Long long ago, in a galaxy you are reading this in, I was but a young Zekey. And my favorite arcade game was a fanciful little adventure called Bubble Bobble.
It was simple enough. Bub and Bob were elves who had been cursed and turned into small bubble-spitting dinosaurs. In the hopes of one day becoming elves again, Bub and Bob descended into the cave of monsters and fought off many beasties using the powers of bubbles, water, lightning, and midi music.
I loved these games. I played every one.
A few years later, Taito, the company responsible for these enigmatic masterpeices of gamery, made a puzzle game unlike anything ever attempted before. It was called Bust-a-Move, and I fell in love with these games as well. I played each PS and PS2 version of this game, and lurved them all.
But my love was bad. I became so enamoured with these games, that I ignored my family, my friends, my food. Every night was a bubbly party filled with walking toasters and special guests like the RainBow Islands, the Liquid Kids, and Kirby. I soon found myself snorting the video games to give myself an unbeleivable high.
Then one morning I woke up. And all my tiny 50x50 pixel friends were gone. Their games still worked, but they themselves were AWOL. Taito, who had been a large functionary of the SNK Neo-Geo empire, were dealing with a crisis. SNK was out of business. They bounced back. But SNK went out of business several more times, taking with them the Metal Slug series and Samurai Showdown. Taito was forced to strike out on their own.
Years passed. And every day was like a lifeage of the earth. Then something beautiful happened. A company called Playmore bought SNK and brought them back. Beautiful things happened. King of Fighters came back. Neo Geo came back. Samurai Showdown came back. Metal Slug 3 was planned for an XBox release and things seemed right.
But Taito was nowhere to be found. Or were they? With a Grand Redux Taito burst forth into the Video Game world with all flags flying amongst the loud shouts of "woo" and "yay" and "ham"
Super Bust a Move for the PS2. Super Bust a Move 2 for PS2. Super Bust a Move 3 for PS2 and Gamecube. Super Bust a Move for the GameBoyAdvance. Oh yes! Bub and Bob were back with a new cast of characters, a hilarious new style, terrible box art, and a pure style of gameplay that was missing in the industry. Bub and Bob were still dinosaurs, but they didnt seem to mind any longer.
But something was missing. I had the yearning to play the game of my childhood. But alas, except for a breif rebirth on the Playstation, no Bubble Bobble dared to show its face in public.
And so, I waited. For I knew that due to all the nostalgic games on the GameBoyAdvance that a new Bubble Bobble was definite. And it was. Last year around June, a new game was announced. Bubble Bobble advance.
Oh how I danced. Oh how I sang. Oh how I shit myself with such strength that my pants shot off my body and buried themselves under three feet of soil.
But my joy...
......was not to last. The game was cancelled at the beggining of this year. It no longer would be, and sad I was.
The only thing that kept me happy was the thought that Metal Slug advance would be coming out this year. But today, as I walked throught the mall, after eating a patty melt, I walked into the Electronics boutique.
I made my way through all the Sudekis, Vietnam war games, and other shite until I found the used games section.
At first I didnt notice it, sitting there in front of me. I was too busy looking about. But my eyes dis fall upon it and welled up in tears, for there was my favorite game. Beautifully remade for the Game Boy color, with color, a wide screen, the works. I stood there in shock and with trembling fingers. With a delicate hand I reached out and grasped the game. It was only $20, and thus I purchased it, and have spent the last hour of today consumed in glee and playing it nonstop.
