What makes you like one song more over another?

I know for me it has to have fun catchy touching, in some way emotionally moving lyrics and a really good bass line.

But the question is what do you listen to and why do you like it.

my whole music taste is based around the fact that i love the sound of guitars.....this is why i like about 90% of guitar based music, from travis and their ilk... to stuff like metallica, punk, bits of death metal pretty much anything like that.

Different people look to get different things out of their music. Personally, I go for Fast-Paced, energetic, Catchy Guitar-Driven stuff. Hence the Liking for Punk.

For me it needs a story or meaning and guitars. It has to be able to be done live, no "bwibblewibblewibble" electro crap or hidden musicians. Play live!
good vocals are nice

I listen metal, mostly Heavymetal.
I like the balance between guitar, bass and vocals in Heavymetal, that's why I'm not very fond of Powermetal or Blackmetal.

I listen to alot of hip hop and synthesized music.

I just love my beats, samples and computer generated sounds.

with hip hop I love to hear a soulful beat with milky and meaningful or thought provoking lyrics.
Alot of people hate sampling, but I like it.
I mean, theres so many records and source sounds out there to play with that any recording becomes your little toy to play with and to build apon.

I love sythesized sounds as well and its alot harder to create something unique sounding than someone might think.
at the end of the day the computer is as much an instrument than anything else, as long as it creates sounds.

I couldn't just listen to one type of music. A: I couldn't pigeon-hole myself like that, B: I'd go mental.

I love rock, hiphop, progressive house, blues, jazz, electronica, drum&bass, breakbeat, punk, psychadelia, metal, singer songwriters, alt country, classical, gregorian frikkin' chant...

If I like something, I listen to it. I couldn't really say WHY I liked it. I mean, I listen to a huge range of musics, from Arvo Part to System of a down, and I listen to them in a range of situations. Some music I like because it helps me release stress (metal normally), some I listen to because it gets me into a trance (Drum'n'bass), some I listen to because it soothes me and helps me meditate (Classical - Debussey) and some I listen to when I feel just plain camp (Human League).

Obviously there's a lot more. I just can't tell you why I like them all.

possibly

or just hasnt really stopped to consider what different types of music mean and what they are trying to express...

I think whats more important is that music, can embody so many emotions just as quickly as it can evoke them.

I think the point of a really good song, one that can transcend time, is that it is able to make us think now, just as much as it was able to make us think during the times it was composed.

There are so many things that could attract me to a piece of music. I love guitars so i like listening to stuff where i can hear the instrument at its best. I also love the power that electronic music can have over entire crowds of people. Im a sucker for a good melody so some pop music gets stuck in my head. I dont think i can really define much beyond i likes what i likes!

Its easier to say what i dont like. Music that has no creativety feeling soul groove or power.

I think I'll dive into, Why I so much prefer rock and punk music to everything else, with detailed lists so as to explain my sometimes overemotional rantings to diss other styles.

Why I like ROCK
1) Instruments are key to most of it. Guitar driven music is simply the only way as far as I'm concerned. Making little beats on your techno machines and synthetic stuff just isn't good music. And hey, a beatbox ain't no set of drums.
2) Versitility. Isn't it great that with the same singer, the same instruments and the same band can come a beautiful ballad and a thrashing masterpiece? The ability that bands have to decide their styles and how they play greatly enhances all bands.
3) Realism. Now I can't speak for EVERY band and artist out there, so don't give me crap about some rap group you like that doesn't fit the general trash talking stereotype, or some pop artist who is totally creative, because I won't deny them a little tiny bit of credit here and there. But rock music is great emotionally, most writers aren't idiots. They don't spit out about their gangs and their ho's and all that through entire albums. Bands have EMOTIONS, unlike artists like Britney and dare I say, 50 Cent.
4) Decent Lyrics. No, not every rock band has a great poet. But the ones that do are worth paying every bit of your attention to. I don't see anything creative about "oh baby this" and "oh baby that". I won't stand that at all.

Why I like PUNK
1) Now, we establish that the guitars are amplified fo' sure. Punk is a happy sort of music, catchy, entertaining, great for parties! The drums keep pace to the speedy rhythms and catchy choruses about how that girl dumped you (no, not the emo version) and all that related stuff.
2) Much room for inguinuity. Bands like Refused and The Dillinger Escape plan (more on hardcore later) do crazy stuff with their instruments, and where can originality come without versitile pieces to work with.
3) Mohawks, funky hair, Jumping around, Rebellion. All that goodness that you know punk used to have. Being different, being crazy, and being FUN.

Why I like HARDCORE
1) Brutal Vocals splashed with melody that combines creativity with straightforward musicianship. Yes, this is a like, if you like rock music, read on kinda thing, if you don't appreciate screams, don't get into hardcore, but their are so many variations of it, and so many ways to do it that you can't describe it in one band.
2) Definitly Deep music. The poetic beauty of some hardcore bands cannot be matched by any genre.

In conclusion, I look for those elements in the music I listen to, and that is why I listen to what I listen to, ROCK MUSIC, and that is all.

I didn't untill recently know that Deathmetal was actually a lot like Heavymetal in many ways, with the major difference in the vocals, Deathmetal has growl.
Now my main types of metal is Death and Heavy.

The amazing thing with music is that a certain song can make you feel happy, sad, energetic any emoticon. They can be controversal, raise questions cause debates.

Pop music in my opinion is just bland and boring, mainly happy and extremely predictable. I love rap but i listen to a variety from disney songs to rock and eminem to Grease tunes. I like songs for many reasons, to be catchy, for the lyrics to mean something to express my views thats why i love eminem so much, his lyrics actually mean something and people like him aren't just singing to make money they are singing to prove a point. My views anyway...

I always feel like I"m the meaning behind eminems songs...

and isn't the point of being a musician to make money, if he was doing it just for the sake of doing it why would be bother being on such a huge label?

anyone feel like clarifying?
