It has come to my attention that some of you have not read the FAQs too well and are unfamiliar with the sig rules about being under 15kb in total.

I urge you to check your sigs now.
Anyone spotted in here with a huge pic etc in their sig will have their custom stuff deleted (avatars, sigs etc) and will be thrown into the public lion pit.

This will happen without further warning.

Your a well respected member, and you go round behind many a members back, because lets face not all the members can get in here, saying that there sigs are too big or what ever and letting cheechy go through and just remove them and change their title and what not. This was about JNCs having huge sigs, but the "grassing" was handy actually.
Now it's turning (again) argument.
Helpful pointing out of big sigs keeps our workload small...
I don't see it as grassing because the rules are clear.
a 60 kb sig needs to be pointed out.
It keeps you occupied and we get a cleaner forum. :)

I do believe this is true. Rather than being downloaded individually, the first instance of the image is downloaded, while all other iterations are rendered "on-the-fly".

Therefore, one could have twenty thousand of those images in their sig, but the total sig size would only amount to one instance of the image. Plus, everyone else'd be pissed off because their eyes would start to bleed.

It's ok, spoon, the Signature Police get it wrong sometimes too :D

Look, you twats, if it's text then it really doesn't matter that much provided it doesn't actually physically stretch the page. Text doesn't take years to load.

Provided you don't try and write a novel in your sig, if a little text is wider than the pixel width thing it won't exactly cause the people on 56k to melt down.

That's the point of the limit; not to cause us all to perfectly choreograph our sigs, but to stop 56k people exploding in a cloud of modem-based electro dust.

Personally I PM people with sigs that are too big, what is the appeal of grassing them. Maybe you should after you PM and they don't do anything, but you're just creating jobs for the admins to do.

I think by creating this thread and allowing people to grass here has created the problem.

I mean, beforehand, nobody [not even Garry2 :p] was going to PM an admin just to point out a sig that's too big. But by creating the opportunity to do so with little effort - eg in this thread - the appeal to 'grass' becomes too much, especially when many of the non-JNC peoples will never know that they were grassed up.

To be fair, the sig thread is a sticky in the general forum - the most popular forum [excluding the bin of cheese :p] - and so anyone still defying the rules probably deserves what's coming to them.

Think it's time to call the "sig police" a day, many of the offenders have been caught, and it can be a warning to the rest.:)

It's not about rules being adhered to, I think if people break the sig rules then they should be asked to reduce it then deleted if they ignore the friendly warning. How many people read all the FAQ's? (how many of you read a license agreement before clicking yes or read a manual before playing around with something?).

Does the system stop you from using a large sig like the avatar system does? No. Therefore you will get people accidentally using the wrong size.

Anyway, my ranty pants isn't about that. It's about a privileged forum being used for nothing else at the moment than to grass up other people behind their backs. If there's nothing wrong with what you are doing then start a similar thread in General Pap and mention we've been doing it in the JNC already. that should be 'fun'.

Oh and deleting my sig (which didn't break the rules and was only 7k) just because I didn't agree with you is childish and proves how wrong this thread is. As a mod you should be above such things.

I urge you to go back to page one and go through some of the reported sigs.
People with 15.01kb sigs have been left untouched. :)

Its more the people with the larger sigs that we're after. You'll find many reported ones left untouched, and thats not because I have missed the post.

as has been said, the banned people don't get a warning pm, so why should people breaking sig rules? they've had over 2 years with the faqs and 1 year with the stickied thread to change their sigs, why should we give them and extra 2 hours?

Well I've had a looksy around the interweb thing and controlling sig sizes is a massive problem. Almost every major forum and a lot of little crap ones too have FAQ's and regular reminders but it still happens.

So you can PM, punish or publically humilate but it will still happen it seems, unless the JNC'ers fancy grassing up full time and become mini-mods?

The obvious thing is someone needs to come up with some code to check sig sizes, find a way to imbed it into the forum, patent it (as long as the software patent law thingy goes ahead) and then make a fortune! Easy!

Yeah but the problem with sigs is you can link to an image on the web which can be any size and I don't think there is a way (currently) for the forum to check this size and reject it. Don't quote me on this coz I don't know much about the inner sanctum workings of a forum.

There are ways in PHP to get the filesize of a remote file (see top comment at filesize() (http://uk.php.net/filesize) page of php.net). Maybe Ash could write a script that looks for all the image URLs in a sig and makes sure they total under 15kb.

This means you should of been around for a while.

The short version is - you guys should know better and be setting an example to others. There's no bans involved here. If anyone wanted to apologise they may even be able to get back in, otherwise they will have to earn the rep level to auto get back in.

The level to get in was raised a while back though, so some may not have enough.

Wow... I'm not sure what to think about this all... I'm just glad my sig wasn't affected.

I'm admin at one other board, and a mod at another. We don't have sig size problems, but if it was happening at my boards, I would probably afford them a warning first. But in my mind, once you've shown me that you don't care about the rules of a board, then anything else you do is dealt with immediately. For instance, if I've had to warn you for your sig size, then I find your avatar is too big, then your avatar is gone, no questions asked. Because in the warning I would be sure to tell them to read the rules or FAQ so they're well-versed. Any voilations hence would be dealt with presently.

On a side note... if the rep requirement was recently raised, then how did I end up in here? I only have 1043 rep. Can a mod or someone make you eligible or something? Because it was fairly recently that I realized this forum was available to me. Just curious.

But Patrick, no one has been able to tell me when it was raised. I only realized that I could get in here on March 26th, and when I read the check-in thread, people people were already talking about the limit having been raised. If the limit was raised before then, then how am I here? Someone mentioned in another that it may have been 500 when I hit 500, and it just took the mods forever to let me in. But then I read something in here that said people can automatically get in once they reach the entry point. So please excuse my confusion. I didn't mean to irritate anyone, I was just wondering since I'm hearing conflicting things.

Anyway, I don't want this to get off-topic, so please, do continue. If anyone has an explanation or anything else to say, please respond in the Jolly Nice Check-In thread or PM me. Sorry about the off-topicness.

In theory, you can't hotlink images from Geocities.

In practise you can.

Upload your normal jpeg or gif to geocities, go to the File Manager and rename image.jpg to image.txt , and this gets around the geocities-hotlinking-problem.

And also explains why it's a .txt file.
