I have found that any film to pants to put on the big screen they stick straight to video. I don't think i have ever seen a good film that has gone straight to VHS. Got any ideas?

Yes.
The Video Market makes almost as much money as the theatre industry. Most straight-to-video movies are crap, but they sell. Alot.
Best one I have seen so far is a Chronicles of Riddick anime movie made by Peter Chung, the man who made Aeon FLux and Alexander and a film in the Animatrix.

There are a lot of crap out there, but some real gems as well. I don't think it helps that straight-to-video movies are the same price as the main titles as people may be tempted to try them out if they were cheaper.
I also don't think it helps that every movie box is filled with lies and false quotes from magazines claiming it is "As hilarious as Four Weddings and a Funeral" or "From the special effects team that [nearly] worked on the The Matrix."
Hitcher 2 is a pretty decent straight to video release that I've seen recently, there are more but my brain is recovering from a weekend of heavy partying and I can't think of any at the moment.

Lion King 2 was rather good methinks and also Lion King 3.
Although most Disney sequels have nothing to do with the original and suck..
alot.
The lion king 2 and the return of jaffa (Cake) were quite good..
The rest are turd though..
the animatrix wasnt very good.
I hate you with all of my being.
