I would personally say that Adobe Photoshop CS2 is the BEST editor on the block, (But also the most expensive with £528.99!) i do alot of pic editing anyway, So here I am with it. Pretty Revolutionary stuff indeed! It's possibilities are limitless.
Here is a website logo I designed for someone...
http://img286.echo.cx/img286/5056/CS2a.th.gif (http://img286.echo.cx/my.php?image=CS2a.gif)
This is another I did (In a rush)
http://img286.echo.cx/img286/8977/CS2b.th.gif (http://img286.echo.cx/my.php?image=CS2b.gif)
You can use many effects and options to your advantage, letting you get around those corners...
http://img286.echo.cx/img286/6944/CS2c.th.gif (http://img286.echo.cx/my.php?image=CS2c.gif)
You can get automatic effects with the Paintbrush tool, or do it yourself manually...
http://img286.echo.cx/img286/6026/CS2d.th.gif (http://img286.echo.cx/my.php?image=CS2d.gif)
While you're making your designs and yuor pictures, you can, of course, send things to the back or bring them to he front, as the program works with layers, which inturn means you can add seperate touch-ups.
http://img286.echo.cx/img286/2551/CS2e.th.gif (http://img286.echo.cx/my.php?image=CS2e.gif)
This prgram has many, many more features, which is ponited out in tutorials.
If you do alot of art desiging etc... Then this is the Program for you.
Although it DOES get a bit on the expensive side, I'll let you in on a secret anyway.
Goto www.ebay.co.uk andsearch for 'Adobe Phoshop CS2' There will probably be copys of it from £14.99 to £50+ Or if you wanna do it the official way, get it from adobe.com or whereever.
PS. My copy IS NOT ILLEGAL foor those who wonder. It is officially licensed by Adobe.
What is your favourite Picture Editing Software?

How does it compare to CS1? Because from what I've heard it's the same with a few animation things, and seeing as I'm actually paying for photoshop now since I'm doing design, I don't want to upgrade if it's the same :p

is this the first program out of the macromedia adobe stable? Or is it just the next version? Fireworks can do stuff that CS cant... and the other way round? id this the animating shniz you were talking about to?

I use trusty old PS7 and it'll take a lot of convincing for me to change. I'm also a designer and had to pay for it, my housemate has CS and apart from a couple of new filters etc I'm not too bothered about upgrading. And I use Flash MX for all my animated needs.

Well, there's not much to lose if you get it fot £15. It's definitely got more features and it's more user-friendly. It also has a few bitties that CS1 didn't have. Hope this clears things up for you!

Yeah, I'm using PS7, and don't really see what upgrades could've been made. I don't even know how to make PS animate, I just use Flash MX :)
Oooh Yeah

I never liked Adobe Photoshop, but maybe thats because I started off using Paintshop pro. I prefer Paintshop pro because to me it just seems to be simpler to use and the settings are easier to adjust.
But I guess I'm not with the majority here ;)

Photoshop is THE single best program ever developed, no question.
Until I can get my hands on CS2 (which will be in quite a while, as my dad isn't doing as much arty stuff as he used to at work, thus doesn't really need photoshop), CS is doin fine.

I prefer PS to Flash MX, mainly 'cause the CD key actually WORKED.

I used to use Photoshop 7.0 up until a few days ago when I got CS2 and I have to say, it isn't really all that much better, theres a few new features but I haven't really used them much.
CS2 also runs ALOT slower on my computer and I'm not really sure why as I have 736mb of RAM and plenty of space on my 180gig HD.
And I wouldn't say CS2 is that much better than 7.0 that it should take twice as long to load.
Offtopic: I can't wait for whatever macromedia and adobe are making, photoshop + fireworks = porn.
I hear that the next flash will have blurring aswell, I'm guessing this has something to do with adobe.
I didn't know you could animate in PhotoshopCS, unless I'm reading something wrong...

I like Fireworks but only for creating web graphics.
For photo editting Photoshop is clearly the king.
Sure they both edit images but I see them as two very different products with very different roles.

Since I have to spend my hard owned pennies, I opted for Paint Shop Pro, which is quite a bit cheaper. But since I can't use even that properly, I certainly wouldn't want to assert any type of claims for it.

I used CS2 and yes, I paid for it (though not as much as you quoted there :/)
It is a lot better than PS7 and CS1 in my opinion. I will admit I pirated all 3 at different times, after a while I decided that CS2 was infact worth purchasing and forked out for a legal liscence for. It didn't make any difference to the running of the program, I just felt bad stealing something so good and expertly programmed :p.

GIMP for teh win.
EDIT:
To avoid losing further rep points, I shall expand on my statement.
The GIMP is a worthy alternative to Photoshop, with a similar featureset. Of course, the major plus for it over PS is that it's free and open source.
Yes, some find its interface a little confusing, but you soon get used to using it.
So, for all those who want Photoshop, but can't afford it, give the GIMP a go.

I haven't really tried any of these. I have photoshop elements which I often use in conjunction with Flash to create stuff. MS paint sucks unless you're doing a real minimalist piece of work. I couldn't really vote as my experience with all others except those mentioned (and paintshop pro as I have used it briefly on another PC) is 0%. However of those I do use I can recommend them as good stuff. I also have the eyecandy add-on for my photoshop elements.

To test the waters of Photoshop, the Gimp does have a variant called GimpShop, the UI is much like Photoshop.

But im sure the more recent Photoshops are roughly a million times better
I use Adobe's Photoshop CS2. I love student discounts. ;)

FAO the last three posters in this thread: What part of "reviews" don't you understand? The point of this thread isn't "post which image editing program you use", you know...
