Here you can discuss all the jumpy and runny stuff here. In my very own thread.
So, first topic: Who will get the most golds?
For me it'll be the USA. Or the Russians. Because the bastards always win...

As an all round sports lover, the Olympics is of course a most enjoyable occasion.
For me, medal-wise:
1. U.S.A
2. Russia
3. China
4. Australia (go us!)
5. Germany
apart from that i'm not sure. Unfortunately for me i will be on holiday in Europe When the games start :nana:.

I have gone off Athletics completely.
I used to love watching Linford run to see if he could beat the Americans but when he is done for drugs it puts a downer on it. Now with the fastest Briton and fastest man and fastest woman all done for doping it makes the sport look like a joke. I will probably watch the Olympics for the football and basketball but the whole thing is ruined by meatheads and their need to be the best.

Live medal tables here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics_2004/medals_table/default.stm), updated constantly. Not much there at the moment as it's only the first day, but after two events China are currently leading, with Russia second and the Czechs third.

Britain now has two medals which is slightly good.
For those who missed it, we picked up a bronze in the Mens 200m butterfly, but the reigning olympic shooting chap went out today, and Pippa Funnels chances of winning the 3 day event were dashed by her poor performance, however we still have a good chance in the team event somehow...
All in all, the first few day's haven't been great for GB, but Ben Ainslie is looking good in the sailing, as is Amir Khan in the boxing, and Paula Radcliffe is favourite for the marathon on Sunday
I'm sure we won alot more earlier on in the previous olympics, but we're still in with good chances in many events, and 5 gold medals doesn't look too hard of a target.

I used to play it competetively, go to national tournaments and what have you. I gave it up a year or two ago though competetively. Still a fun game, but not the greatest spectator sport, the ball goes a bit too fast to follow really, especially if you aren't familiar with serious table tennis.

I've been watching the gymnastics and swimming pretty extensively, if only because they are televised at a time I'm willing to watch, that being 8-ish to 11-ish pm. And unfortunately for me softball is shown at 2 fing am and fencing isn't even shown on NBC, from what I gather, which pisses me off. Anyway, what do we think about Thelps and Phorpe? Phelps annoys me, because of all the hype and the fact that he is clearly illiterate. Thorpe on the other hand appears to be a truly good swimmer and also not so self-absorbed and egotistical as seven-medal-wonder-boy. To paraphrase someone on the Straight Dope Message Board, Phelps is not fit to lick Vegemite off Thorpe's ass.

I hope they show the table tennis. We've got our own table and I want to see how the pros play.
NBC and it's affiliates have over 1200 hours of 24/7 coverage of every sport. According to my handy dandy table I got with Sports Illustrated the following time blocks include table tennis (only referencing stuff after today, August 18th):
8/19 from 5 P.M. - 8 P.M. on Bravo
8/20 from 5 A.M. - 10 A.M. on Bravo
8/21 from 4 A.M. - 9 A. M. on Bravo
8/22 from 2 A.M. - 4 P.M. on CNBC
8/22 from 4 A.M. to 10 A.M. on Bravo
8/23 from 5 A.M. to 10 A.M. on Bravo
all times Eastern Standard Time. A lot of those times are early morning, which means in Britain they will be on in late morning to early afternoon.
I am looking forward to the football and basketball. Also baseball and ice hockey if they are appearing in Athens.
Football (soccer, not American), basketball, and baseball yes ice hockey no. That's a winter olympic sport. The americans didn't make it in baseball this year :( because they were beaten by Mexico in the qualifier (it's payback for us beating them at the world cup), however the Greek team (because they are automatically allowed a team in everyting) has 1 Grecian and 22 Americans with Greek backgrounds.
astral, thetrooper and piemanchris- you all sound like your doubting China. they are historically very strong and for years it has been them, U.S. and Russia in the top 3. They especially clean up in gymnastics and diving because those fit little people and table tennis.
jessabon- Phelph is the most gifted all-around swimmer in in 30 years can't you embrace that? Besides it's the media creating all the hype not him. No one really thought he could get 8 golds anyway. When Spitz was swimming the realay teams were stronger and there wasn't as much competition for him. He has won 5 medals in 5 events so far (3 gold 2 bronze). And if you're upset about the amount of coverage swimming gets, it ends soon. I think it's all done by the end of the first week.
As for myself I'm looking forward to the Taekwondo. It's the last 4 days. This is because all martial arts fighting is the same. And I'm going to the worlds in martial arts soon and want to see how good medal contenders fight, basically to see what I could be up against in September. Wish me luck there, or I'll eat your computer too.

Whaaa? It was a joke, merging the two names to create an image of one person, i.e, Bush and Gore memorably merged into Gush and Bore in the 2000 presidential campaign. Also somewhat like Paul Hamm and his "twin", "Morgan", whom we ALL know is just his other personality. I mean come on! That's not fair, allowing one guy to compete twice just 'cause he's got an alter ego! Imagine if Michael Phelps had the same disorder: he'd be swimming like 37 events! Which brings me to my next comments.
Jessabon- Phelps is the most gifted all-around swimmer in in 30 years can't you embrace that? Besides it's the media creating all the hype not him. No one really thought he could get 8 golds anyway. Thank you for your concientious coverage of all opinions in the thread. Things like that have become rarer and rarer, it would seem. K! On to the defense!
I do recognise Phelpsy is a very gifted athlete, and also that literacy, or even basic competence in one's native tongue is by no means a prerequisite to being an important participant in the Olymics. (I mean, just look at Carly Patterson!) (JOKE) Anyway, he does seem to be outracing Australia's-last-hope-for-redemption-boy, so all my comments go to waste. Also, I do enjoy the coverage of swimmimg quite a bit, and I am glad it is on at a felicitious time for me.
And the best of luck to you!

I take it back jessabon, Phelps is an idiot. He's swam 17 times already, and with one more swim could easily become an 8 medal winner, and he's dropping out of the last relay . Oh well, he still put up a good show (5 golds 2 bronzes) and helped push the U.S. above China in the medal count (Hamm kicking the Chinese guy's ass in all around gymnast didn't hurt either).
America's golden boy miler had trouble, got a time 9 seconds off his personal best, and was still only a few hundereths of a second off of the semifinals. Kinda sucks, since this guy's been hyped since he was 17. Track and field is the big event now that swimming's over, so I'm going to be engrossed again.

Thank you DarkNinja for your gracious concension. It is too bad really, indeed, that Phelpsy was unable to meet his goal. We are all very upset, as you might imagine. [/heavy sarcasm]. Ah well, he is an idiot , but a good swimmer, unfortunately. I was rooting for Pieter van der Booger Bahn, or whatever the Dutch guy's name was. It's SO much fun to say! Anywasy... The Mens 100m on tommorow, in the heats today six people went below 10 seconds, so tommorows final looks set to be very close, but my money would be on that Powell chap from Jamaica who jogged 50m and still recorded a time of 9.99seconds.
Whatever happens tommorow nights race is going to be great, hopefully with the World Record being broken as well :)
Sadly I don't think the two Brits have much chance of even making the final, but theres plenty more medals on the way so thats no worry

the U.S. relay team which Phelps opted out of won, and since he swam for them in the semis he gets a medal anyway, bringing his total count to 8. He tied the record for most medals and fell 1 short of Spitz's 7 golds.
Now swimming's over (yes!) and track can begin. I'm not sure who made the final, but if Maurice Greene did I'm pulling for him. He was the best 100m runner in the world and holds 4 of the 5 fastest times ever. He can do it, but at 30 he might be too old.

That's not right. The U.S., winner of 20 of 25 100m dashes in olympic history, sweeper of the 200m dash this year, and historically the fastest sprinting country in the world does not lose in the 4x100. It just doesn't happen.

Paul Hamm coming from behind to take gold and those damned Koreans making a fuss, Phelps earning 8 medals in the pool, the American men's 200m sweep, Iraq's surprise success in soccer, the Dominican Republic winning it's first gold medal ever (mem's 400m hurdles), hearing the floor shake and the crowd roar everytime a Greek competed, US softball allowing 1 run the entire tournament, and the emotional finishes of both marathons.

Would you honestly like the Olympics in London? You want hundreds of thousands more tourists coming and seeing the grotty bits of what could have been a wonderful place? There is no way that there would be any chance that even something like the transport system could be sorted out by 2112. Personally I would be embarrased.
I went to the Natural History building last year, and I couldn't believe how horrible the roads were in the surrounding area.
But as Piemanchris has just said, I don't beleive we have a chance anyhow.
