View Full Version : does life have a point/meaning?

I am rather religious, so I try to assume that life does have a point and everything we do here does matter.

However, sometimes it is easy to feel like life on earth is pointless. Most people live in order to eat and reproduce...so more people can live to eat and reproduce, over and over and over. Is there a point?

I think that if you want life to have a point, it has to come from within. You have to create your own purpose and your own meaning..otherwise life truly can be pointless

Your life has a point and purpose if you make it so.
Have a dream or a goal and work toward it.

Ex: I myself hope to get a Masters Degree in Computer Animation so I can work at Pixar one day. That is my dream.

the purpose of life is to be happy and fulfilled and ideally to have done something to better it, anything else is a bonus

There is no set meaning or purpose of life set down by an almighty creator or by the cosmic forces that govern the universe.

At least I don't believe there is.

We are here because we're here, we weren't put here, we weren't meant to be here to fulfill some ultimate purpose we're just here.

as far as I can see the only possible meaning of life would be to make the best of our being here, tomorrow we may die, not because we were meant to or because it has some purpose but because it's just what happens.

We're here to make the biggest difference we can to whatever we think is important. Nothing less nothing more.

Yeah that is how i feel about the point of life too. You have to work to make your life have a point.

The true meaning of life to love one-another as you love yourself

love is important but u cant love everyone as much as u do urself or they will walk all over you. Things like that go against human nature and dont work out well in practical life

but aside.

much as i disagree with Aristotle, he's right about the meaning of life, simply to try and be happy. (he say's more on the subject but the basic principle is sound unlike the rest)

It wont, I hurt my leg, missed two weeks of classes, failed everything and no one gave a shit.
I guess I'll have to be a hobo-freelance-artist until I reach 35 and decide to do away with myself.

you seem to be decent at computer art, you could always open a website with that kind of stuff on it, flash movies etc. That could help you get some cash for you to get back in to the swing of things. If you need help setting up a website thing email me. But it might work :)

Live your life the best way possible, try to be happy with it. Not much to it. If you're waiting for a real answer, you'll be waiting for a loooong time and think "Oh. Bugger' right before you die...

Why are we here? What's life all about?
Is God really real, or is there some doubt?
Well, tonight, we're going to sort it all out,
For, tonight, it's 'The Meaning of Life'.

What's the point of all this hoax?
Is it the chicken and the egg time? Are we just yolks?
Or, perhaps, we're just one of God's little jokes.
Well, ça c'est 'The Meaning of Life'.

Is life just a game where we make up the rules
While we're searching for something to say,
Or are we just simply spiralling coils
Of self-replicating DN-- nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay.

What is life? What is our fate?
Is there a Heaven and Hell? Do we reincarnate?
Is mankind evolving, or is it too late?
Well, tonight, here's 'The Meaning of Life'.

For millions, this 'life' is a sad vale of tears,
Sitting 'round with really nothing to say
While the scientists say we're just simply spiralling coils
Of self-replicating DN-- nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay.

So, just why-- why are we here,
And just what-- what-- what-- what do we fear?
Well, ce soir, for a change, it will all be made clear,
For this is 'The Meaning of Life'. C'est le sens de la vie.
This is 'The Meaning of Life'.

Every sperm is great

True, but there is more to life than Monty Python, you are turning this thread to spam.
Spam, spam spam spam spam spam spam spam SPAMIDDY SPAM!
Anyway back on topic, I believe that there is no meaning of life or such given to us by god to follow or anything, I believe that life is what you make of it. And I plan to enjoy and live my life for as long as possible

I think that there is a base/scientific meaning for life that all humans share:

1. The acquisition of food
2. having sex

On a base level, people exist to eat so they do not die. They also exist to have sex (which is just a trick that ends up causing more ppl)

It takes the active participation of an individual to make their life more meaningful than this.

I agree totally, the main point of life is to
be happy
make sure everyone else is happy
live for as long as possible and ensure there are people to live on after you
Everything Norbington said can mostly be summed as shit happens, have fun until it does.

i just this week found my purpose in life and im sure many of you will think differently after hearing it

i belive that there are only a few people who are supposed to actually "have a purpose"
the rest of us are supposed to fill in the void of there lives,
i beleive that everyone will, at one time or another, will meet one of these people and do something to them, be it as insignificant as opening a door or extreme like mugging them (example)

if you dont understand read it a few times then you will get it

i dont nessiseraly think that this is deppressing i belive that it gives everyone a small purpose

tell me what you think

I think your three main goals are to live, love and know. Our purpose is simple... to learn all we can, and love.

i used to think about it long and hard for years and years.

this is completely pointless stuff. we're breathing, eating, working to help other people live. thats it.
Survival.

nowadays i try not to think about this and blindly stumble through the blizzard. otherwise i might not make it. im not too sure why i have to either.

i think people can spend years in an attempt to discover the meaning of life but in the end they start to think too much about it and forget everything which goes along with life, i just think you need to go out there and have as much fun as possible all the time, i also think mickel jackson has something to do with the grand plan

ooooo lord i hope not.

I feel like the things that have happened in my life are pushing me in a certain direction.......i feel like i have some destiny and mission. Couldnt say for sure though...

I am really an atypical person..my life has been very atypical and i look at things quite differently. Sometimes i wish that i could just be normal and average like some other ppl are. I really do. :nana:

I think everyone's life is very meaningful and important actually...but i do think some people are meant to have a greater impact on the world than others.

If you believe that life has a meanig and you have apurpose, why are you wasting you're time here instead of changing the world?

The Matrix has done a lot to screw up my views on life, but the only things we seem destined for are to:

live
reproduce
die
(possibly be re-incarnated)

The point is.. should life HAVE a point?

Well.. in the animal live it surviving and reproducing... I guess we humans are a bit to good, I mean.. we are at the top of the food chain.. so life isn't exciting to us.. unless there will be aliens who are predators to us... but I guess that won't happen for a long time...

Kelp_Master
26-11-2003, 04:25 PM
no, life shouldn't have a point. when it does it becomes way too stressful, but if it has no meaning, well then it is just plain fun. I personally see life's only point as to enjoy it. I know that i have given this tremendous gift so why not make the best of it before it doesn't matter?

Shave

I believe in fate. In that what happens in your life happens for a reason.

I will quote from the Matrix Reloaded

Morpheus: 'what happened happened and couldn't have happened any other way'

Neo: 'How do you know?'

Morpheus: 'We are still alive'

when it's your time to go it's your time to go, so there's no avoiding it, and no-point worrying about your purpose on life. you will fulfill your purpose without knowing, and once you have fulfilled your purpose you will die. It's as simple as that
