View Full Version : Autographs
Define what getting an autograph means?
Is it that important to have a bit of paper with a signature on it? or is it just the fact you can say you want to meet a celeb, or tell your friends your proof of meeting one.
I'm not against autographs, i just dont entirely understand them.
If i happened to see a celebrity walking down my street, i would want to say hello, but having their signature on a piece of paper wouldnt mean anything to me at all.
Of course this is just my opinion, Im sure it means alot to other people or the famous wouldnt bother giving them out.
I just wondered what your opinions were on this?

meh i dont have any autographs, but i touched jonny borrell and Dom from the others if that counts.
I dont have time for pieces of paper, there not worth the paper their written on.

I got Franz Ferdinand to sign my V Festival programme. That was kind of a souvenir of the event though. I think you have to be obsessive to care much in general.

I got Nick Hancock and Jon Culshaw's as they were at the same hotel as me in the summer
I got one autograph when i was ten. I was round at my friends house, and someone noticed hunter from Gladiators going into the house next door. So me and my friend went and knocked on the door and said (cringingly) "Is hunter here?"
The man said yes, and hunter came and wrote us an autograph that said "Liz, Be good - Hunter xxx" (i should have took that advice too)
But days later, it was the actual Story that was interesting, not the autograph (although not everyone was able to believe that he just popped next door)
Needless to say, i lost the autograph and didnt care one bit.

well, i don't see much point in the paper unless you're a collector, but if they autograph a poster or picture that's pretty cool a) becuase it looks good and you can boast b) it could sell for a lot of money depending on the celeb
I thought of selling for money, but i just dont trust buying autographed stuff. Even with a certificate of authentication from ebay!
And if you look on the Job Lot section of Ebay, you can usually find someone selling 20 CDs full of autographed pictures!
Of course this is just ebay. Im sure there are better ways.

I don't really see the point of autographs either, although if it's, as Shane said, a poster or something then the autograph can make it more personal or special.
Personally, I have a signed copy of China Mievelle's Iron Council, which I think is cool as he's my favourite author, but that's about it.

I have a baseball signed by Tino Martinez, and that's pretty cool (since he's one of my favorite players), but that's it.
Oh yeah, I got a hat autographed by Ricky Henderson, another baseball player.

I'm going to Florida on Thursday and one of my best friends wants me to get her some Disney autographs.
I'm really not looking forward to being hugged by a sweaty 40 year old man in a Mickey Mouse suit.

I don't see the point, apart from the fact it's proof you met them.
Awww, really? you dont want to be hugged by a 40 year old man who enjoys dressing in huge fluffy costumes and pretending to be happy all day?
so cruel.

i agree with shane that if its a poster or something like that then it can be kind of cool to have an autograph on it because it makes it more unique and you can show it off a little ;). I have a glassjaw poster that was signed by everyone in the band that i wouldnt have hung unless it was signed because it was boring otherwise. also, i have a playbill signed by john lithgow that made a good addition to my scrapbook and was more as a joke with one of my friends because she was in love with him (it was a little creepy).
what i dont get though is people who have themselves signed? like the crazy girls screaming "sign my boobs!" or whathaveyou... its just going to wash off so whats the point?

They're cool. Like when you meet someone you really admire, it's a reminder he noticed you and you talked to him. If I saw Kirk Hammett on the street I'd sure as hell ask him for an autograph and damn it I would frame it with reinforced glass. And then brag about it to everyone

I met Corey Taylor in Dublin, me and my friend went to him and asked for a photo, its way better than an autograph, although autograph's are nice, but kinda easy to grab a pen and just go up to someone and ask them to sign your whatever, like people who ge their boobs signed, then they must fear the shower!

I think autographs have developed with the rise of the culture of celebrity, and because we're such cynical bastards that we need proof that someone's met one of these social high fliers :p
yeah, i'd much rather have a picture on my mobile of me meeting someone. it would mean much more and its all the proof you need.
if i did see someone famous, i probably wouldnt dare go up to them at all though!

I've got various autographs. I've only ever had my picture taken with one person tho, MC Lars.
There isn't many interesting stories to my autographs. BUT - I did meet the bassist of Fony on the Train once. But no one's ever heard of them. I also got a autograph from ex-guitarist of Prodigy and Pitchshifter. He wasn't playing because he was "too drunk", so I shouted his name. And he signed stuff made out to "fat axe-wound" (only uncensored), like most of the signed stuff I have. Like Pin and Dan from SikTh, Dave from Engerica, so on.
I've also got a signed Slipknot single. PM me if you want it and I'll see what I can do.
I find it strange about the whole autograph thing too. If someone says to me "I met and HUGGED the bassist of Funeral For A Friend" then I'm pretty indifferent. If I told anyone I met one of the musicians for Auf Dur Meur, no one will know who the hell I'm on about (note - He's the one with a beard. He also asked me for a smoke (I don't) and told me he broke his SG. He was a nice chap).

I went to see Green Day in January and I have a signed vinyl cover that I got framed along with my ticket stub. Its a pretty cool reminder of a fantastic night and I have it proudly on display on my wall.
A photo would have been great but I have squillions of photos already, an autographed item is something a little bit different for me. Of course, if it was just a scrap of paper that was signed it wouldnt mean as much.
I also have Barbara Winsors autograph! She is so nice :)

I have Derren Brown, Kate Mulgrew and Brent Spiner. It's more of a collection of saying to people that I've met cause most people don't, however I would have LOVED to get a polaroid picture and get them to sign the bottom, that would be even more impressive than a signature, but I'm one of these people who writes in my diary to keep a memory of what happened and the autograph book (although lost in my bedroom somewhere along with £200 and a really priceless object which I've forgotten what it is as well) it gives you something to look back upon and say "I remember this.." and maybe give a cool story on how you got the autograph, where you met the celeb, etc. etc.
So mine are more of a reminder and memory jogger than anything else

And one on the back of my school blazer (Kele, went to my school, we had an interesting chat about some of the teachers etc. heh)

I guess autographs are kinda proof that you met the person. Though I have Robert Patrick's autograph on my Terminator 2 DVD because my sister was going to a convention where she knew he was going to be, so I got her to get the autograph for me. So maybe it's not proof after all.

rumbled. Am i that transparent? :)
i would be more jealous if it was anyone from Pavement though. Now there is some autographs i couldnt refuse.
