View Full Version : Gmail upgrade to 2GB. April Fool's?
Bluest Light

Gmail have it announced that they are upgrading everyone's space to a massive 2GB.
Now, I don't think this is a joke as they've already done the whole 'Google Gulp' thing and I've checked my Gmail account and the free space is slowly rising.
At the moment I have 1344 MB of free space.
Opinions?
edit: 1345 MB

Well, Gmail admit that's a joke at the bottom. But there's another link 'What's new' that states as of Gmail's first anniversary, it's being upgraded.

Assume:
Google have 500 dedicated machines for Gmail.
They each have a RAID setup of 2tb of space.
An account is 2gb. That's 1000 accounts per machine (assuming they all fill up)
So on all the machines, that's 500,000 accounts.
Seeing as Google is one of the most successful businesses on the internet, they probably have a lot more, and let's face it, how many people actually fill the accounts?

Fine, I was just stating that I seemed to have more than anyone else said.
Can anyone guess why they're slowly getting larger? I'm betting it's as they're gradually upgrading accounts to make sure they don't overload servers with too much of a change at once.
Mystical Parrot
01-04-2005, 06:27 PM
na it would be alot easier to just change it, they're doing it for style or something
budrick
01-04-2005, 06:36 PM
I doubt it, those are DESKTOP drives, server drives are fecking huge
It's more that server drives are fast and expensive. They'll most likely have high spin rates for fast access times, and use high-speed SCSI interfaces.
What I WOULD like to know is what form of RAID they're using. I'd hate to think they're using the form that combines multiple hard drives into a single logical volume.

no joke, the information drink is obviously april fools but it makes sense.
hotmail thought gmail was an april fools joke. but it turned out to be real and they got SCARED.
makes sense to double it on the aniversary, hell i hope it goes to 3gb to wipe it in hotmails face next year.
i am staying with gmail for life now, that kind of space is brilliant service. they deserve to get a lot of nice new customers with the service they provide.
you still have to remember this is just storage. at the end of the day less than a few % of customers will use this full 2gb. i am using 6mb and i have hundreds of e-mails so far.
i pop mine too, but it's nice to have a backup if the mac ever dies or gets nabbed

G is for growth
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more
.... yay :p

Here's a conundrum. Say Gmail space reaches about 3GB and then runs out of free free space (if that makes sense,) when more users join up or are invited, would our space go down?
Mystical Parrot
02-04-2005, 10:22 PM
i dont think google has to worry about being able to afford the space, its worth a massive amount of money and as it said when it started gmail it only costs $2 per gb to run an account. a lot less than they make in advertising
Paradigm^
02-04-2005, 10:29 PM
This is amazing.
What would happen if we all used our space, and used all our invites too - and then those people used all their space, too?
I think this has gotten beyond being a service to the community and become plain showing off :p

Think about it. Not many people use more than 50mb of email space, most use under 10mb so they don't need as much hard disk space as you would think.
I am still wondering why you still need an invite to open an account, everybody can ask for an invite from from someone in a chat room or forum, I have given out hundreds so I think now that they should open it up to more people.
p.s. if anybody still needs an invite send me an email to gmailplease@a-sharpe.co.uk

Instead of saying, here's our email service please sign up, they've made it exclusive-however it is very very easy to find an invite. It makes people want an account rather than just think about getting an account, while still having availability.

true, it does still keep a clean server. if you want it you'll use it, if you get it just for the sake of it you're just clogging up their server.. it saves them money from advertising too. many companies are doing viral advertising campaigns now.. BMW and VW have
i doubt it will get released for 'public sign up' but the e-client itself may get released from beta when it's polished.
