So, what do you play?

Me:

Double Bass (1862, Farbe)
I try and play piano and guitar, but to not much success, I mostly use them for composing.

I am a mediocre classical/jazz guitarist (but I can play rock if need be), and I am self-taught on the piano. This doesn't mean I can play it - I don't know correct fingering or anything.

Do the following count as instruments? If so, I can sort of play them: kazoo, harmonica, vibraslap.

I've been playing bass guitar for about a year now. I can play rather well, but nothing too fancy. Just some of the White Stripes, Pink Floyd, Cream, and Led Zepplin. :weebl:

It's a shame we don't all live in one big weeblnbob house. We'd make one hell of a band.

This is what confuses me about a six string/bass guitar crossover (as opposed to double bass, which is a whole different kettle of fish), a bass guitar is just the bottom four strings of a six stringer down an octave or two - surely if you can play guitar you can play bass guitar too? [/wouldn't know, being a trained classical bassist initially]

Beef Magic
21-09-2003, 09:35 AM
I think that because Guitar is a more frontal sound than the bass, it's takes a bit of getting used to.

The Bass really has to play in time with the drums and has to keep rythem, while the guitarist can go fret wanking.

Physically and technique wise guitarists can manage on bass. Its the role that the instrument takes within the band thats the problem. Its probably like the difference between your Double Bass and say a flute. The two instruemnts perform completley different roles. Because an electric bass just looks like a big guitar with four stings (1 octave bellow btw) a lot of guitarists asume they can 'play' it. Often a guitarist doesnt grasp the subtlties of the bass.

Stevotheclown
21-09-2003, 02:43 PM
Playing guitar before bass gives you a slight advantage because your used to moving your hand freely around on the neck and using the different fingers to play!

dizzy
22-09-2003, 07:35 AM
it's difficult for me to play the bass simply because it's too damn big. Nothing to do with what strings they are / keeping in time and all that nonsense.

Guitars have smaller frets and thinner strings, thus it is easier for a little-handed person like me to play it.:p

Classically trained pianist (8-octave Kemble upright, in white :D), though moved into keyboards ages ago (5 octave Midi/Creative Live soundcard combo)
Can also play basic guitar, bass and drums. AND also a trombonist (Bb Con Director). Once played with an Americana punk band, which was fun \o/

Playing about with rhythms at the mo on a djembe, so hoping to increase my drumming abilities shortly.

Oh yeah, I can sing a little too, though I dont often advertise that fact.

Played recorder when I was very little, was also in the school choir and having keyboard lessons (only had a few of them though).
Gave up the recorder and took up flute instead, still singing in school choir and fiddling with keyboard and piano stuff a bit. Reached grade 2 with flute.
Sold my flute to buy a drum kit :D had singing lessons, plus still singing in school choir. Had a few months of drum lessons but left cos the teacher was a perv =/ Plus I only had free lessons while I was doing GCSE music - I finished GCSE's a few months after I started drumming lessons. I also fiddled around a bit with guitar, but my knowledge of them is VERY basic. Although I can read most types of music tablature (sp?)
Don't think I missed anything...
Oh! I once tried to play a Saxophone >.< those things take so much breath just to get one clear note!

I used to play the drums, and i weren't too bad at it. Played them for about a year and a half and was getting pretty niffty with them, but i seemed to get bored off them. I now have a bad habbit of druming on stuff when i'm bored.

I've played clarinet for um.. a little over 5 years now.. I'm first chair in school, and my director says I'm the concert master, hehe.

I actually wanted to give it up this year to do video editing and stuff, but my director refused to let me quit..

Oh yeah and when I was in 7th grade (second year playing) my band was 6th best in the state of Texas.. (<- my favoritest accomplishment)

Oh yeah, I play a bit of oboe too.. not very well though

I have fingers on many instruments.

I play drums. I have a Pacific Kit in my basement.
Sitting next to that kit are my B.C. Rich Bronze Series electric guitar and my acoustic classical guitar.
I also have a piano in my living room.
I don't own one, but I play a pretty mean bass as well.

I sing pretty damn well too, if I do say so myself. And I do. :weebl_lo:

I play the bassoon. Sabrina the teenage witch says it's a sexy instrument. True.

KualaLumpur1997
09-10-2003, 09:43 PM
I found a bassoon the other day. Literally. I was hunting around the musical instrument store cupboard in school, and found a large case which looked like it hadn't been touched for some decades. I opened it up, assembled the bassoon therein, (which had a functioning reed, to my surprise), and blew a rather clear F. Then one of my friends who, along with me, has a less-than-healthy interest in double-reeded wind instruments, yelled, " A bassoon!!!!!!". The next day he booked lessons on it, and bought himself a nice new reed for about £12. Then he ordered me to learn the Cor-Anglais, which is what I intend to do.

PS It is my lifelong dream to get grade 1 on every existing orchestral instrument. So far I have... zero. (I have grade 4 on classical Spanish guitar and grade 5 theory, but such things do not matter).

PPS Hugh, I meet very few competent bassoonists anywhere, the aforementioned friend who is currently taking lessons is crap at it - for some reason I feel the need to ask this question, but can you play a decending blues scale from the top C quickly on your instrument?

i play a Tanglewood Nevada Left Hander. Yep, i'm one of the few awkward people who play this way round, but there has to be someone to take over from where Kurt Cobain left off. Tim Armstrong is also an ace left-hand playing guitarist (he was the guitarist from Rancid and the Transplants)

i play:

electric guitar: squier bullet which is really bad and cheap cos' i'm poor but i'm good so it sounds half decent and i have a zoom 606 multi-effects pedal and a squier SP-10 amp which is only 10 watts so when i turned up the volume once it blew up and i had to rewire it.

acoustic guitars: an Admira 3/4 size and some yamaha tiny 1/4 size thingy.

and i play the bass and drumkit as well.

oh yes, the BEST INSTRUMENT EVER (sarcastically) the descant and treble recorder!

A viola player? Can you explain something to me..? Why do viola players use the Alto Clef? It doesn't seem necessary - the treble clef is so much more natural to read.

Only if you start with the treble - I'm a bass player, so my natural reading goes bass then tenor then treble then alto.

mmmmmm confuzzling :)

I read bass and tenor with bassoon. Learning bassoon helped my bass clef playing on piano actually, which was nice. Tenor is nice and easy once learned. Alto clef for violas = fewer ledger lines, same reason tenor is used by trombones, cellos, double basses, bassoons.

i started off with piano, so i can read bass and treble clef well.
