Paint Contest #11

1. You draw and paint a picture based on a suggestion/topic set by me, and only me. the idea is to draw everything yourself. No source-materials like existing drawings or photographs are allowed.
2. Suggestions and topics that you consider to be fun can be told to me in PM.
3. You are allowed to use MS Paint or similar.
4. Allowed file formats are GIF and JPEG. No other formats. I strongly recommend using GIF, as the compression is much better for paintjobs, though not all of you will be able to make that format.
4a. No BMP!
5. No pics that are Hugh Mongoose.
6. No pics bigger than 75 kilobytes, (if it has to be bigger, put up a link instead of the picture itself)
7. Entries are judged by a poll. When enough entries have been made, I will set up a poll (or it will be set up by a mod) and you can vote the winner and the runners up.
8. Only one entry per person. If you make a second, tell us which one is the real entry for the contest. (this is to make polls easier to manage)
9. Rewards are familiar: three :weebl: for the winner, two :weebl: for the runner up, and one :weebl: for third place.
10. Can your pics be rude? Of course! But remember their are kids watching, and people at offices too! If it's too rude, or contains nudity, don't post the pic. If you have to, post the url with a warning.

Pinkerbell? Do you have Photoshop? If so draw your entry in Paint save it as a bitmap then open up Photoshop, open your Paint image and save it as a gif. Should look like the bmp but be a much much smaller file size. Hope that is of some use to you. :)

well, heres some fluffy snow, and the reason things look daft when not bmp if that gif has a more limited pad, so uses a blend of shades to produce the right colour. Personally, JPG looks far better, as demonstarted by my pic about lightning.:weebl:

about Gif and Jpeg:

Gif has a limited number of colours, from just two, up to 256 (in general).
That way it is the best way to encode files made in paint, because almost always the number of colours featured in your drawing is less than 256.

Jpeg has a more mathematical way of encoding, which is very good for photographical images / multi-coloured images.
You can set the encode quality of a Jpeg so high, that it will encode a 256 or less coloured images without loss of quality, but then the filesize will be much bigger than with a Gif.

Not all copies of Paint can code Gifs, and those who can, often do a crap job.

Best thing is to save as a BMP, then use Photoshop or a similar program to save as a GIF. In photoshop, use the Save For The Web option, where you can manually set the number of colours in your Gif. Try to obtain the lowest number, without loosing colour information. This way you will have the best possible quality with the lowest filesize.

If you cannot do this, because you do not have the right programs, try using a 2nd program (not paint) to encode the saved BMP file to a Jpeg. Try using a program in which you can manually set the encode quality. You will see that a reasonably low quality may still look good in photographs, but will look crap with paint jobs. Try setting the encode high, to a setting in which you can no longer see any distortions. Note that the filesize is relatively big.

If you cannot do that, use the Paint program itself to save it as a Jpeg. Pray that the voters will look past bad encodings, and judge the art that lies beneath

Ultimately: you can ask a friendly forumite with encoding skills, to change your BMP into the best possible GIF.

I consider using the same tools as Ms paint in photoshop similar. the only thing different is the colour. this isnt exactly the height of my artisitc talent at work its just a doodle and it was done entirely in photoshop. When poofbird said "MS Paint or similar", I thought similar meant the equivilent if you use linux or mac os.
