Thinking of setting up a CS server

I've been thinking of setting up a CS server :D

we could even play the games for this (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17614) thread there.

and I was wondering if anyone had any tips/had done it before???


i was planning on running it as a dedicated server on linux.. prolly with AMX or Admin mod as well

and, if i'm feeling paticularly genorous, ranking as well


would a 512/256kbps connection be enougth ???

It sounds like a good idea, but your connection sounds a little slow.

256k up is not enough, it'll be very laggy :(

what about something small scale like a 12 man? would that run OK?

net graph reports that i'm only (usually) using about 4-5kbps, out of a (thoretically) possible 64kbps..

thats at least 12 players


trouble is it's all a little complicated :(... well not the steam dedicated server, just admin mod :(

i'm sure i'll get the hang of ot :)

i worked it out on download speed not upload :(

Screw admin mod, use rcon, its so much easier, but you dont get slap :(

banning is easy

rcon banid <time> STEAM_<ID> kick

rcon writeid STEAM_<ID>


and thats all you need to know really

Wow this sounds really cool. I have a 1-2MB connection, but to be honest, I can't be arsed to run a dedicated server. I'd be glad to be a mod of the server, but I don't expect you to trust me. But, I'd do it if you want me to.

well, once the server's downloaded i'm going to put it on a spare computer downstairs... then connect to it and see what i can do :D

then i may open it up to the internet and see how many people i can get playing on it untill the lagg makes it impossible ;)


i may even attemp to convince my dad to pay for mo' bandwidth :D

EDIT: just been looking at prices and for anything more than 256kbsp upstream it cost's a small large fortune :(

they're lucky bastards in sweden, my friends have 8mbit for around £30 a month, you can barely get 1 mbit for that. :(

2mbit with 256 down is cheapish here... but 2mbit with 512 down takes a suden jump in price to over £2k/year

I have a server that could be used, its my clan's server and if we're just gonna be getting together for a laugh it will be alright. I have rcon and amx access on it, and we could play on there for a laugh, even have a little 5v5 or something.

i wasn't setting it up just for the w&b cs tread thing... more out of curiosity

and your server seems like as good a place as any to host a game...


i tried admin mod today... seems pretty cool, will give amx a go tomorrow morning :D


EDIT: tried AMX today, it's a little useless, and teh brightly coloured writing is annoying

Admin mod has so much more functionality, but is less user friendly, although the help is more descriptive
