Been a while hasn't it?

Well it seems like HOCAS has become a bit stagnant of late. The walls need new paint, there's rising damp in the corner and I'm not even going to go into the state of the downstairs loo, so I think its time we celebrated its glorious past by bringing back the photomissions.

Before your time? No problem. The premise is simple. Each week, you budding photographers are given a series of phrases to which you have to submit an appropriate photograph to each which you think best represents your interpretation of said phrase.

For example, if one of the challenges was 'This is a dog', then a picture with a dog in would clearly be the way ahead. But its not going to be that easy. Oh no no.

As lame as internet competitions are, prizes are a bit tricky, but in some effort to curry your favour I will allow the winner of each week's challenge to proudly display the photomission icon in their sig for as long as they wish:

http://www.nicebutwrong.com/images/photomission.jpg

any stealing will result in a swift kneecapping from me. Anyway, here are the rules...

All pictures MUST be taken by you
All pictures MUST be taken during the course of the challenge week
All pictures MUST be hosted by yourself, this should not be a problem if they are your own
Please keep res at 640x480 or under for ease of browsing
Please try and keep file sizes at 80k OR LESS

I am open to suggestion on future challenge categories, so feel free to PM me with yours, and if you need help with resolution/file size questions, please get in touch too.

So there you go, the first challenge will start tonight and will run until next Sunday night where I will announce the winner. This is all work permitting for me as I am a grown up, and also my decision is final and fabulous.

Good luck, and may the best man (oh alright, or woman) win

OK here we go, lets see how we get on with 4 categories this time. They are:

the unbearable nonsense of yellow
I don't want it to go away
It was like that when I found it
Stuck-on

You have until next Sunday evening (19th) to make what you will of these

Best of luck

I'm incredibly dense, please clear something up for me.

Are we to take one photo of one category, resulting in one photo total?
One photo of each category, resulting in 4 photos?
Or one photo with all four elements in it?

Cheers! I'm looking forward to taking part though :)

[edit - upon rereading the first post while more sober, I conclude you want one photo for each topic, thus resulting in four photos. Sorry 'bout that!]

Call me dumb, but does that mean we can't use luxuries such as Photobucket, DeviantART and ImageSHACK?

In that case I need webspace and a camera >_<

moog
12-12-2004, 10:16 PM
you can use those things. You don't need your own exclusive webspace, just somewhere that won't mind hosting them for you.

our dear weebl doesn't have a limitless supply of internet paper for you all to scribble on, so yes hosting these things yourself would make an old army drunk very happy

Okay just a few questions. Can we edit the pics? I do not mean like heavy editing just like sharpening the image or adding a boarder. And does each category have a winner or does one person with the best four pics win?

moog
15-12-2004, 04:52 PM
editing pics = yes for colour enhancement, sharpening etc; no to weird filters that make you look like a loser. Adding lens flare = ban

Overall there is only one winner, NOT one per category

Lets see some pics!

Ooh, this sounds like fun :) I'm glad that we can using hosting sites, was starting to concoct a scheme to use my Uni webspace till I read that.. may not be able to enter this week, but love the idea. It's like a reverse Caption Contest :D

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner.

Thank you all so much for your participation, I was worried that we wouldn't get off the ground with this one but all the entries have been excellent, so again thank you for taking part.

Hopefully I'm not going to be accused of favouritism on this one, but the clear winner for me has to be Spoony. Every one of the four pictures was individual, well thought out and obviously had a lot of time taken over them.

Here are those pictures once more so you can judge for yourself:

http://www.atjd10.dsl.pipex.com/Photo/foundit.jpg

http://www.atjd10.dsl.pipex.com/Photo/stuckon.jpg

All of this of course means you are now the proud owner of the first photomission sig addition:

http://www.nicebutwrong.com/images/photomission.jpg

PLEASE those of you who entered and didn't win - do not be discouraged. This is an ongoing competition and I look forward very much to seeing your entries for this week. You all really did do very well and this is a good incentive to hone your talents even further.
Speaking of this week, here are the four all important categories that you must make your own:

I'm fucking gorgeous
Where I end, you begin
Welcome to my world
The end of the internet

best of luck, and more importantly, have fun!

see you next week

Aww crap. I've got a great one for the "I'm fucking gorgeous" pic, but it was taken at lunchtime on sunday... does that mean that it's out of the challenge week? I count sunday as the start of the week if that helps :( I spose I can try to recreate it when I go home again..

And yeah, I think it would be great if you entered, you master of photography you :p

oh heavens

thank you so much for your entries, but i am going to be a terribly bad man now. This week's competition is going to have to run for another week. I really wanted to get it done in time but it would seem time wasn't on my christmas list this year, hence i am running around like a blue assed fly and have about 10 minutes in front of the computer for the next few days.

I will be back in my lovely home soon, and when i am we will get this thing back on the road. Sorry for the fuss but it IS the holidays, you just have a bit longer to wait to claim your glory.

I'm very impressed with what i've seen so far I must say...

editing pics = yes for colour enhancement, sharpening etc; no to weird filters that make you look like a loser. Adding lens flare = ban

Overall there is only one winner, NOT one per category

Lets see some pics!

hmmmmmm.

It is very unusual to have that many toenails...I think you should see a doctor or maybe join the circus. If you are lucky, Batman might adopt you.

Oh wait! It's edited!!

Oh no, it's just color enchancment and sharpening.

( when you go to the circus, make sure you talk to "mister joe", tell him he still owes me 50 dead crickets for the game of "where's the penaut" we played with the elephant named "fat fatty mcgee".)

thanks you very much to you chaps that entered, its great of you to take the time to have some fun with this. Sadly, I am coming up to a very busy time and subsequently ain't going to be around much. Pending a chat, I am hoping Spooneh will step up to the plate and assist in this my busiest hour for a few weeks. We'll see, but hopefully things will keep going as normal.

Anyhow, it gives me a sense of delight in my underpants to announce that this week's winner is..... katox!

your pictures just rock, the filthy drug addled glamour of them just makes them a pleasure to look at. Well done! I can offer nothing as a reward as you already have one! I hope you are satisfied with knowing you have done a good thing. Here are your winning pictures:

'It was kill or cure really.'

Without being a spoilsport, I personally disagree wqith extending the photomission date for one person. That doesn't really seem very fair. In the past people have had to work hard to get their entries in on time and if you cant... well tough luck. Admittedly I have got my entries in rather late but they are still in on the right day, also I am famed for my last minute photos.

Well, my photos will be fashionably late as always. However, I thought it might be a good idea just to remind everyone of the rules of the photomission, as laid down by the kernal upon it's start.

Happy snapping :)

Okay, so I had a really cool idea here, but I had no means to reach the ends I wanted. No model, and none of the cool backdrops I had in mind. So, you get pictures taken with a timer against a bathroom door, and what appears to be an exercise in narcissism/camwhorism. My hair is in a perpetual state of messy.

Great entries this week folks! This week I'm going to give a quick opinion on each entry in order of apperance:

nuxx

Works really well as a set, each image has a kind of texture to it.A nice abstract approach to the brief. Each image has a real sense of 'texture' for want of a better word.

piemanmoo

Wasn't instantly obvious how these answered the brief. I realised having clicked the links that these statues actually represent the elements. Unfortunatley the shots are not even in focus. I can see what you were getting at. Photographing someone else's art is not what I was really after and the images should have at least been well exposed, composed and in focus.

ly

I love the colours! A vibrant set of images. Ironically when I set the challenge I said in IRC "If I see candles for fire I will disqualify the entry!" HOWEVER it is a great image. You may have gone for a fairly obvious fire shot, but it is executed superbly. I'm not quite feeling the air one is the only down side. A superb set.

stupid american girl

Nice idea, works well as a set. I like the use of colour and expression to signify the elements.Air and Water are the strongest as there is somereal emotion in the pose, Water looking so so sad and Air looking so happy! Well done, great set.

JimeH^

Again this works well as a set. I like the reflection detail in the tap. I think perhaps the interpretation is a little too literal but otherwise a fine attempt!

piemastermike

I feel like one shot in portrait and the rest in landscape broke up the set a bit. Also I'd be interested to hear why you went for black and white? Your images are well composed and exposed. Nice and "clean". In the fire shot my eyes are drawn to the words on the can. They are all pretty irelavant apart from the word flammable - which we can't really see. Also I know what you are getting at in the Air shot but the Fish and Chips sign is overwhelming. Be carefull when including things like this in your shots. If its meant to be there then fine - if not get rid.

So well done to everyone. Please don't take critque the wrong way - I don't pretend to be a expert in this field or an amazing photographer. I have however spent years anyalising images - moving and still (Media graduate  ) and I know what I like!

Anyway I'm sure you are fed up with my ramble.

3rd April 2005

The deadline for this Photomision will be Sunday 10th April 2005 at 6.00pm

Instead of differnt phrases this week I am going to give you one topic. I want the entries to be a set of 4 images entitled:

People

Again I want the images to work as a set. I'm particularly interested in seeing some good portraiture OR reportage style images. If the set tells a story - then all the better!Go have a browse around the 'net and have a look at some other photographer's work.

This week can you also include in you post what equipment you used?

Good Luck!

Apologies for no entries this week. I am off to Morocco today so I've been busy packing all week. I got 2 photos in which were going to be part of a set of my whole family:

Belated Judging for Photmission Ending Sunday 10th April 2005

The subject was 'People' and the conditions where a 4 image set. I noted that I would be interested to see either classic portraiture or reportage style images.
piemastermike, katox and mittens entered.

piemastermike

Allthough you could only manage half the set before you went away your entry shows promise. I think you need to consider the way you use lighting and I would be intersted to know how the shots were lit. I think the use of a plain white background has a very "now" feel to it. It's nice and clean and modern. I like the way a white background does not detract from the subject. It also makes colors stand out.

Would have been great to see the full set, hopefully we will se some portraiture from you in the future!

katox

Interesting approach kat! I think you managed to avoid simply documenting someone else's work (for example just photographing the images on the sign with nothing else in shot). I think with a little more thought towards the compostion of the area around the signs and how the images work as a set this entry could have been a little stronger.

mittens

I love the use of lighting and contrast in this set. Has an almost film noir feel to it. Good composition and creative use of exposure and they work great as a set. A real sense of atmosphere

And the winner is......

Reluctantly I have chosen the photo that happens to have been taken with the best resolution camera. I've said "reluctantly" because I don't want it to look like that is the only reason I've chosen it.

This week's competition was VERY close in my opinion and Ly managed to swing it with her first picture. It struck me straight away as a fantastic idea and I loved it. Well executed.

The others had obviously had a lot of thought put into them and Maxxy_P's "Illusion" still baffles me as to how he achieved it.

Well done to all that took part and I now hand over with great anticipation to Ly to set next week's task. I look forward to being able to enter again!

Ly

Cool, thanks mike :D

RIGHT this week's competition will be judged purely on concept. That means it doesn't matter what quality your camera is, use a webcam, 8mp Nikon, or even a camera phone if you like. I won't judge through your resources, just how you've thought it out. Try to get a feel for your subject, and think of how it could be interpreted.

Yeah, this takes away a large part of photography, but it's just to show that anyone can take meaningful photos. Maybe it'll wake the photographer in you and later you'll be able to get your hands on better equipment and go professional, but hey, that might just be me hoping this is a good idea :P

Okay. This week's catergories are:

Clinical Living
Behind the Fringe
Growth and Repair
Primary

As before, please just choose two. Competition ends next sunday, 6pm.
Also, as an extra little challenge, add an explanation of the concepts, I'd like to see how your minds work ;) - you don't have to do this part though.

Good luck everyone :D

Ok the first one is Growth and Repair . It is a photo i took near my house in the bush because it shows some trees that have been cut down and some trees that still remain. This is meant to represent the trees that man has cut down so many of, and that now we are aware of the problem, some people (definately not all) have been planting more trees again to help them re-grow and what we need right now is for the forests to grow back once again. also, at this time of the day, the sun was in the right place to help show the beauty of our natural environment.

http://img269.echo.cx/img269/8808/growthandrepair6zr.jpg

This one is Clinical Living which I arranged to show the shear number of products people purchase to keep everything clean, with the shower on the left and closer to emphasise it's importance in keeping people clean and how much it it used. Also the lights reflecting on the mirror make it look like bars of a jail cell where sometimes people are trapped in the thought that they must look beautiful to be able to take a step outside.

Growth and Repair: You grow up, you grow older and you grow out of favour with those childhood toys that kept you happy for hours on end when you were a child. As they fall deeper into the back of the closet the dust grows and they start to break apart, until one day you decide to take them out and repair the old memories.

http://img172.echo.cx/img172/5128/meccano3ij.jpg

Clinical Living: whenever they enter my house, most of my frineds comment that its too clean, that its too muck like a showhome. Well their mostly right, it is clean, organised and slightly empty. That is, of course, apart form the occasional odditie you finy lying around

Aaaaand the winner is Skorne!

Ok the first one is Growth and Repair . It is a photo i took near my house in the bush because it shows some trees that have been cut down and some trees that still remain. http://img290.echo.cx/img290/3364/clinicalliving2tx.jpg

It was really difficult to choose >_< but I went with Skorne's pictures because I loved the Clinical Living concept. Including all those things in the photo and even using the lights as prison bars was great, in my opinion. And the Growth&Living picture showed both sides of an important issue of deforestation... It highlighted views of contrasting sides but put them together, and that's what I liked about it.

Congrats Skorne, but the other entries were very good too (:

Your go to judge :P and as pmmike said (who disappeared :( ) I'm looking forward to entering too :)

Thanks Ly, sorry about the wait. Since the time here is about 8 hours ahead of England I will be judging on monday morning which would be about sunday midnight. Once again, choose two subjects and I'll judge on idea, concept, and anything else that make's your photo's unique.

I think one or two of these topics have been used before but they are what I would really like to see done by you. They are:

Peace/Tranquility
Freedom
Belonging
Deceiving

Ly
24-05-2005, 06:17 PM
well since i already have my photos, why not enter early.

some of you will have seen my first one on DA XD

Deceiving
Kind of an obvious concept to go with, no real story behind it. Tricky poker dealers is what i blame it on. But I like how it looks...

http://img190.echo.cx/img190/1229/cards8yx.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

Belonging
My rose is dying ): I got it on my prom, and after trying to dry it and keep it, all it did was die. Oh well.
This is to do with that feeling of knowing where you belong, but not being able to get there. I took it from inside, with the trees being separated from the rose by glass. It's like because the rose can't get there, it's slowly withering away... It's also wrapped in plastic (because that's how it was when i got it, no real reason for that :P) which is responsible for the weird light. Hmm, it could be suffocating the flower...

Wow i talk randomly. I'll just get on with it and post the pic. Heh.

Freedom
I felt the title "freedom" really fitted this photograph perfectly as it seems to encorporate different aspects of the word. There is the litoral sense of "freedom" which is that you could roam freely across the landscape, run as far as you like and never be stopped. However it also carries another, deeper meaning. The photograph also represents a person's freedom in their mind, the freedom from constraints on their imagination, freedom from worries and anxiety. In a landscape like this, on a day like today, you could escape everything. I certainly did.

http://img196.echo.cx/img196/7103/sky10bl.jpg

Decieving
Again, this photograph is designed to convey a dual meaning. Firstly, the idea of a deception of the curvature of the bread bin (the shiny jazzy thing) distorting the view of the sky reflected on it. There is also the idea that the sky can be deceptive, we don't know quite what it is going to throw at us, might be sunny all day then suddenly chuck it down. Clouds. They look like things, but are actually just water vapour.

Well done in advance Ly. Those photos are kickass for want of a better word.

Belonging
This is my mother's wedgwood tea service, scratched, chipped and diminished in number over time, it still exists as a cohesive group in spite of their individual faults. There's nothing more to belonging than that endurance, I believe.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/onooroz/wedgewood2.jpg

Freedom
Cliche as it is, I can think of nothing more free than flight. Except, perhaps, the optimism of a childhood game based around what are really only artfull falls.

Once again, this round was extremely close, every single entry was amazing Ly, piemastermike and mittens, I guess part of the challenge is picking the winner (nice and cliche). But i chose the winner to be piemastermike! Congratulations. Both pictures were great, I love the way you showed the kids playing, just doing what they feel like, and as you said "a person's freedom in their mind, the freedom from constraints on their imagination, freedom from worries and anxiety.". I also like how it transitions to the sky which has no limits (apart form gravity). In the second picture, I love it how you used the reflections to present a distorted vision of the sky and the concept of how it can be deceiving itself.

Freedom
I felt the title "freedom" really fitted this photograph perfectly as it seems to encorporate different aspects of the word. There is the litoral sense of "freedom" which is that you could roam freely across the landscape, run as far as you like and never be stopped. However it also carries another, deeper meaning.
