View Full Version : The first bastion of -=RAP=- on weebls music.

Hello, any other rap listeners out there? And I mean real rap, not the crap you see played on TV for the most part. If so then it's time to establish some rap threads here at weebls music.
So for starters, why not throw out some group names and tell what types of rap you are listening to, maybe.
(I can only hope that you won't say 50 cent, Chingy, Nelly, virtually any rapper whose name ends with a -y, J-Kwon, and to a lesser extent Ludacris or Eminem)
I'm interested in stuff like
-Wu Tang
-'Ol Dirty Bastard
-Gza
-Raekwon
-Ghostface
-Cypress Hill
-Nas
-Snoop and Dre
-Beastie Boys
-DMX
-Rascalz
-Gang Starr
-Blackalicious
-Maestro
-DJ serious
-DJ format
etc.
Vive la resistance!

BrainTax.
TaskForce.
Cypress Hill.
Biggie Smalls.
Dilated Peoples.
Beastie Boys.
BusDriver.
I listen to all types of rap music even Eminem. The thing I hate most about Rap today is that if you say you like Eminem even the slightest you get slated for it straight away and I'm not saying all his songs/raps are amazing quality but his old stuff and his freestyles, I think, are pretty amazing but thats just my opinion.

That''s just on the MC side of things though. I'm a big fan of instrumental hip-hop too, people liek Sixtoo, Blockhead, DJ Signify (again)...etc.
Btw the list the thread starter put is pretty mainstream, I see most of it on MTV (or would if I watched it). I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying "underground" and similar is a term bandied about a bit too often these days.

I'd say that is a bit of an exagerration, I don't think I've ever seen anything on MuchMusic or MTVCanada (not that I watch it much) from half the artists I listed. Ever seem a Liquid Swords or Ironman video on TV? And surely you don't think that the majority of the ODB's stuff is mainstream; that stuff would never get played even on radio.
But I did only list a few of the more major artists I like in my list, and anyways maybe you can show me some good underground british(?) rap.
A tribe called quest
Busta Rhymes (Back when he was good - the Woo Ha era)
Fugees
Group X (Self-styled rap anyway, but good, funny stuff)
Jay Z (Self-agrandizing, yes, but with the sheer volume of stuff he has put out there have been good tracks - ex: the "Time to Build" colaboration)
Brass Munk
Kardinal Offishall
KRS-One
NWA
Punjabi MC

a little busta rhymes, pharcyde, dj qbert, dilated peoples, k-os, dmx, outkast. not much but im going off rap for the moment... damn you mainstream! (and oh yes, im sorry to admit it but i am guilty of rapping along to ludacris :( )

Fair enough, I didn't mean to say they were all like uber mainsgtream hip pop, but It's not exactly underground - fair play though, most of it's pretty good.
As to good british Rap I recommend buying 2 CDs called Taskforce Presents DJ Louis Slipperz Slippery £10 bag (I and II). It's got a good spread with Jehst, Taskforce, Braintax, Yungun etc. It's pretty good. A bit too much like th Bitch Nigga culture for the east enders, but pretty good nontheless.

I love the fact that the Beastie Boys are all in their mind-forties and still going at it better than everyone else in the mainstream. They might get slated for being Wiggaz, but that's irony for you :D
GuerillaBaaBaa, for putting Sage Francis at the top of your list, I now love you.
GorillaBearBear
25-06-2004, 09:25 PM
Sager Francis clearly owns. Listening to Non-prophets is kind of like listening to Rage against the machine without the guitars and with scratching and drum machines and Joe Beats goodness. I also love some of his lines, such as:
"I'm not right wing, or left wing
I'm the Middle Finger"
"This is My house, you don't like it get the fuck off of my rooftop"
The one that's in my sig. So many more. He's fuckign ace. I think his non-prophets shit is best though. Personal Journals is a bit too disjointed because every song has a different producer. Even so, he's definately my favourite MC at the moment, because he's fast, funny and he's like, one of the only leftfield rappers who rhymes anymore. Him and Alias are basically the only ones who rhyme nowadays.
Space Prawn
25-06-2004, 09:35 PM
He's the difference between rap and poetry. Not in a Streets sort of way, which is a bit more tongue in cheek - but he gets the Left-wing message across without being too heavy handed with it. Rage sometimes went a little over the top, but Sage (especially on Hey Bobby) just cuts through the poop and tells it nice and simple without getting too worked up. It's cool and slick, not angry.
Does anyone know Jehst? My friends have mentioned him a couple of times, but he doesn't seem to have much of an internet presence.
GorillaBearBear
25-06-2004, 09:39 PM
I've heard a bit of Jehst. He's definately the best of the UK mainstream yet underground hip-hop camp. Except maybe Braintax. He's well worth checking out.

Just thought I'd pop by to say I had my first experience of the Pharcyde today. The song was "She keeps on Passing me By". Bloody Ace. It's kind of Beastie Boys meets Cypress Hill meets The Herbaliser meets Mr Scruff. Well worth checking out.

Well I've downloaded (for shame, I know) some Braintax and I think it's alright. I thought it was a little more conventional, sanitized, and narrative than a lot of what I listen to, but it reminded me a bit of Maestro. I'd say it is somewhere between Nas, Maestro, and Kid Koala.

You should check out some Jehst and Taskforce. All quite similar and intense. Yeah it's conventional, but the near-cockney accents make up for it :D

Yeah you should. I'd start with labor Days or Bazooka Tooth. Labor Days is US Import though, so might cost more. He's a fucking good MC, but his accent and voice might annoy some.
As regards to the cock who dislikes rap/hip-hop.
Firstly, you have clearly shown to us fans that you have a complete disregard for the difference between the two.
Secondly, if there is a place dedicated for rap and hip hop music, and you know full well that you dislike it... the fuck off with the reading of it.
Now you know.

Aesop rock is worth listening to...
I have been listening to a lot of french hip-hop recently and its damm good. IAM, fonky family, NTM, Cut killer and MC solaar are good, although MC solaar is apparently considered the eminem of french hip-hop, as he has "sold out". Cut killer is much more mash up oriented, similar to DJ yoda.
I cannot understand what they are going on about, as its in french, but apparently it is along a similar line to DMX/dead prez type stuff...

Thank you. I'm also here for private parties as well. Low Low Prices for Top Quaility service!
But I digress. I had Kerrang! on just now, and the new D12 song was on there... I thought "Hmm, it looks like Eminem is taking too major a role in this band". But there is a bit right at the end which is completely different, and it seems like a very satirical piece of rap music making.
Hurrah for Irony.
