For the last week or so it's been taking me several goes to get my modem (PCMCIA, card, slotted into laptop) to connect to the Internet - usually it hangs on "Dialing 0860blablabla..." or "Verifying username and password..." and I have to pull the cable out of the side of the laptop at this point because pressing "cancel" doesn't always disconnect it (even though it isn't connected). I'm running out of things to try! I've updated Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and they found a couple of things - I removed them but it made little difference. I've already removed a couple of things using HijackThis (with help from Google) but I was wondering if I've missed anything.

Here's my latest HijackThis log:-

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give, either with the log or any other advice on what I could do to sort out this modem. Thanks. :)

I'm not sure if it helps, but I used to have the same "hang on cancel" issues with me old US Robotics PCI modem under Windows Millenium. I stuck some initialisation strings and it worked quite niceley.

Have a looksie round some tech forums for your modem model number, though i'm sure you've done that already.

Hmm. I haven't actually. :p I'll go get the box, find out the number, and Google it. When I said "running out of things to do", I meant "...short of uninstalling/reinstalling which I'm hoping it doesn't come to." Tonight I connected on first try, but I still don't trust it ¬_¬

Do you have, perchance, an HP pavilion notebook PC? Just judging by the way you are using a synaptics touchpad and IE 6 SP1. Anyhow, try uninstalling all the toolbars you downloaded for IE, then deleting some of the thingies using Hijackthis.

It's Packard Bell. I think it might be a problem with the switchboard in my hall, now I think about it. I just remembered - the switchboard went down one day and since it's been back up I've been having these problems. Maybe there's a connection. D'oh! :p I'm going to go to reception tomorrow and explain what's happening and ask for teh help (haven't done this so far because I'll have to do it in FRENCH omg, but it should be OK).

Tip: Upgrade from dial up to dsl or cable. It's well worth the money.

I don't know what to tell you, I don't know anything about dial-up. I used it once, blew up my piece of crap dial up modem, and installed a dsl one.

Try some virus scans.....

I'm going to go to reception tomorrow and explain what's happening and ask for teh help (haven't done this so far because I'll have to do it in FRENCH omg, but it should be OK).

Simply run into the reception like a loon waving about yer PCMCIA card. Ask them to "fix the bloody telephone system", and if they don't get it, say it louder and slower. Otherwise just start drawing parallels between the staff and the French football team. At best, they'll understand what you're on about. At worst, they'll get a (hopefully) english speaking copper to escort you out of the building.

Everyone's a winner!
