View Full Version : The Unwritten Rules written down

I asked you a while ago, to state some of our unwritten rules (click (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11326&) and click (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10299&) ). Here they are, with explanations.

If you are new here, and you want to learn about how our little community works and how to fit in, read this.

If you got flamed or given a minus, but you don't understand why, the answer is probably in this post.

Remember, all these 'rules' are mere guidelines, that evolved here to keep things running smoothly. There are circumstances that these rules may be broking for comedy effect :)

read the FAQs (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=13); know the written rules. Also, read the technical forum FAQ (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/misc.php?s=&action=faq) for all technical issues.
stay on-topic in the threads
post relevant threads in the designated subforums
if you see a bad thread, do not post in it. Give it a 1 rating and a -
don't double post
don't cross-post (posting of identical text at different places in the forums)
don't use text speak
don't use 1337 speak
don't ask for a thread to be locked, cheesed or crapped.
do not bump a thread, once it's off the 2nd page
Don't feed the trolls!
use the search button to see if the thread you are about to start hasn't been done lately
think before you start a thread: do the hundreds and hundreds of other users really want to read this?
don't complain about moderators and admins
don't post one word replies
if you're not interested in a thread, don't read it
don't use smilies too much
never ever flame in beginners
do not flame new users when they break these unwritten rules. Kindly link them to this thread, so they can learn.
post counts/reputation points are not the be all or end all of forum existance
never ever beg for rupies. you have to earn them.
be openminded about what you read here, and be careful with what you post here
when debating a serious topic, make sure you read the entire thread before commenting
be considerate when things concern sex and violence
there are private messages, please use them.
don't complain about the rules.
do not post your introductory thread in an area full of experienced posters
if someone really bothers you, use the ignore option in 'User CP'. it helps
hit the preview button before you post
if you're banned, contact an admin first before rejoining
do not spam in the cheese and crap basket
be careful with what files you attach. don't attach random stuff.
use JPG, GIF or PNG formats when you post images

PS I'm not the authority on rules. All suggestions are welcome. I am just writing my thesis on internetcommunities, and was compiling this list anyway. Might as well post it, no?

Of course, these rules aren't always that strict. Sometimes they don't even apply at all.
Some are maybe a bit strange at first sight... so here you go:

A little explanation about some of the rules:
[list=1]
The rules in this post are unwritten. They are not strict and most of them weren't even invented. They evolved because a group of people spent a lot of time together. However, there are a number of real rules as well. You'll find that this community expects you to have read and understand these rules. We also expect you to check the FAQs first when you have a general question about the forums.
There are thousands of members here, and thousands of different topics. To keep things tidy for us as for yourself, stick to the topic that was initiated by the starter. If you want to talk about another topic, search for a thread that tackles the subject, or create one yourself.
Because we have so many different topics, there are a number of subforums. That's very handy, because if you're primarily interested in discussing Gaming, you don't have to wade through swamps of Music-topics. Browse around a bit in all sections, so you get the feel of what's what.
Bad threads occur, on a daily basis. Smartest thing to do is ignore it. If no-one replies, it quickly falls down, and drops off the first page. Also you can give it a 1 rating, showing others beforhand that it's a crappy thread. You can also minus the thread starter, thus signalling he or she should shape up his postings.
We like it that way, because it keeps the forums tidy and the database healthy. If you want to add or change something to your post, use the edit button instead of posting again. Also, if no-one has replied to your last post in a thread, don't reply yourself to bump it. People probably had a reason. There are of course moments where double posting isn't that bad or even necessary.
Don't post the same post or thread in different sections of the forums. If we're really interested, we'll find the thread and reply to it.
This is not a chatroom, nor a mobile phone, let alone your MSN/ICQ/AOL/BBQ. Use proper english with good grammar and spelling. You have enough time here to take the trouble to type and we've got enough time to read it. Also, there are many nationalities and different ages here. It helps all of us understanding you, when you type correctly. You could always visit #weebl at quakenet...
Again this is not a chatroom, let alone a CS-game. We appreciate it when you take the trouble to speak correct english, as there are many nationalities and different ages here. It helps all of us understanding you, when you type correctly. You could always visit #weebl at quakenet...
It's purely for the mods to decide if a thread should be locked, cheesed or crapped. If no action is taken, the mods probably think it's alright, or they haven't noticed it yet. Either way, sit still. If you don't like the thread, don't post in it.
It's not a good idea to resurrect a thread, when you have little more too add than: "Yes, I agree" or "Indeed, that's quite funny". The common idea would be, if a thread is no longer on the first page, you can consider it dead and stop posting in it. Of course many good threads would be lost if we were to uphold this rule too tightly, so you may by all means bump a thread if you have a valid and new addition to make, because that would be better than making a new thread about the same topic.
Every forum has to deal with trolls, people who are just out to annoy others. Often, they are banned pretty quickly. Till then, do not feed them! ie do not fall for their cheap tricks. They'll probably try to anger you or offend you. Replying to them only makes them enjoy their childish game.
It's not very handy for any of us if we have multiple active threads on the same subject. Much more fun to have a joint discussion. Use the search button and use it smart, try different search queries and different spellings when you look for things. If you find nothing, but expect there must have been a thread, start your thread by saying that you did search but did not find. It reassures you that you did take the trouble of looking. If you did find a thread, try to assess whether it's too old to be ressurrected, or you can post there safely.
Threads are not (only) for your personal amusement. If your thread is only interesting for you and some of your (online) friends, please don't post it. We're a big group, and though most threads won't appeal to everyone, we try to make threads relevant to more than a select group.

14. The mods and admins here are generally nice people (except Evil Ida). They donate many hours of their own spare time to these forums, without receiving any payment. They're goal is to keep this place fun, not bugging you. They're very experienced and shouldn't have to answer to other members. Especially, don't open special threads to moan or complain about mod decisions. If you feel your treated unfairly, send them a personal message politely asking why a decision was made.
15. If you're not bothered to type a bit more, don't bother at all. We're not interested in reading a mere "Yes!" or a "Ok...".
Of course, this is one of the rules that's get broken a lot, even by moderators. There are many situations in which it's ok, mostly for comedy reasons. Try to refrain from them in general though.
16. Pretty simple rule, it seems, but pretty hard to put to practice. If it's a crap thread, you may downrate it, but if it's a thread you're just not interested in, don't even read it, and certainly don't post in it. Keeps things smooth for everyone. Remember that a forum of this size can never accomodate everyone in every thread.
17. Smilies are great for giving an extra meaning to your words. Often they're necessary to explain your meaning, so you won't offend anyone unnecessarily. But don't use them too often. Don't make posts with just smilies.
18. Important rule. The beginners sections is where new users can get the hang of things. It's there where they may play silly games or start a thread that would bore all experienced users, like "What's your favourite pie?". In order to safely do so, the moderators decided it's a flame-free section. If you disagree with anything that goes in there, just don't read it. It probably means you're experienced enough to stick to the other forums.
19. Flaming often does more harm than good.
20. Many new users think you need to have posted many posts, or have a large green reputation, to be respected around these parts. Wrong. We'll like anyone who writes funny, witty and insightful posts. Of course, it does help if we've had a chance to get to know you a bit.
21. Of course, if you have reputation, it's not longer that important to you. But here it is: you earn rep points by making good posts and getting a + now and then from other users. We are irritated when people beg for reputation. Might even get you banned. (thanks Smiley Clown)
22. This basicly means the following: In written form, things may not come out the way you intend them. Happens all the time. Keep an open mind when you read something posted by another user. They may not have intended it that way. Same thing goes for posting yourself. Don't just blurp out the first thing in your mind, consider it might be picked up the wrong way. Of course, this is a very mild rule, and should not inhibit you from speaking your mind. It's just something to consider.
23. This goes in the entire forum, but especially in the debates section. It's very annoying to other readers when you add a reply that contains something that has already been said repeatedly. It's even worse if it's an argument that has already been debunked or proven wrong.
24. This is a very mixed forum. We've got all walks of life here, and all ages. This means: no excessive violence, no gore pics, no porn. Most swearwords are ok, however, and mild nudity is allowed in threads with a warning in the topic. Just remember that kids and people in offices don't need to be shown offensive material unexpected.
25. If you have something personal to say to someone, use the PM system. Don't place personal remarks on the forums for everyone to read. If it doesn't concern us, we're probably not interested either.
26. The real rules (the ones in the FAQs (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=13)) are not to be questioned. Ever. They are there for a reason. The unwritten rules should not be questioned either. They evolved together with this community (which is very close for some). When you're a new user, you'll have to adapt to these unwritten rules in order to be a true part of the community. It's the same as any real life group, really. You may of course always question my representation and interpretation of these rules ;)
27. We like it if you say hello and tell us a bit about yourself. Best place to do that is the Beginners (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=2) section.
28. Sometimes you really can't get along with someone. In order to stop getting agitated, and keep the flamewars to a minimum, you could choose to put that user on your ignore list (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/member2.php?s=&action=viewlist&userlist=ignore).
29. Very handy. Proofread your text, check to see if your images work. Prevents you from making silly mistakes. If a mistake would happen to slip through once you posted, use the edit button to correct it.
30. When you're banned, it is for a good reason. You probably screwed up bigtime. Banned people are overall not welcome anymore, so don't bother to rejoin. Often the mods will notice very soon and just ban you again. However, we're not a moody bunch. If you're sorry and learned from your mistakes, you may contact an admin privately, apologize and ask to be let back in. Most of the time, this will work. You'd be suprised to know who of our more respected members were once banned :)
31. What a strange rule, i hear you say. Aren't Cheese and Crap meant for spam? Well, it's where spam gets moved to, it's not a place for you to spam unpunished. Personally, I still hand out minusses to stupid posts there.
32. Don't randomly attach pictures when they're not needed, it's irritating. Also, if you have your own webspace, use that to host your pics; the attachment option is a nice service but it does cost bandwidth. Do not attach *.exe or *.zip files. They might be mistrusted, because of virus risks. See Cap'n Zola's attachment below on how to attach. (thanks to Cap'n Zola and Bionic Sheep)
33. JPG, PNG and GIF are much smaller than BMP, the format you get when you save something in MS Paint. GIF is especially recommended for files with 256 colours or less. JPG is better for photos etc. You can use Paint to save as another format. There are also other programs that can do that for you (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro). (thanks to Cap'n Zola)

I'm sure I missed a number of important rules. Please post all your ideas here. Additions and changes will be updated to these three posts.

Attaching Files - Nettiquette

The attach file button is an innocuous little box at the bottom of the page when you post. This function is here so that you can put in pictures or a few other types of file in order to give someone a file or share a picture.

You don't always have to attach a file! Posting an off-topic picture in a thread is bad. Very bad. A bad post may be mildly admonished, but attaching a massive picture that is totally off-topic will inspire the wraith of select pagan gods. Or possibly mods. Certainly one of the two.

Generally, it is not done to attach zip files unless you are fairly well known around the forums. This isn't a granite rule, and you won't be flamed, it's just that if a relatively unknown newbie posts a zip file, most people will avoid it out of fear for catching a virus. If you put in a sizeable description of what is in the file and it appears good, a few people may download it and confirm it for the others. Perhaps.

As Poofbird has already stated, NO sick images, NO porn, NO gore, NO disgustingness - you will either be instantly banned or given a firm warning. Don't. It's neither big nor clever.

But finally, the most important message ever:
Don't piss off the mods.

Thank you.

Cap'n Zola

Fantastically done - I'd just like to attach an image showing how to attach images if that is okay :)

Remember to check that your image isn't saved as a .BMP because they're just annoying. You can change what type of file it is in MSPaint. .JPG or .GIF would be prefered, I'd think.

I made that picture...

Anyway, I am sick of people double posting with the excuse "I can't attach when I edit" for this is not true,
first, copy exactly what you posted and then delete the post, using the delete button at the top, then paste what you have written in a new re-pie with the added attachment, and perhaps a message edit: added attachment

I have a quick extra-rule to add. It addresses something I have noticed an outbreak of recently.

If you do something wrong, and others take notice, it is best to admit fault. Apologize for your wrongdoings, and all will be forgiven. If someone corrects you, and they are correct, the best to do is agree and not to insult them or call them a myriad of bad things, or make a thread where you state how much you hate that person who corrected you.

Also, if you do something wrong, dont give some silly story where "Someone hacked my account" or "my little brother/sister/banana got onto my account" or "Some idiot got my password"
Its obvious when you lie, especially if the "person who was on your username" types in the EXACT same style you do. You wont fool anyone. We arent stupid.:)

Cap'n Zola
26-05-2004, 07:48 PM
I think that's a great point and people should be encouraged to do this, preventing making themselves look like even more of an arse sometimes. I know I should have done this in the past.

AngryPaul

Repsect other peoples opinion, especially in the debates section. Just because you believe that somebodies personal opinion is incorrect does not give you the right to flame them/laugh in their face/chop them into pieces. Just think, they may think the exact same as you for the opinion/beliefs you have.

Like in reality, we need to respect other peoples way of life and personal views, but we don have to agree with them ;)

Thank you

There is a person out there who hates us so very much. He is salty samurai(not worthy of proper english usage), and he likes to spam and make multiple accounts etc

therefore: If you dont like a look of a name, or it looks dodgy, click on it(or the profile button) and read up about the person, and check their previous posts. If things don't look right, and the person doesnt make sense of their posts, PM a moderator and ask them to take a look at that person's profile/computer details, and if it matches someone that the moderators/admins have banned, then that user will be banned.

We have had many people make many stupid accounts here to make themselves look cool. They aren't, so its best to try to ignore them, or PM them and ask them what the deal is, and if things dont work out from there, talk to your local(and very friendly) moderator, they will be happy to help.

If you are unsure about a thread's "spammage factor," it would be nice to ask a moderator. The nicest and most understanding mod here would probably be Destrukto, and that's partially why he's the mod of the beginner's section :p.

I'm sure this has been done before
if you think this search 1st, chances are it has been done but it may have been a long time ago so many won't have been a member then and if they bumped up the thread they would of been flamed.

1: Please always follow the rules
2: Only follow rule 1 is rule 3 and 4 are broken
3: Never abide rule 4
4: Rule 3 must always be followed.
5: Ignor rules 2 and 3 if rule 6 is broken

hardly

this forum has nothing to do with the cartoon...

You're like the guy who meets a girl in a bar, chats her up, but after seeing her on a daily basis for a couple of months, refuse the idea of 'having a relationship'. Your just having a few drinks and a laugh... right?

this forum what a all forums are: people who communicate with eachother.

the forums are not the orange you see in your browser
the forums are not the characters in the script some monkeys have written
the forums are not the bits and bytes you download through your connection

the forums are the people who attend it, and people always have rules, both explicit and implicit.

there is absolutely no-one here who takes your perception of the 'forums' serious at all. we take the people who we meet here on a daily basis seriously (though admittedly not all of them)

You sound like one of the people who still think Internet is about connecting networks so computers can exchange data.
that is like thinking television is about broadcasting from satelites to private receiving units, or thinking newspapers are about confiding newsstories to paper and ink.

technically they are, but foremost they are all about people communicating with other people, and that can never be taken seriously enough.

the worst ever concoction s'posedly drank by yours truely (i say this on the belief of others words, as i was prolly very cut to have agreed to the following...):
2 shots of jd
4 vodka shots
roughly 1 shot of baileys (we didnt' use much of this because it doesn't mix well, but we had to put it in...it just tases so nice :D)
1 bottle of watermellon bacardi breezer
and the space that remained unfilled in my pint glass was filled with sprite.
now that was a pungent drink to down. *sticks thumb up in o.k gesture*

Wait, I have another.
It isn't exactly a rule, just more of a guidline.
References to "Pie" and repeatedly posting the weebl/badger emoticons do not make you look cool, they make you look moronic, these forums do not revolve around weebl and bob.

Kind reminder

11. Don't feed the trolls!

it's a common rule on whole the interweb!

Trolls are spammer who want to piss you off.
They're not n00bs who make mistakes, but sick little fucks who know what they're doing is offensive.

We have them here on a weekly basis, and we've had a number of them today. replying to their threads gives them the attention they so pathetically crave and encourages them to continue.

What do you do?

1) Ignore them
b) minus them (as if they care)
three) inform a mod or admin when they are persistent.
IV) ignore them some more

and 5) minus others who feed the troll by posting in the spam threads!

"this is a signature virus, copy me into your signature to help me spread"

I will personally destroy you.

Because signature viruses are bad for the forums, mmkay? Waste of space, and spreading viruses is bad. Not to mention it's an extremely annoying fad.

Rule number purple: Don't make parodys of parodys of parodys in the cheesebin, it's old.

Rule number X: Don't use the "I don't know what you're talking about... So here's a bunny with a pancake on it's head" image, let Oolong rest in peace.

[edit]
Actually, don't use the same flame pic too many times, they just become annoying, try to find (or make) new ones every so often.

This seems to me to be more common courtesy, which is to leave your name when you rate someone.

I realise that this was removed so that people can't rate back, but really that's what the 20 other posts first rule does anyway.

I think it's just kinder if you know who liked your posts etc.

They are basically the same thing.

Look Domino, all we ask is that a person writes legibly.

See what I'm doing? I am punctuating, spelling, grammarizing and trying to write well.

This is bad writing:
