View Full Version : Cartesian Dualism or The Matrix

I realise this is a hot topic and I apologise if I'm going over ground already covered here many, many times but according to Cartesian Dulism the theory is that there are two types of material in the world. There is the mental or mind, and the physical or body.
However, after watching the Matrix, their theory is we are all simply batteries living in a big energizer bunny.
So, which theory do you prefer, or do you have a theory of your own you would like to share with your fellow batteries?

It's a case of weighing up the prosand cons. In cartesian dualism you have o accept that your reality is not someone else's reality, and that can be a difficult concept. The Matrix however leads ultimately to The Matrix Revolutions which is a sorry pool of steaming rat piss. So it's Cartesian Dualism all the way I'm afraid...

String theory.
we are only real if we belive we are
but to belive it we have to know what real is
so if we dont know it
why do we exist??
(think about it)

You don't have to know what's real to exist. My table exists but it doesn't know what's real.

in the 2nd or third movie it says the humans had it wrong : they're in cell not because they need power from them (as they have power stations) but because they were all originally programmed not to harm humans or something.

did they? i thought that it was a bit pointless having them there in the first place.
but if they are programmed not to hurt humans, how come the squid things kill people?
sadly, i don't think the actual film is really worth discussing in that much detail: there are too many plot holes.
anyhow, how come we've only got two options? can't i believe that reality is real? or is that just silly?
ugh, string theory. reality is nothing more than a load of wobbles in some bits of cosmic cotton, is it? it's kind of depressing, really. shame they can explain it so it makes sense, isn't it?

It doesn't have plotholes it has plot platforms. You know, small portions of plot in a sea of hole.

They never say that in the movie and they certainly do not show any aversion to killing humans.
