View Full Version : the dead shall walk the earth
taken from another forum I browse, this guy organised a rather special event:
About a week ago the first annual Zombie Walk was held on the streets of Vancouver. Basically it was a non-goon fauxtest, orchestrated only to confuse and cause a disturbance in the lives of everyone who witnessed it. It consisted of about 200-300 people dressed as zombies walking through the streets of Vancouver and meeting at a church located in a quiet community. From the church our collective army of the city’s undead began its trek towards our final destination, The Graveyard. Ignoring traffic laws and the police the journey took place on the heavily populated Main Street. Taking up roughly 3-4 blocks we slowly trudged along the sidewalks clawing at windows and moaning at the humans.

how cool would this be! I would ACTUALLY attend this, and on a good day I would go as far as saying I would organise a London event if there was enough interest.
Possibly.

But you're a zombie, get into character - you're already dead :D Though just saying that, I'm picturing a zombie actually washing someone's windows for them :D
Boyinabox
05-09-2005, 09:42 PM
I'd love to do that but to make it really effective you'd have to have people wearing bloodied clothes running and screaming telling people to run and save themselves, then a few minutes later the zombie hoard would arrive scarring the bejesus out of everyone.
I think I'm going to have to organise this for Halloween! :D

05-09-2005, 09:47 PM
A Halloween event, now THAT would be awesome. It'll be great to have the whole W&B set loose on a town for Halloween :D hehe. There's a few peeps at the BBC who are fantastic with makeup and design, I'm sure I can get a half eaten brain (I only need my left side I think, so the right can be nibbled upon) :)
This is just TOO AWESOME :) I even have now started practicing my moan (not that type of moan, sick, you're really REALLY sick you know that) :D
EDIT: After reading the ImprovEverywhere site I always wanted to start something like that, to bring fun back into people's lives. This would be a great one :)

yep i would definitely be informing the police and the government so they can come along and take action. I often tell Tony Blair when I am going to walk down the street, he really seems to love hearing about it.
I'm sure there would be a degree of leniency if we were to, for example, walk along part of the riverfront for 10-15 minutes? If anyone knows the legality of an event like this please feel free to jump in
And yes moovok, hallowe'en occured to me too as being quite aptly times to hold this event.

I think this is a rather brilliant idea and would be willing to travel all the way down to London for it. Somebody please organise this and I will love you forever. :)
This could be like a war re-enactment like what the yanks always do. An area is closed off, and people start firing blanks at the zombies while spectators watch. The zombies would always win, of course.
PS: If you can't go without zombies on a daily basis, read my post:clickety clickerson the third (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/showthread.php?p=953029#post953029)

O RLY?
05-09-2005, 11:47 PM
Yes, but from what I understood was that everyone would be roaming around streets in an uncontrolled environment. While civil war reenactments, are done on stages/closed spaces and people know about it.
But if there's a bunch of people looking and acting like zombies in the middle of the street people are going to freak out and do stupid stuff.
Not that I don't endorse this, I think it would be pretty cool :P

the space hijackers (http://www.spacehijackers.co.uk/html/welcome.html), who are responsible for the annual (though probably illegal since the 7th July Bombings) Circle Line Party, would probably be interested in helping to organize an event like this.
You should get in touch :p
they once did a thing where they had one set of people giving out flyers about escaped zoo animals and another set of people dressed up as said escaped zoo animals wandering around London. It all looks like their sort of thing.

I've just had an uber cool thought. Since i start Uni on Oct 1st, at London; Im sure there must be a Flash Mob group. And if there isnt, im sure it cant be too hard to start one up. This at least would give a base In London to start from. There are various unis round london and you know stundents have nothing better to do with their time.
My brothers into flash mobbing as well. He was involved in the pillow fight that happend err outside westminster or somewhere in London. I think it was around 200 people. So it cant be that hard to get 200 people.
This idea is just too cool to let go. Though what would the route be. Not really wanting to walk slowly down the street with London traffic ya'know!

I have a constant fear that zombies are going to attack. If I was unlucky enough to be at a zombie walk without being warned before-hand, I would most likely go mad, run home, gather provisions (crisps and cola), and hide out in the attic weeping for my dear loved ones that have probably been eaten.
So what are we waiting for?

I think it'd be nice to have a loose plot for the whole thing - nothing too complicated, of course.
Perhaps starting with a few zombies coming out from a graveyard and simply having more join them as times goes on to give the effect of people getting infected.
We could also have some people running away from them who later became infected.
Of course, it would be nice to have a small group of "survivors" barricading a building of some sort, which the zombies then surround.
Though I may be making it a little too complicated.
Just a couple of ideas anywho.

I personally think it would be funny if the police knew nothing about it. Imagine the reaction of people not in on the secret when armed police show up.
A few ideas.
Maybe we could get people to not go as zombies and act like there getting eaten.
Where would we all meet pre-march? If we are all just sitting there ready it will be more bizarre than scary.
Am I missing the point?
If and when it goes ahead I definetly try to get there.

Carm down everyone I'm back.
I think that it should be next year so we can plan lots and still have time to spare. We could go in groups around small towns practising our technique. I imagine it will take a lot of time to learn how to apply the face stuff properly.
Also we all need to co-ordinate on the clothes we wear. We can't all go as farmers and goths you know. Resident Evil 4 is out on PS2 this Christmas so that will probabily help the less 'talented' of us. And finally we need to make sure nobody else steals it. Some dickheads will probabily claim it was there idea. Either that or some random company will say it was there publicity stunt.
EDIT: Yes I know they aren't specificly zombies in RE4 but its close enough
ok
to be fair, this is still in the very early stages.
making websites, planning phonecalls to who knows what is all very nice, but it is misguided energy.
For now, all I am asking is that you show your support of this, or lack of, and keep your eyes peeled for further developments.

I think it should be October 31st. Meet in Hyde Park and then walk down Oxford Street near night time moaning and groaning in make up. We could have a makeup stall helping people who have just come down and not time to dress up yet there, fake blood, the works. Then walk. Oxford Street I think would be great at night. Not sure about day, probably Hyde Park, but I'm thinking of a night thing.
You could get people to "phone" up Radio Stations not saying "oh, some guys from the net are doing this" but instead frightened and saying "my god, zombies are coming down Oxford Street". I also picture a zombie going into Virgin Megastores and listening to some music whilst groaning :D
I leave the post for a day, and look what happens.
1. A good reference to how to act like a zombie can be found on the RE: Apocalypse dvd, it has a rather intelligently thought up 'liquid zombie' technique.
2. Oatmeal, homeade blood, food colouring, and homeade gauze will suffice for fixing up the zombies.
3. You'll be carted away to jail if you don't notify anyone bout this, even if you dont get shot.
4. It order to keep some moron from going after, how 'bout you involve the crowd, they can throw water ballons, and a hit from the waste up counts as a kill. Of course this might seem a bit lame, the crazies ARE out there
5. Blood packets won't work, as zombies dont bleed, and good ones are expensive to even make yourself.
6. If you love zombies so much, READ MY DAMN POST. You'll enjoy it, I swear.

Not if we decide to be Stage 3 Zombies. Stage 1 is just a bit of fake blood and some foundation (night of the living dead). Stage 2 is when you get discolouration of the skin (grey/green) some mild decomposition and the bodies are more torn up from wear and tear (Dawn of the Dead). Stage 3 is Day of the Dead, decomposing, advancing intellectual capacity, but a body that pretty much drips. Pus, rotting skin, blood everywhere. Those are the good ones. Of course once I've seen Land of the Dead I'll espouse the virtues of stage 4 zombies, but oh well.

I'd love to be involved in something like this, though living 12,000 miles away doesn't help. Then again....I have been thinking of using my 4 month break before uni to take a holiday back in England, I'm sure it could co-incide with the date this is on (as long as it's no earlier than December, otherwise I'll have to be happy with pics). Sadly I have no make-up skills whatsoever, I imagine I'd have to settle with a bit of green stuff, preferably multiple layers so that one layer could slowly peel off.
Of course once I've seen Land of the Dead I'll espouse the virtues of stage 4 zombies, but oh well.

I would really really love to come to something like this. At least if i dont, i will feel left out and like ive missed something really good.
But I live about a 3 - 4 hour drive away, and its not so much of a problem driving on my own, its the fact that london is so big, and the thought of getting lost (or even worse, driving into the paid area by accident) scares me alot. Important details are very important, a definite thing to do is tell the polie beforehand, you don't want the only people with guns there to not know and get yourselves shot, you should inform people that it isn't real either, otherwise they may start looting, ot get inventive with weapons, maybe the person at the front should carry a sign so people don't panic.

Hrm. Perhaps this would be TOO safe. I mean, lets live on the edge a bit, and give some credit to the population of London. They're not ALL psychos who'll start shooting or beating up a load of badly made up zombie types walking down a street.
And I’m going to go out on a limb and say people involved wont improvise weapons either... At least I hope people know where the line is... :)
Maybe we should make this a charity event? Get sponsored or something, so it isn’t so utterly pointless (although fun) and it might give the police/radio/papers a reason to give us some lenience/attention

Isn't Vancouver located in the USA? Because I'd expect at least twenty people to run out of their house with a shotgun and start shooting the crowd..

Yay for stereotypical comments about Americans... and a complete lack of geographical knowledge \o/
I had another idea, based on the charity event thing I said; what if we got companies involved too, on another kind of sponsorship idea. They pay £X per zombie attending.
I'd also like to shoot my idea down in flames, as well as the whole thing really. If you look at it literally, will anybody really be interested in protecting the safety, or paying money for, a load of teenagers/men/women to walk through London in silly costumes and make-up?
I'm beginning to fear not.
moog, do you have any more info on the Vancouver one? If there was any purpose to it, was it organised officially, or was it just because they were bored one day?

Jeez people talking about sponsership and companies. That would totally ruin the point and seemingly spontaneous attack of zombies if theres police and news reporters around. Hell it might go too far and they'd treat it like a protest and cordon off roads n shit to walk down. Then itd look very very stupid.
Id see no reason to inform anyone. Id just make sure you have enough support, set a date and time and off you go.

It would take me like four hours to get there by car, and I can't drive, so I have a small problem. And yes car pooling would be a good idea, but how do we know if we can trust the person that is giving us the lift?
Train seems to be my best choice. Thats if it goes ahead.

Woo!
We are Zombies
(To the tune of “Mr. Sandman”)
(Scat) brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains.
Brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains,
We are zombies, and we’re here to say:
We’re going marching and we won’t go away,
It’s kinda lonely just under the ground,
We’re getting up and walking around!
With zombies, you’re never alone,
(We’re also handy around the home)
Please just let us march and be -
And come to our jubilee!
Brains, etc.
We are zombies, and we’re here to stay,
We need some surface time to come and to play,
We want to soc(ia)lise, just like you –
Is that too much to ask to do?
Zombies, help out our cause,
You need to join us now, without any pause,
Come with us and celebrate –
We are undead, and it feels great!
Brains, etc.
So we’re saying, (braaaains?) just one last time,
We’re coming marching now while the weather is fine,
Hell is full up to overflowing,
And so we’re coming out and we're bowling!
It’s OK, we’re going home,
When our day out is over and done,
But as you brought us all so much cheer –
We’ll do it every,
Ev – e – ry,
We will do it – ev – er – y year!
Brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, brains, braaaains.

I do have a life, I'm a programmer for a major company, I generally work on things I'd rather not be from 6am - 1am, giving me about 2 hours to work on other things (IE the website) before I get 3 hours sleep to restart the cycle. I made a website, everyone looked and we decided to improve certain things, add certain things... so I've started again because it's easier that way. So no sorry, I am rather stressed with work at the moment, in the 3 days since you last asked, I've not finished it, thankyou.
hey guys try not to be too impatient and give tim a break, the site will be worth the wait believe me. Tim's working his ass off either him or moog will post the developments so keep your hair on....

It's not Tim's fault at all. He presented the website to the board of directors, at which point they decided it would be best to hold a brainstorm for what the webby should be after it had actually been made. It then turned out, to Tim's dismay, the website produced was none of those things. Just a break down in communication between the heirachical layers of the multi-national conglomerate that is 'No Room In Hell PLC'

And Me!
Yep. I was thinking we could make national news instead of regional if we did this thing in two or three cities at the same time? Let's say, London, Birmingham and Manchester? Also if we organised friends and friends of friends it would be on as frikken awesome scale! (maybe even internaitional news if we bring London to a grinding halt?)
Also, the further ahead we plan this, the more likely it is that word will spread and it will end up looking more like a parade, with people standing on the side of the road cheering...not to mention parents dressing thier kids up like zombies so they can join in...and poorly costumed chavs trying to join in...
reeeeally don't mean to tread on toes here, just ideas...

Why not do it in Brighton in November on the weekend of the comic expo 19th & 20th. Brighton has huge press coverage for all its events plus it will have plenty of volunteers already going to the expo to join in!

Another date I just found could be good and it is Birmingham 11th & 12th when George A Romero is attending the Winter show at the NEC. More details can be found at www.memorabilia.co.uk

Well I think, a) London is the capital and is such a more "high profile" area for the even to take place in
b) we don't want volunteers that have no idea of the "game plan" as it were.
Then again it is up to moog and co.
McFrenzy
21-09-2005, 04:34 PM
Well I guess a) sorry for offering and b) to be nice to all the others I will offer some helpful advice. Just so that nobody does this without the proper paperwork and ends up with a truncheon in thier ass womb and being locked up by Met officers who will enjoy thier job a little too much!
When filming in the capital I have some contacts who deal with all the hassles of liason between police and health and safety.
To liase with police yourselves will result in a NO at every turn due to security problems particularly with recent bombings the vision of hundreds of blood covered individuals walking about will and could cause panic.
Even if you do not film your event please contact these people
In some cases an insurance ploicy has to be taken out this costs somewhere between 1500 - 5000 quid and has to be paid up front.
The contacts I have given at the bottom of this post would I assure you give you correct advice on staging anything in the public arena of London.
You may also face along with insurance costs policing costs (not cheap) which is often why film production takes place outside of London.
