First off are threads about music videos meant to go in the music or meeja section-just a general enquiry and unless the matter is resolved presue they should go in the meeja section!!!!!!
Anyways back to the point what do you think about music videos??are they good entertainment or a pointless waste of a few minutes??
Personally i think there both. Although not very constructive they provide good entertainment which is a decent alternative to doing nothing--anyways what do you guys think!!!!!

I think that music videos are a great idea, they can sometimes be very good and almost be like the song was made for that particular video. Some are thought provoking whilst others are funny. But like all things, some are just plain stupid or silly.
Depends on how they are done--->If they are just shite shots of the band/rapper/generic pop whore standing around a swimming pool talking about how bling they are, then they are shite.
But if its a nicely directed piece they can be quite entertaining
I reccomend spike jonz and micheal gondry. And at a push, traktor.

Most European videos suck, O-zone's Mia Hii especially, I don't know anyone who can even take that video or song seriously.
Although I don't like George Michael that much the video for his new song (forget what its called) is exceedly wicked :)

Music videos are extremely important. Most of the directors that you a curently worshipping have directed a number of music vids before their first movie.
Somehow, god alone knows how, Chris Cunningham was left out of the above suggestions. As for Spike Jonze? I find his stuff a bit shit (apart from Da Funk)
Chris cunningham...he is okay. His stuff kinda freaks me out mind.

music videos are the tools artists can use to help portray the meaning of the songs to the audience, to give a visualisation to accompany the song. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's pants, depends on who directs it.

but you must agree with the argument a lot of people put against music vids that the visual accompany vids provide often have no real meaning along with the song and can be seen as a frivolous post modern entertainment

Honestly, sometimes I'm more impressed, more deeply moved with a 4 minute music video than a whole 2 hour movie. So do I think they're a waste of time? No way. It's like saying a movies are a waste of time- sure, there are some stupid, pointless movies- but the great ones make up for it.
Though I'm quite biased- I've made quite a few little music videos and I was filming one earlier.. heh

Totally agreed
Radiohead's Just is probably more moving than a few "challenging" movies I have seen

Music videos are a way of spreading the music industry using something other than the radio, and attempting to be entertaining at the same time. There's nothing pointless in that- of course, it makes it more about the image of the artists (but magazines and tv does the same) and they also provide visual representations of the songs which help you connect more to the music.
There's some music videos I just stop and watch, forgetting the music, and just get lost in the beauty of them. There's also some wonderful special effects in some music videos, and I love almost any music video with a plot twist (Brand New- Sic Transit Gloria comes to mind). If you look at music videos as more of a kind of art form you get more of an appreciation for them.

I love the "That's Entertainment" movies, because they're mostly a compilation of the best musical scenes of the best musicals made by MGM, and I grew up watching those movies. So that's how I tend to see music clips, like mini musicals without all the boring chit chat. I think they stand on their own as an art form.
I think the same guy directed Madonna's "Frozen" and Bjork's "All Is Full Of Love." Whoever he is, he's a genius.

Chris Cunningham - one of my top 3 favourite music video director's. If you like Chris Cunningham you'd probably be interested in Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry. Hang on a minute and I'll find the links...Bundle of all 3 DVDs - Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000E660E/qid=1090193473/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i4_xgl/202-7067036-3408605)
Unfortunately that's region 1, and I think portugal is region 2, so you might have to buy them seperately (and presumably from a portugese shop/website). But yeah. Their videos are excellent.

no worries. I have the Chris cunningham one, which is the best one I think. It also has a bunch of adverts and a couple of "short film" things. And a little booklet with interviews about the music promos.

I think music videos are a good idea. Just like the songs artists write (well if they write their own songs) it is sometimes a way to express themselves and can make a great 3 minute video for our entertainment.

But the difference is the band normally has very little creative input into the video, whereas they have the run of things in the songwriting process. It doesn't make them bad, but it means that it's not always a good thing. I mean, when you get one of the afforemetnioned director's doing something cool with it, then it's great, but it means the video is something seperate from the song in a way. Sure it fits the song, but it exists as an individual thing too. On the other end of the spectrum, with a lot of MTV videos, it's just a 3 minute adver - so why not just listen to the song on its own without being bombarded with bling, bitches and baggy trousers (don't ask)
Music videos are fun and sometimes addictive.. I remember watching Outkast - Hey ya quite a lot.. best musicvid so far is Magical Trevor :rawk:
Too bad most TV chans spam them with ads :(

Aye, I can't really add any more to the list of music video directors, but Jake & Jim are fairly good too. I will be shooting a Music Video in September, so i'll let you know when I get that done.

They have worked with Stereophonic's and Geri. They did Geri's cover of "It's Raining Men". So now you know.
