Invites tend to just be granted randomly, but it appears to be more common for active accounts - so if you use it as your main email address they should be forthcoming quite quickly.

Also once you've had invitations once, they appear to be granted more often subsequently.

Just my observations though.

I have two accounts myself but neither of them are specially active so haven't got any invites asigned to them yet.

They must just have some very, very big servers. But if you think about it, how many people are going to get anywhere near 1gb worth of e-mail? I know there isn't much chance of me even hitting around 300mb.

In other words, you can trade invitations and whatnot, but you can't register an email address like mcdonalds@gmail.com, and then try to sell it to McDonald's. Plus, trading for rupies is not a "commercial purpose," which is what is forbidden by the new policy.

In short, yes, you can sell Gmail invitations for rupies.

How the invites work
The person who has the invite fills in a form, with your current email address, and the invite is sent to that email address.

The person at that email address then follows a link and signs up for GMail, using whatever username they want.

In short, don't ask for people to sign you up for <insertname>@gmail.com, you have to give them your current email address so that they can send you the invite.

(btw, I don't have any invites left at the moment)

No, I believe they are getting annoyed at people registering common addresses, and selling them, not trading invites. There was a short discussion about this a page or two back in this thread.

Also, there are like 20 people who have said that they want a Gmail address, so adding your own name to the list isn't really going to help. Why don't we continue the way that the thread started, where you post after someone says that they have extra invites? That way the thread wouldn't be excessively bumped like it is now.

To re-iterate what Stringy Pete said earlier, though: Don't post things like "can you register me xyz@gmail.com", as the system does not work that way. When you are invited you get to choose what you want - so please don't keep bumping just to try and 'reserve' an address.

You need to wait for a day or two then look under your left toolbar.

It depends on your activity, ie how much money google can make off you by using adwords on your emails :p
But basically if you're just using gmail on the side you won't get as many invites as someone using gmail for main email.

Activity plays the biggest part in receiving Gmail invites - I registered very soon after the service became available (by trusty invite), and for a good fortnight I didn't get any invites of my own to dole out. After signing up to a couple of mailing lists, though (might as well test the anti-spam while I'm here :D ), invites began to pour in.

You'll know if you've got some to dish out in one of two ways. Number one: in the menu to the left of the page, there'll be a red text link "Invite [someone/x people] to Gmail". This has moved from its original location at the top of the page, which confused me for a little while. Number two, when composing a message, a red text link at the bottom of the page will say "Invite [person's name] to Gmail".

well i dont have and never have had an isp e-mail address.

gmail is good, adds are unobtrousive (sp?). server is quick, storage is big, threading, labelling and filtering all make it better than hotmail and the others

I've just asked PoofBird for one. I love the exponential nature of this stuff, tho it seems weird that Google didnt just have a normal registration process. It does make it kinda cooler if u have to get an invite tho, and maybe stops idiots getting their hands on one quickly...

EDIT: I believe the stuff about Google data-mining on the emails and stuff, as soon as a guy at work told me about G-Mail and the 1Gb storage (!!!!) limit, I said "Google is going to take over the world!". Which I still kinda believe :p But anyway I dont think I have anything to be embarassed about in my email practices, most people should not have problems with their email being recorded forever, unless they are doing something which they shouldnt be. I'd still obviously prefer to have privacy, but I do kinda trust google, for no reason at all other than my dad introduced it to me 4 years ago, and the guys that created it are obviously geniuses.
