All you classic gaming nuts have probably heard of Roms and Emulators. The roms are the games, and the emulators are the different systems. There are many different you can download both for free, and it is a commonly accepted thing. Its legallity is shady because they are free, but many argue the copyrights have experied and/or you cannot find the games anymore. What is your opinion on roms/emulators?

I used to have plenty of them. Contra, Mega Man, Bubble Bobble, Battle Toads, Kirby's Adventure, Lufia, and a few others.
Were they legal? I don't know. I hope they were.
I had to delete them when my hard Drive melted, though.

I have mixed views on them. First of all, I'm mostly against pirating Gameboy Advance, Gamecube and other recent ROMs, simply because games for those consoles are easy to find and it's not like paying a little money for a game will hurt you that much.
However, I find that ROMs of Super Nintendo games and NES games is alright, simply because it's very hard to buy those games anywhere these days, unless it's a second hand copy. If you can't get them anymore, or have to go through hell to get them (like going half way across the world), then I believe that emulation of games of a certain system is acceptable.

I agree that emulating systems like the PS2 etc is breaking the law. But I do have a couple N64 roms, the more rare ones that I can't find a gamestop etc.

I play roms all the time. They used to be widely available but the sites are slowly all being closed down. I own over a thousand still though. It is great to play the old games now and then. I don't mind about the legality of it. Millions download movies and mp3's illegally and I don't see all them getting prosecuted.

Well the legal stuff is that if you dont own the original cartridge then you must delete the ROM's after 48 hours or you are liable to be fined, etc....
The only games that I ever get for free are abbandonware, were the licence for the game hasnt been updated so effectively the game does not have an owner and so it is perfectly legal to download.
I used to play about with ROM's for the exceptionally old games that probably only exist with collectors of antique tech, like the ZX Speccy.

I use Amiga ROMS a lot, however there is no legal issue for me, as I still have several real Amiga's and piles of original software.
Some of my original disks don't work anymore, but should I need to, I can still show that I have bought them. This makes it legal for me to download the ROM's of this software.
Most of the ROM's I use though, I made myself with the disks I have that still work. It's quite easy to do, at least with an Amiga. I would imagine old consoles would be much harder though.
I'm looking at the moment for an English version of Escape from Colditz.......I can only find German and my disks are b0rked :(

There is a big debate if the 24/48 hours rule even exists. Some say they are illegal period, and some say no you can have them if you own them. Either way I still play them. I used to own almost 200 NES games and I still enjoy playing them from time to time on Nester.I still cannot find a good Gyrus rom though. The one i have is messed up, it plays but its screwy. If anyone can help please let me know. I still own the cartridge but it is messed up.
I was considering to but Donkey Kong on the GBA yesterday - but then I remebered a cheaper way :D

Not if you own the software you're downloading.
And especially not if you made the ROMs yourself, from the original disks you have.

Yes I do play roms. I only play the Cartridge roms though. Disc Roms (or ISOs) are hard to find and way bigger than most Cartridge roms.
^ To Rom a Cartridge, it takes a VERY expensive Data transver Device. they're used all the time with ROM files.

Unless you want to buy a device that will dump it for you, just download it
It's legal since you have the original
Mame is the fun if you like arcade games.. it has many shooters or run'n'jump... the complete 5600+ games is kinda huge to manage.. more than 20Gb I think

i like using emulators n playing old games, but emulators for consoles make the guns look so much better then on a monitor :) (not emulate the console games, play the old games on the console)

Yeah... What is everyones favorite roms?
- shooters from the late 90's like Guwange or Battle Bakraid
- Kof 96 and Kof 98
- All the Vs series on the CPS2 (XMen Vs Street Fighter, ...)
- Double Dragon
Not much of an old games fan I guess

There are some games in which roms seriously help, for example Advance Wars- some of the deathmatches are near-impossible to get the top rank on unless you save regularly, which can't be done in the same way without a rom.
However, I don't generally use roms. If I have the game, in 99% of cases I'm happy on the original console. If I don't, I feel uneasy about playing it illegally (and in any case the interface often isn't as good as on the console).

Has anyone played the Dragon Warrior series? I had the game at one time, but i can't find it so I play the rom.
I remember spending my nights on the FF series, Chrono Trigger, Secret of mana or Secret of Evermore on SNES.... ahhh good ole time O:)
Lufia 1 & 2 were fun but a bit too repetitive.. storylines were cool

I have an NES emulator and a gameboy emulator on my phone :D NES I've got Legend of Zelda, Mario Brothers 1, 2, 3, and on the gameboy emulator I've got GTA and Wario Land 3. Unfortunately the gameboy emulator doesn't have sound :(
If anyones interested the NES emulator is YewNES and it works on Symbian 2.0 (eg ngage, 6600, 7250, 3650) and the gameboy one is GoBoy and I believe it's the same compatibility.
