View Full Version : 10 dollar day.
After thinking about how much money I usually spend in one day, I realized it's a lot more then I would've expected. So I decided some time soon, I'm going to see how fun a day I can have on just 10 dollars. (I can't do it now, as I'm working nights, and the cab costs $10 alone, and my bike's out of service. Hopefully next week I'll have a day off to do it.) So then I thought hey, I'm a big loser who spends too much time on the internet anyways, so why not try and make it a forum thing? So here we are.
The idea is the have the best day you can for $10. (It converts to about 5 pounds, but I don't know how things are priced overthere so I don't know if you can do it on 5.) Include friends on it to cut costs and have more fun.
Things that count are food (if it's stuff from the kitchen, approximate, picnicings probally the best idea. Making it more to what was spent on that day. Buy together and split the cost.) transportation (like bus fare, if you drive or get someone to drive you, approximate the gas you use then price it. If you drive with friends who are doing it, it's split. Again, to make it a bit more close on what was actually spent.) entertainment (if you do it with others, you split it, like renting a movie.)
Things that would be too hard to even guess at (electricity) and things you already have, except food (games, movies) don't count.
Money you find is free money and you can use as much of it as you can. You can't however "find" your own money, or "find" money from people you know.
Point prizes to those who get the cheapest day, the most exciting day and the day that you can hardly believe cost that little.

I went for a walk across a suspension bridge over a gorge and then through a fancy village with my beautiflu girlfriend and it cost me £2 in bus fair. That was all.
It was great because:
It was a lovely sunny day
I was with my girlfriend
She is beautiful
It was the first day-off together for a month
You could see most of my city from that bridge
The village we wandered through after was lovely
So there. :trex:

Meh. Im broke. I have literally no money left whatsoever, and wont for the next two weeks.
You try not spending money for 2 weeks!!!
Still, its quite easy to have fun. We go down to the park LOADS, play frisbee, football. Sit at my friends house and watch cartoons and eat takeout pizza (which i somehow never pay for :ninja:
Its really not that hard to get around paying for things. That and it keeps me out of the pub. Which is probably a good thing for the time being.
Its a good idea though. Save your money for the important things in life...
Beer. :D

I can do it if I don't have to buy any cigarettes (yes, I know I never HAVE to buy them). In fact I normally do. Most days all I do is hang around in the cafe drinking coffee and having a chat with my friends there. If I didn't have fags at the beginning of the day though, I'd be fucked

I'm curbing my spending to a point that I have the cash of £1 per day per food for dinner (the rest we get from shopping which is about £30 a week instead of the normal £70 for the entire household). Being the only MAN in the house has its drawbacks :(

£12.09 for me. Bah.
I'm thinking rent shouldn't count for this, since bills don't.
I'm thirteen.
I get fed and clothed by my parents.
I have a bus pass.
I don't have to spend any money at all most days.

I don't know what $10 is in Australian currency, but I usually only spend under $10 Australian.
My local town centre yields at least 3-5 hours worth of fun, so entertainment shouldn't be a concern (that said, a local cinema charges only $5 entry). This leaves travel and food to be dealt with. Day trip bus tickets are only about $2.60, although I prefer to buy 10-use bus tickets for around $12 which last about a week and a half. As for food, after 3 years wandering around town I've pretty much explored every nook and cranny of the city, and so I know where to get the cheapest and best food. I can usually feed myself for the whole day on $3-6.
e.g Yesterday:
Bus ticket: Free (pre-paid Metro 10)
Bottle of coke: 85c
3 games of Air Hockey: $2
Quater chicken and chips: $2
Milkshake and Donuts: Free (friend works there)
Total: $4.85 \o/
Oooh Yeah

well i have a bus pass luckily, which did admittedly cost £50, but i wont count that for today, normally a return would be £1 on the cheap bus (for me) or about £4 on the clean bus (not for me)
for £2 in marks and spencers you can get a reasonably large pot of english strawberries, they even print what county they are from and which farmer, i like the kent ones most.. they tend to be not overly sweet, and then for £1 you can get a pot of channel island cream, so that's £3 gone.
with the change you could buy a newspaper of your choice, perhaps the new smaller but more colourful and debateably more interesting guardian, or the big issue or whatever you choose, this can be helpful for something interesting to talk about.. a catalyst if you will to get the conversation going
take that along to your park with a friend of your choice, perhaps a lady friend *rubs knees* enjoy the remainder of your weekend with a smile.
while it might seem a bit snobby to be in the park with expensive cream and strawberry the ladies like it when you spoil them, even if it's all you can afford.

If I do what I normally do on weekends I can get through without spending a penny, or using any currency (I'm sorry, it had to be done).
No, my day usually comes to around 30p as I tend not to eat breakfast, my lunch is paid for by 'rents and my dinner is bought using their money also.
Do I win?
People buying you stuff also counts.
