View Full Version : A crushing blow for Ps2 by Gamespy...

Gamespy has made another "25" list, this time the "25 most overrated games in existance".

It has been a crushing blow.

FF7 came in at Number 10 (*sniff*), while MGS2 came in at... 2! (GAH!)

I am very dissapointed! Great games like that are not overrated! MGS2 was one of the best games ever! Same with FF7! It gave Square Enix a Surge of popularity with that game!!!

MGS2 makers, Konami, will be saddened by that decision!

I am quite angry now.

On another note, I think about 4 X Box games got on there, too.
The "Highly Anticipated" Halo came at about 12 or 15, with too many level repeats etc.

"Blinx- The Time Sweeper" came in at 7 (I think). Come on- it aws overrated. Ratchet and Clank 2 is coming out! YAAAAAY!

And the other 2 were, I think that Morrow Wind game.

Either way, they were some embarressing results.....

We, are Dishonoured!

MGS on the PS was, IMO, a better game than MGS2. I'm not sure why, I just felt more 'immersed' in MGS than MGS2.

And yes, I think Morrowind on the XBox was overrrated. I heard nothing but praise for that game -- I got bored in it fast. I almost took it back but my son plays the heck out of that game. I fall asleep if I watch him play it for any length of time. It didn't look 'stunning' to me (FF X was stunning, Panzer Dragoon Orta was close to stunning looks). Morrowind kindof looks like playing Everquest all by yourself, only slower.

Morrowind's great if you've never played an MMORPG. If you have played an MMORPG, you'll be running about Morrowind wondering where all the other players have hidden, and get extremely bored very fast with no one to talk to or play with.

Of course gamespy are going to slag off console games, they make 99.9% of their money from PC users who think 'OMG! Teh PS2 is gayzorz. i pwnz j00r cs'

FF7 is one of the top five games ever. most of the time I allow people to have an opinion, but this is one of those times when if your opinion of FF7 is bad, then you suck.

A lot of the PS2 games were simply converted to X-box/Gamecube

Which proves PS2 still rules the show!

This is definatley true. MGS1 was fantastic and I savoured it on the PS1. MGS2 pissed me off with all the 200 hours of cut scenes and 15 minutes of gameplay. I only finished it so as not to have totally wasted my money. They seemed to have rushed the last couple of levels and the final boss encounted was cack. A bloody sword fight!? The massive metal gear at the end of MGS1 was much harder to defeat. Also if I want a movie I'll buy a DVD. A video game is supposed to be fun and not something that you doze off in front of during a mammoth cut-scene at 2am. End of rant.

LOL I dozed off too during that mammoth cut-scene -- why is it timed to happen right when you have to get up for work in 6 hours?

at least the PC can anti-alias. Oh and if you stereotype like that, i'll stereotype about console gamers. Console gamers aren't real gamers but they prertend that they are. They think that their console is better than the PC because they suck at using a PC and don't know the power of a PC. They say how much more powerful the consoles, eg the PS2 are than a PC, if thats true why in the PC port of GTA3 and vice city, are the grpahics sharper, anti aliased, no jaggies, the sound is far better, YOU CAN ACTUALLY AIM WITH YOUR GUN. HOW'S YOUR PRECIOUS PS2 NOW? The PS2 is a piece of history, it's had its day and its day is over, get over it and buy the new console so you can be "cool" again.

the XBox can anti-alias.

as for the console-gamer stereotype - it falls in the same obtuse ignorance pit as any stereotype or prejudice.

I fit none of your stereotype.

I've been 'console gaming' since before the Atari 2600 -- I still own an Atari 2600, Colecovision, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Playstation 2, XBox. Sadly I don't have my Sega Master System or NES any longer.

I've been programming PCs since the early 1980s. I don't 'suck at using a PC' (I own 6), if I did I would be out of a job. Nor am I ignorant of how powerful PCs are - again if I were I'd be out of a job.

PCs have good games and crappy games, consoles have good games and crappy games. Some games are better suited to consoles, others are better suited to PCs. I'm a gamer - I play games I enjoy on the systems that they exist on, be it PC or console. It isn't the system that determines how good a game is, it's how much I enjoy the game that determines how good it is. The system just determines the availability of a game.

And I don't think the PS2 is quite history yet if it still outsells XBox and Game Cube.

i'm the only one who has a 3DO?... heh at least i didn't buy an Atari Jaguar...

my entire pre-teen life was dedicated to the Commodore 64... taking 10 mins to load a game... but... come on! it had the arcade version of PAC-MAN... it blew the atari version out of the water!

i use to love all games... didn't matter what it was played on... which was bad.. because i couldn't show restraint in buying a ps2, xbox, and gamecube... just recently i built a gaming computer to use for a small LAN group... my wallet keeps looking up at me like it was wondering what it did it me...

"you kept burning a hole in my pocket"

"oh", it said...

what was my point?... oh yeah... mgs2 sucks... but that because i don't like those kind of games... i admit that i rather enjoy older braindead games than these new overly 'too serious for a video game' thing they have out now... i loved ff7 when i firsted played it... but i can't see myself playing it again... i rather play ff1-6...

tetris is the game i have played the longest...

thooar... i still have some old eletronic hand helds... that my dad use to play... you know.. the ones with the little red light... some darker than others... those were great!

btw... what is gamespy?

Some PC games ask you if you want to install Gamespy when you are installing the game. I don't know too much about it but it sends me a daily newsletter by email that is linked to their webpage. It does have some interesting articles. You should be able to find the 25 most overrated games article here http://www.gamespy.com/articles/september03/25overrated/

Huh. PS2 is overrated. All of the PS2 gamers think GC is a "kiddy" console, PC is for "geeks playing RTS" and X-Box "crap games".

PS2 seems to be the new "trend". They cant be bothered to play on any other consoles, manily becuase there scared it will be beter than a PS2. GC is NOT a kiddy console, look at Eternal Darkness and Resi Evil (besides most games are ported onto GC as someone said). X-Box having crap games? Halo! Blinx! KOTOR! They have some great games! Pc for RTS's? Maybe PS2 gamers should look at the pitifuil AOE2 for PS2. Besides, PC has loads more vaiarety in games.

PS2 ITSELF is overrated! As are the games! Tomb Raider...jesus christ that was shite! And theres probally more but...

Anyway, PC IS the ultimate games machine, its just that not many people realize that, and those who do dont have a good enough PC.

What this has to do with overrated games is beyond me though...

Never did get a 3D0 nor a Jaguar, nor the later model Ataris. I still have a C64 up in the closet -but its vid chip is kinda burned out so its a dust-collecting lump now :(

Heh I remember those red LED handhelds - I had the Coleco football one, which was better than Mattel's. Coleco's had 4 running lanes, Mattel's only had 3. Also had the LED Space Invaders game which would freak out if you rolled over the score. And Merlin. And Simon, which wasn't an LED game but orginated in that era.

As for the PS2 being overrated -- a 3 year old console still outselling the competition is overrated? According to the sony catalog the overrated PS2 only has about 547 titles, 1764 titles if you count the PSone games. Sure there are a lot of crappy titles in there, but there are some gems as well. If the PS2 was overrated crap the market wouldn't continue to support the platform. Yet PS2 outsells the competition and 3rd party developers continue to develop games for it.

Were Sega's consoles crap? No - they each were great technologies for their time. What killed Sega was losing their momentum after the Genesis. The lack of titles in the Sega Saturn follow-on market for Sega was too small. More developers supported 3DO and PS platforms. When the Dreamcast came out it was too late - they lost their momentum in the PS vs. Saturn times and when the DC came out the PS2 was on already on the horizon. A small library of software and weak sales cost Sega too much - that's why Sega got out of the console business. The bulk of the gamers and developers alike waited on the PS2 release.

Ninetendo has a library of exclusive titles that people continue to buy. Despite the GC's weak sales (compared to GBA and PS2), Nintendo keeps the GC in the market and stays there carried by the Game Boy Advance sales (which generally exceed PS2 sales).

Microsoft's XBox is technologically superior to the PS2 (it is a year newer), but has a very weak library. It is still alive solely due to Microsoft's deep pockets. No other company could afford to lose as much money on their console as Microsoft still does. Microsoft is in the process of purchasing development companies to build their own library of exclusive titles - a proven market holding strategy of Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft has the money to hang in there long enough to not implode on a smaller customer base (e.g. Sega). Will they dominate? Time will tell.

Developers want to sell games and want to make money from sales, and the best way to make money from sales is to target the installed base of hardware. That's why some developers target multiple platforms - maximum coverage. And that's why some console titles show up on PC, and some PC titles migrate to consoles. The cash is in the numbers, and the numbers still put the PS2 on the top. And as long as the PS2 continues to dominate the market the 'PS2 is overrated' arguments have nothing to stand on.

It's all a matter of opinion.

How is this a "crushing blow" again?

Whoa whoa whoa. I never once said 'all pc gamers hate consoles' i said that there are some that do and they play CS all day and use gamespy. Me and each one of my friends who play games love the PS2 and PC. X-Box and GC are obviously good machines but they don't have quite the range of titles yet.

GC is mainly a kiddie machine, but it's to be expected, it's generally the way nintendo work. Kirby games are sickeningly kiddie, but they're still good games. Same with titles like Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Brothers Melee. Doesn't make it a bad machine at all.

As far as I can see the only really good games on X-Box are ports or multi-platform.

Why, whenever I open my mouth, do people think I'm mercilessly bitching at them? I'm just expressing opinions.

It's a "crushing blow" because MGS2 could have been so much better. It's almost embaressing... But I still like it. Could have been better....

And which one got number 1, you ask? Black and White. I played that, got it for 20 bucks. It was OKAY, but it was lacking depth, and you could only really do intelligent things with your creature, seeing that your culture was as dumb as a Dodo. Luckily, you could make them as dead as a Dodo.

Dead or Alive 3 was also there. Can't remember whcih number, though.

I remember reading an article in a PC mag that told the instructions to making a X Box. I still have it. My friend made one, and he still uses it. I would really like to play "Steel Battalion", or the "Mech Warrior Game". Heck, I'm even looking forward to Halo 2. I really want to play some of those games on X Box, even so, I'll still play my old favourites- The Armored Core Series, Socom U.S. Navy Seals, and the GTA games:).

It seems to be an all out console vs pc war in here... I have a PS2 and a PC, and I fully understand that the PC is much more powerful, and if a game that I want comes out on both of them, I will most likely get it on PC. The reason I have a PS2 are twofold.

1. So I can get good PS2 or console only games, such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (the BEST fottie game)

2. Sometimes even when a game is on both platforms, it was either badly ported onto the PC, or I just prefer the controller and easy interface of the PS2 (I'm lazy), such as MGS2.

I bought Vice City (amazing game) for the PS2, and I know that the PC version has better graphics and lots of little extras, like aiming manually in gunfights, but I was too impatient to wait, and found that I prefered the controller and interface with the PS2.
