead we bought Berbatov and draged him along for another season.
I think he's in the right to be a bit peeved, but also with Kia Picanto behind him, he was always going to be following the money, hence City and Chelsea seem to be the front-runners.
Glad Kia said he wouldn't go to Liverpool, but I'll never trust a word that man says.
jonffm
20-06-2009, 03:09 PM
I think the whole Berbatov thing - which make no mistake, has caused this situation, ranks way up there in Fergies greatest mistakes as United manager.
The second big blow is that, unlike Ron, he doesn't get a wad of cash to soften the blow. I don't think £80mill is worth it for losing your two best players. It's like Liverpool losing Gerrard and Torres.
Now Fergie should be getting rid of a few players that actually SHOULD go, like Anderson and Nani, and sign at LEAST two world class players and jst hope they can adapt to the Premiership bloody fast. Dunno how much milage you're going to get out of Giggs and Scholes this season, great players but they're really starting to get on abit...
I reckon he will sign from within ther Prem. Lost a fair whack of the spine of his team this summer, so I don't think he can afford to gamble on players that might take a while to settle into the Prem. Valencia is a certainty, but I don't know who he will go after to replace the lost depth up front.
AngryPaul

There was rumours of David Silva around.
I'd quite like Ashley Young's name ot pop up a bit more.
jonffm
20-06-2009, 07:13 PM
Young would be a good signing.
The one thing with Tevez though - I really don't think money was a main reason. I think Tevez is the kind of player that needs to feel wanted, that needs that loyalty, and it never really came from SAF. When Masch came to Liverpool, we couldn't wait to make the deal to get him on the books, we recognised his talent and knew he was worth the cash. Imagine how Tevez felt seeing Liverpool, a team with less money than United, putting their money where their mouth is...while he was enjoying FANTASTIC performances on the pitch and getting nothing out of it.
I agree with SAF on selling Ron, but I really think United made a massive hash of the entire affair and have now nutured a brilliant Premiership talent for one of their rivals to snap up. Yes, his agent is a shit, but this could have been sorted out a long time ago if United wanted to. Now they're stuck with a far lesser striker in Berbatov.
Not to mention the fans, who treated him like a legend, must now feel extreamly let down by the management.
Mr stabby
20-06-2009, 09:36 PM
I think its amusing how he won't go to Liverpool cos we're rivals.

jonffm
23-06-2009, 05:35 PM
Especialliy with Hart as their stand-in.
City are clearly resigned to building a squad full of average players.
Mr stabby
23-06-2009, 05:40 PM
Its cos Hart wants first team football, they can ship him out and Taylor is good enough to be a backup and willing to be one.
AngryPaul
24-06-2009, 09:06 AM
Taylor has always been a number two and is quite comfortable with it. Hart wants first-team football and rightly so, he was a revelation in goal for them and was on the verge of being an England player (regularly).
He deserves to move on and get some games, which he was never going to get with Given there.
Taylor will always be happy to be the backup guy, same as Harper was at Newcastle behind Given.
Both transfers are good moves for all involved I think.
now Mark Hughes just needs a way to play 18 strikers all at once and they'll be on their way...

Ibrahimovic = £40m + Eto'o + Hleb for a year
Surely that makes the deal at least £65m? I think that good ol' Zlatan is alright, but he's not worth that. His temperament lets him down really. He seems moody and uninterested most of the time, even if he's winning and scoring a hat-trick. He's capable of some magic moments, but hes not consistent enough.
I'm also surprised in Barca's insistence that Eto'o leave. He was quite happy, they won the treble and he was their top scorer, yet they still wanted rid of him. He is a consistent striker, 20 goals a season. Baffles me really.
I think Inter get the better deal, with the money and Hleb, although I'm not sure that Serie A will be a successful hunting ground for Eto'o.

Does anyone think that United losing Van der Sar for 8 weeks will be a crucial to this season?
Foster hasn't been great in pre-season, looking rather hopeless when goals have been conceeded against pretty weak opposition. I'm hoping he can pull it out of the hat and fulfill his potential as a future United number one.
jonffm
05-08-2009, 02:01 PM
I agree. I already said in the close season that United need a new keeper, because the backup simply isn't there...that'd be alright if Van Der Sar was abit younger, but he's getting on now...little niggles start creeping into your game.
Not to mention that I think United could do better than VDS ANYWAY. They should have snapped up Given - probably Citys best signing.
Also..
Alonso - thanks for the memories. :) Class player, but we can't turn down that kind of offer. I'm happy we got caught in Reals firing line of silly spending. Now we can go out and snap up a replacement, as well as some cash to POSSIBLY get us another striker. I reckon we still had a good 5-10mill to spend before this, now that should rise to 35-40. That Roma bloke should cost about £20 mill, leaving enough to buy a class striker?
Loved Alonso, but tbh, i'd started to favor Masch over him. So as long as we keep him..we can play with him in DM, replacement in the middle, gerrard pushing forward with Kuyt on the right, and Babel/Riera on the left.
Ooorr play Gerrard in the middle and use the lionshare to buy a world class striker to partner Torres. Either or.

Babel was disappointing yes, but Lucas did an OK job, and Voronin actually had a go at worrying the defense, and also he had a cracking record at Hertha so he can't be that bad.

Apart from one or two games in the first season (Tolouse and Sunderland spring to mind) Voronin did a very poor job in the first season. All he does is run into defenders and try to bounce them off him with his big belly.

Lol. Burnley.
Also, Shola does it again. If Newcastle still had Chopra we'd dominate this league.

Oh dear United...oh dear. I thought Liverpool were worrying with our lack of creativity, but that seemed to have just been a blip in the first game...United just looked poor. Sorely missing Ronaldo.
As for 'Pool, we still need this new bloke in ASAP, so I hope he recovers. Just need that extra something.
But...
How fucking good has Glen Johnson been? Been extreamly impressed by him in these first two games...and he's clearly an extra goalscoring outlet we didn't have before. If he can play like this consistantly, we'll cause any team to have nightmares. Quick, skillfull, has a shot on him, and his crossing is impecable.
Might end up being on a par with the Alonso and Torres transfers.
MOTD EDIT: What a strike from Blake :D

Well, Foster's looking good...
I've not seen the highlights, but the reports and audio clips on the radio seem to be full of praise for Burnley and the atmosphere at Turf Moor. Seems like they played well and the fans played their part.
I'd like to say "its only one game, 36 more to go" but this was something I was worried about all summer. United are weaker upfront and that was where all United's threat came from (defensive record wasn't all that good after the record run - Chelsea were more consistent), so the loss of two world-class players and no replacements was always going to be detrimental to the results this season.
With Ronaldo and Tevez, United were able to switch from Plan A's 4-3-3 to Plan B's 4-4-2 and so forth, but without them 4-4-2 is really the only option.
As McNumpty saqys on BBC Football's website: "Some experts believe Ronaldo's greatest strength was his ability to punish the lesser teams as they tired - and with all respect to Burnley they would fall into that category - but the tension here came from counting down the clock as opposed to any serious supremacy from United."
Fergie is a fool if he thinks this is a complete squad. I'll be happy for him to prove me wrong, but for now it looks like United need a 'big' signing.

Didn't Glazier promise to give Fergie that £80 million to spend? What a surprise he was lying.

United won't win the league like this, they NEED another signing. That said, perhaps Liverpool may do, too.
Side note - won £50 on a accumilator tonight, woot!

man u do not need ronaldo to beat burnley. they do need owen to stop missing sitters though (hahahahaha). drawing any sort of meaningful conclusion from the results of the first couple of games is impossible - which everyone clearly realises because i dont see anything about arsenal's prospects here...

I agree it'd be foolish to write United off, but...really, they won so many games last year by brining on a late striker sub, because they had someone as good as Tevez on the bench....or Ronaldo would relentlessly wear them down and/or score an insane free kick.
They don't have those options anymore. Without them, United wouldn't have won the league last year.
I'm worried as a Liverpool fan, but I think United fans should be equally as worried. They were far from convincing against Birmingham, and Burley simply deserved to win...and those are the two weakest teams in the Premiership.

I'd just like to express my sympathies to the Davenport family. Hopefully Calum and his mother will make a recovery. It'd be tragic to see a player's career ended in such a way especially with another 10 years or so ahead of him.

I see UEFA are being cunts as usuall.
Finally they decide to start cracking down and...oh, surprise surprise, it's an English club that get's singled out for a witch-hunt.
Oh well. Let's all just be happy thinking about their faces when the CL group stage was drawn giving all four english teams a reletivly straight-forward passage to the next round. They must have been mortified :)

Does anyone else see Liverpool's complaining of 'he hit it twice' for the West Ham penalty as an actual legitimate claim?

I know the rules state you can't hit a penalty twice, but surely his foot being in the way counts as a deflection?

It would have been overly harsh if it had been given. Liverpool can't talk shit about penalty controversy anyway, I still remember THAT Gerrard dive against some Spanish club in the CL last year.

Great results for Spurs and Everton last night, quite comprehensive against opposition who could cause you a scare on a cup night. Chelsea once again did what they always do in domestic cup competitions - squeak through an easy home tie.

So Liverpool have already lost more games then they did in the whole of last season?
Mind you, United just drew at home to Sunderland. Thats what Fergie gets for sticking with Foster, and playing a 'weakened' team (e.g. Welbeck, not starting Anderson or Carrick, playing Nani instead of the in-form Giggs). Dissapointed he started bitching abut the amount of time added on AGAIN. You've just stopped getting yelled at for the Manchester derby, don't bring it up again.
Oh, and lol, he thought the ref was unfit (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/8289089.stm).

As good as a manager Sir Alex is he should learn to be gracious in defeat. Also, typical he replaces Giggs with Nani just as I do the opposite in fantasy football.

Those rare incidents like that one with the beach ball are the main reasons to watch football. Always funny to see another team get completely screwed over. It's even worth Sunderland picking up a win because of it.
Apparently though, the laws of the game say that the goal should have been disallowed.

Well not a good day for Newcastle today. Ashley has decided to keep hold of the club, Chris Hughton has been named as permanent manager for 2 years and Kishanishvili's appeal against a three match ban has been turned down.
How is this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/8316456.stm)deserving of a three match ban? (Approx 55 seconds)
Finally it seems as though the fat man is going to look for a sponsor for the stadium. I'll be dammed if I'll refer to it as Coca Cola Park or the Sports Direct Stadium. Don't think that'll be a popular move even if it's an easy way to raise a bit of cash.

He really just needs to stick with it. It can't be good for the value of the club to be on-off-on-off the market all the time and its really detrimental to the team.
I wouldn't be surprised if you were up for sale again by the end of December, going into the Jan transfer window....

Nah, he'll wait until the end of the transfer window so he has time to sell of the remaining good players. Then he'll sell the club once he's sold off all the assets.
