Here is an odd thread. Here is the poem Jabberwocky:
"
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"
My question then is, based upon the poem, what do you think the:
a) Jabbawocky
b) Jubjub bird
and
c) The Bandersnatch
look like.
Pictures welcomed from you artists out there.
EDIT: Here's a picture I found of the jabberwocky itself.

Surely this should be in HOCAS?

I have that same book, the picture's the same at least. It's by the guy who wrote "Alice in Wonderland" isn't it?
Nonsense poetry is really good though, if you liked that you should try some of Mervyn Peake's stuff.
Edit: I'd presume the bandersnatch is some sort of dog. (From final fantasy, yes :p )
i've always pictured the jub jub bird as the neopet i had when I was 7 of the same name.
I believe it was blue and fuzzy and did not in any way resemble a bird.
I love that picture. I've been mesmerized by it since the age of four. Jabberwock is a great poem.

Had to link to this since it's what I always think of when I hear that poem now, and it always makes me laugh.
8-Bit Theatre for the win.

Same.
I find myself wondering, however, why is the Jabberwock in the picture wearing what appears to be a waistcoat?
The jubjub bird is umbrella-shaped, and black all over. It's thoroughly miserable. When people sit beneath it in the rain, it folds down and kills them.
The bandersnatch is a skinny, striped creature that steals from your pockets.
And the Jabberwock is a plump dragon-ish thing.
Beware the judderman my dear, when the moon is fat..

I remember when I first heard that poem some years ago I imagined the jabberwock as a badger.
As for the jubjub bird, I imagine a sort of skinny ostrich with a long beak like a heron or something. The bandersnatch I just see as a brown wolf (blame FFVII for that one).

My mom (an English teacher) can, and will, recite that from memory.

I once re-wrote Jabberwocky with political overtones
'twas rumours from the slimy toad
did wire and mumble through airwaves
all flimsy was the evidence
yet the toad's wrath outflamed
beware the murmurdoch my son!
the scoop that bites; the story's cash.
Beware the hubbub heard and shun
the immigrant job snatch
he took his writing pad in hand
long time the ministers he sought
so rest'd his feet, on downing street
and stood a while in thought
and as in plaintive thought he stood
the slimy toad, with eyes of flame
came striding down the street of fame
and chose gov'ment again
one two! one two! and then a speech
the camera flash went snicker-snack
they left him fed, and had his head
emblazened on the rag
and hast thou chos'n the government?
come to my arms, my beamish hack
and in five years, or so't appears
we'll have the Tories back.
'twas rumours from the slimy toad
did wire and mumble through airwaves
all flimsy was the evidence
yet the toad's wrath outflamed
In case anyone's interested :ninja:

The Jabberwock is a fat, bulgy, massive demon type thing, the Jub Jub bird looks much like a giant Emu, and a bandersnatch is a half spider / half dragon thing.

Haha, Terry Gilliam used that same Jabberwocky picture in the film, Jabberwocky (with Michael Palin and Terry Jones etc).

I always saw the jubjub bird as fat and purple. Always! My image of the bandersnatch is unfortunately marred by resident evil code veronica (was it?)
The jabberwocky is never seen.

Yes, I can see how that image may be marring. I wish these games developers wouldn't steal good names for creatures.
Make up your own you lazy bastards!
I always imagined the bandersnatch as a tunneling creature that would rise out of the ground and "snatch" banders. Banders are medium sized green lizard creatures.
Does that make me odd?

Oh, I do.
Did you know they're making a Flanimals movie? A cartoon apparently.
I tried to develop a hypothetical ecosystem based around the jabberwocky animals.
What?
It's normal.
I was bored!
This is proof that poets will make up words in order to make themselves sound more intelligent than you. I practice this frequently, and am rarely caught by my English teacher.
I always thought of the Jabberwock as a lizard-like creature.
