Guild wars.
In my opinion, Its better then WoW, and theres no monthly fee, so you cant go wrong.

I'd have to say two.
Anarchy Online: Because it's set in a Cyberpunkish Sci-Fi world and is very original, it's quite hard to get into when you need to plan out what implants (upgrades) to use in order to equip a certain weapon or armor, (this can take hours and really makes you think). The graphics are outdated, but the engine is being upgraded shortly so they should get better, there are 3 expansion packs out already, and another scheduled for Xmas. It's free to play if you dont register any expansion packs.
Also the PvP is interesting, but could be improved (which is what the new expansion is geared around).
World of Warcraft: Has nice graphics, I can run it on max resolution, full effects and have zero lag, the game and all the races have a detailed backstory, the quests are good, the PvP set up is OK, the only bad thing I have discovered is whenever the servers go down, mine is always the last to come back online, but I dont have to que to log on, which I hear is a problem on some servers.
Also played FFXI, Matrix online, Guildwars, Starwars Galaxies, City of Hero's, EVE, Lineage2.

I've only ever played one and I love it so:
FFXI.
Just for the plot and my linkshell.

Everquest 2.
Best one out there by miles and miles. As long as you like the fantasy genre that is.

Guild wars, because the graphics are sweet and it plays well on almost any computer. The Storyline is very rich.

World of Warcraft and Guild Wars are tied in my opinion.
WoW is more fun to play (in my opinion), but the sweet sweet taste of not paying anything per month gives GW like a billion points, and it's a great game itself.

If it counts, Planetside
It's a MMOFPS really but there are still some rpg elements (only have a certain number of points to spend on certifications for what weapons,a rmours and vehicles you can use.
Awesome game, love the teamplay elements of it

Best I've played yet is WoW, some people say it is overrated but it's really just a very good, involving game with a lot of detail.
I've yet to find an MMORPG with a real use for online players other than grouping for quests/PvP, I'd love to find one that is directly effected by the players and is constantly added to in every area. Second Life is an example but it doesn't have the quest/story side of things.
I'd also like to try planetside, is there any way to try it out? How much is it?

The best MMORPG imo has to be World of warcraft, as the communty side (on some servers :o) to the game is so good. I've just hit 58, and started raiding (groups of 6-40 people) instances, and that is alots of fun, and you meet new and telented player alot easier for future raids. The game is VERY addictive, so when the servers go down, it hurts ):
And my only fault with world of warcraft, is the servers, as they are either laggy (not ALL the time), or down. Mostly because Blizzard Europe suck.

But don't you find it annoying haveing to pay monthly?
What is with RuneSpace members, they pay so much a month for a game they give up after 2 weeks, but keep paying, when they can have a really good game like NWN really cheap?

No, because it's one of the best games in existance because they can afford to keep making it better. Runescape however is shit and always has been and only charge a monthly fee because they're so in debt from letting 12 year olds play for free for so long.
It's also nice to know that you're contributing money that supports the game that you are so involved in.

Not that you know where the money is going too though ¬_¬
Probally to buy more coffee machines so they have an excuse to unplug the servers again

I wouldn't mind paying £5 a month, but I find that £8 - £10 is a bit much, especially with so many people paying.
Also, I think that Guild Wars is going to have an expansion pack every so often, instead of a monthly fee, which I don' think is a bad idea, as along as they aren't the price of a brand new game, ie, £30.

FFXI - The on,y MMORPG i've played that has truly captured the essance of free roaming adventuring. The graphics are great, the plots awesome, the races are interesting, the leveling system is much better than games like SWG, because it forces you to group, thus improving the community side of the game. Also, the opening movie is LOVELY. We all know how good Square are with cut-scenes.
The feel of the game is great. Unlike most MMORPG's, you're not FORCED to combat. I know all MMORPG's have non-combat jobs, but FFXI is a cut above. On FFXI, you could be like me for example. My FFXI routine starts as Bastok, where I check my market items. I then grab my armour and sword and head off to the nearest mines, with a few lots of pickaxes. I spend a while digging up ores, usually untill I find a darksteel ore (one of the most valuable metals in FFXI), then head back. I smelt all my ores into ingots, and stack em up in my residencial house for safekeeping. I then go and do a few early levels of Goldsmithing, before finishing with an hour of smelting goblin helms for more lovely darksteel (sometimes). I then set up my shop full of darksteel ores and ingots, and sod off. A days pure fun, with no combat at all. Tis what I love about FFXI, as the next day, I could be just as easily partying with my paladin smiting all I see! :)
I'm currently playing the Matrix Online. It's alright...I won't comment though because Sony have just bought it, so i'll give them time to fix it up.

BTW the new Free Allegiance is free.
That's why it's called Free Allegiance.
Basically, microsoft made a buggy MMO game requiring subscription, and cancelled it, but the fans who became known as the Free Allegiance Organisation protested, and eventually the source code was released, so the FAO bugfixed it and then removed monthly subscription. WIN. I am currently waiting for my validation email to arrive.

I like WoW a lot more than guild wars, but other than those two i haven't played any other mmporg. WoW is addictive, the graphics are pretty good, downside is payment. guild wars has pretty good graphics but when i tried it it wasn't as addictive as WoW.

I would say my favourite so far and I have to admit I have not played World of Warcraft even though it looks superb, is Never Winters Nights.
Good graphics and a lot of scope for players to build there own worlds. Free roaming ability always a plus for me although it does depend on the realm you choose for size etc.
A lot of playerbility and of course it goes without saying fairly addictive, helped along by over 1 million player community so it is always building forward. Regular add-ons and bug fixes so you don't go on forever suffering age old probs.
Worth a look imho
Guild Wars. God I love this game. Rich, detailed story, great voice acting. Damn good graphics, and a company who cares for it's customers. ANet actually listen to the community and release brilliant updates regularly. Honestly, you can't go wrong for thirty quid. Brilliant value for money.
WoW Because i have a lvl 20 Night elf rogue who kicks ass.

^Truth.
The minor updates are free - they just released a whole new area of the map, with quests and stuff. Dunno about major ones - one is due later this year, so we'll see. Also, if you get yourself with a decent guild (as I have - go fUNK), then you will always have people to quest with, kick around with. And because of the way it's set up, you don't get things like kill stealing, or spawn camping - though there are still some griefers, they are easier to spot...

With Guildwars firstly what format is it on?
Secondly if it is for a pc can players build there own mods?
It's PC, it's not a moddable game, it's an MMORPG...Although it does have a storyline.

Ah, no you can't, basically it's a very large world with citys etc, you play with everyone at the same time...However you only see other people in cities and dungeon areas, you only see your party when out in the "world" (this is called an instanced mmorpg, WoW is the other way round in that you see everyone when in the world, but only your party when in a dungeon)

I'm about to go onto guild wars myself (once I can be arsed to buy it, and have some money). I'd go on WoW but it's damn expensive, and on guild wars I've a friend in a high place that's managed to rummage me some good weapons and equipment for when I get on and join his guild. W00t, free stuff!!!
[edit] I've also been warned not to go into the arena as a necro as everyone picks on them and that mesmers are the shittest proffesion ever.

WoW is fantastic but I am 100% serious when I say
"Be careful"
That game essentially destroyed my social life, I had a level 60 with rank 8 in PvP. To get there the game wasn't fun anymore, just grinding and such which is horrific. I now play occasionally on my alt on a RP server taking it slow and the game is so much more fun.

Has to be WWII Online. Being rereleased as Battleground Europe pretty soon. Graphics are not great, but it's the world's biggest constant gameworld.
One server, thousands of players, big battles, proper coordination, historically accurate equipment... add it all together and you get a nice big dollop of OMFGR0XX0RS!
