A man sits in a closed train compartment. He suddenly sees a 3 fingered hand through the compartment window, reaches for a gun and shoots the person.
He kills the person but does not get prosecuted.

No; 'The who?' in PB's answers gives it away. He only said it when the question implied that the 3-fingered person was male. The fact that he used 'person' tells us 2 things, neither of which is gender.
Nuclear Spoon
24-08-2004, 04:37 PM
And the two things are:
1) They might be male
2) They might be female
Dick Champion
24-08-2004, 04:41 PM
Nope. That counts as one thing. The other is that this is a human (Which makes Dingbat's question - almost - redundant).
Edit: In fact, I'd like to withdraw my last question in favour of another, if that's okay.
Did the gun that the man used to shoot the 3-fingered woman belong to the other person in the closed compartment?

How do you know it's not Mulefa from Philip Pullman's Dark Materials Books? They were defined as people? But then they didn't have hands.
But then he would have written 'person' in mulefa language, and they did have hands; 1-fingered hands that attach to the pod thingies that they roll on. Also, don't be silly.

Ok, I'm going to step out on a limb here, everyone feel free to derive questions from my thoughts if this is partially wrong.
Did the man see his own reflection, noting that his hand had only three fingers, and feeling very depressed about his situation, decide that, even though he had promised his grandmother that he would make the journey to her that day on the 3pm train, to take his own life for fear that he would never be able to play the piano again?

was the man earlier convicted of murdering the woman, and was therefore not charged again??
Dick Champion
26-08-2004, 07:39 PM
Double Jeopardy. Bit silly, but that's probably the answer.
If so, then the other person in the compartment is a warden with a gun who was taking him to prison for murdering the woman (his wife?).
At a guess, I'd say that the woman cut off two of her fingers in order to leave 'evidence' for the police to find. He was framed for a murder that never happened, and having been convicted already he could not be prosecuted a second time.
Why she is on the train I don't know, but seeing the three-fingered hand, he put two and two together, realised it was his wife and pulled the guard's gun out to shoot her.
The initial conviction would be overturned, and despite having actually murdered his wife, he would walk free.
This wouldn't happen in Britain, as the 'Double Jeopardy' law exists only in America. Even so, I'm not sure the law works like this. He would have to be on his way out of serving the prison sentence for him to be let free, and that eventuality raises the question of why in a compartment being guarded by a warden with a gun in the first place. Unless it was a random civilian with a gun, but it seems unlikely that he would have the presence of mind know that the other man had a gun at all. It has to be a guard/ policeman for him to act as quickly as he does.
And why would he be going to prison on a train anyway?
It's a nice mystery, but a little unrealistic.
This is all assuming I'm correct, of course. ;)

So there is this guy found in the middle of a field wearing nothing, and all he has is half of a straw. (If you know this one, let other people guess)
I know loads of Mystries, but most r short, ill tell a few for no reason.
A man is found dead hanging in a barn or a crossbeam there is a pool of water underneath him but there is now way he could have reached up to hang himself with out some kind of support, So how did he hang himself?
HappyJack

He stood on a large ice cube, put the noose around his neck and waited for the cube to melt.
However, hangings kill people by snapping the neck, so he would have been alive for quite some time.

Zirconium tungstate
Quote from HERE (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/11/041119015323.htm)
Most solids expand when heated, a familiar phenomenon with many practical implications. Among the rare exceptions to this rule, the compound zirconium tungstate stands out by virtue of the enormous temperature range over which it exhibits so-called "negative thermal expansion," contracting as it heats up and expanding as it cools, and because it does so uniformly in all directions.
OOoo and silk, polyester, cotton, stars(ok so they shink as they use up the nuclear energy and heat up) and meat.

yes like i sed, the thing that contracts doesnt actually exist so you are wrong, but it is intreaging that u were bothered to go to such lengths to find that out (either that or you have accumulated lots of random, almost useless information like me, i.e. the time it takes to pour the perfect pint of guiness is 109.5 seconds and the boiling point of maple syrup is 104 degrees celcius) so well done the same, but keep looking.
oh yeah and silk, polyester (which is a type of plastic) cotton and meat are also chemical reactions when that happens so it is the same as toast like i sed before, and stars..thats completly differant.

spot on, thats the answer, a hole.
and although the hole doesn't actually shrink the material around the hole (ie what it is in, eg iron) expands making the hole smaller and therefore it appears to have shrunk.

Can I have a quick go? I love this one:
In Los Angeles there was a bus and for no reason it was incredibly full, to the point where only one person could physically get on. It reached a bus stop and two people tried to get on, the first one got on succesfully but when the second guy tried to get on he was told to get off by the conductor. An argument ensued and it ended up with the bus starting to move off. At this point the guy who was trying to get on the bus jumped on the back and was promptly pushed off by the conductor. The man went under the wheels of the car behind. The conductor was arrested and charged with murder. In court, the jury found him guilty as charged and the judge sentenced him to death. He was later strapped into the electric chair but when the executioner pulled the switch that would ensure his death, the chair failed to work. They tried again but it wouldn't work. Later they tried with a different chair and even that didn't work. They moved him around America, trying to execute him on electric chairs in 3 different states, needless to say, they didn't work. Eventually he was pardoned.
Why wouldn't he die?

Highest by elevation or from base to tip?
Now if you meant by elevation then yes it would be everest, Due to it being the highest elevation on land.
if you meant from base to tip then, Mauna Kea, a neighbor of Mauna Loa on the same island of Hawaii, is actually the tallest mountain in the world. Mauna Kea is about 350 ft/107m taller than Mauna Loa but has less mass.
If you want to get really technical, How ever the biggest mountain is Mauna Loa from its true base on the bottom of the ocean, in the Hawaiian Trough, the total height exceeds that of Everest by over 3/4 of a mile and has a huge mass.
In any event it would still be which ever mount it was as it was still there before it was discovered

Elementary, my dear forumites!
In this thread we will solve a difficult case. A babyhas been found dead, under curious cicumstances... It is up to you to find out exactly what happened.
You can ask me all kinds of questions, which i will answer with Yes, No, In A Way or Irrelevant.
Questions can be a lot of things: Is it raining? Is he married? Is he Canadian? Does he like flamingos?
Ask smart, and find out what happened.
If you think you´ve solved the case, instead of posting a question, post the entire story from start to finish about the cause of the death.
If you played this game before and recognize the story, please refrain from playing. You might spoil the fun for the rest. I will probably be able to tell if someone is trying to rig it.
Please, ask only one question per post, and don´t post too often, give others a chance as well...
You may post more questions after eahcother, you do not need to wait for me to reply.
