Whereas the play was to be presented from here a few hours in Tokyo Game Show, the Japanese magazine Famitsu takes the initiative and offers to us the first images of Metal Gear Solid 4 on Playstation 3. These visual enables us to discover a character with the growing old physique and the vestimentary style very near to Snake. Then simple blow of old man, return of a Revolver Ocelot Next-Gen way, or very an other character... it will still be necessary to have patience until Friday to know some more.
ahh google will you ever fail us... :)

There are also a few new devil may cry pictures, they don't really tell you anything about the game. Dante looks a lot uglier than I used to remember. Images here. (http://www.jeux-france.com/news12349_devil-may-cry-4-se-devoile.html)

My guess he's past his teen-20somethingish years and has become middle aged.
Oh and just yay generally for anything MG

No one could possibly like him.
I really hope MGS4 continues the story of MGS2. I really really want to know what happens. I was jumping around for the rest of the week when I first complete Sons of Liberty.
You see while the rest of you got annoyed by the bizzare and massive plot and cutscenes I loved it!

It's referred to in the series as Metal Gear Mark II. A miniature yet ferocious version of Rex, in the game they will be rampaging throughout a sprawling city in which the game takes place.
The real video footage is tomorrow and trust me, it's going to own

Those are some seriously kick ass graphics, may make me want to carry on with the MGS games. :)
Is the guy in the second picture Otacon? He seems to have aged quite a bit.
Alien O
15-09-2005, 04:34 PM
That is Otacon yes, I am quite the MGS fanboy and at a guess I would say that this occurs AT LEAST ten-fifteen years on from Metal Gear Solid 2 for various reasons:
A) Ocelot will be nearly dead so we will see what happens with Liquid
B) Kojima wants Olga's baby to be old enough to be a character. In MGS3 Ocelot was 16 and Olga said that her baby was taken away three years ago. Therefore if this time frame had occurred Olga's baby would be old enough to play a part.
C) Metal Gear Mark II, on average the development of Metal Gears has been a dozen years if not more, therefore to have Mark II a sufficient amount of time would have had to have passed.

These are all my opinions, not fact

I think the only chance we'll have of seeing raiden in this game is either a small cameo or another piss take. Kojima seems to laugh at him as much as everyone else does.

The E3 teaser certantly did take the mick out of him but I think that it did seem to indicate that he would be there in a big way. If not the main character.

According to EGM, Snake isn't that OAP there. He's got a full on beard, but is still around 40-50. Meryl's back, as is Naomi Hunter. Big Boss is also making a return as I see in some concept picture of him and his eye patch.
that guy there in the first picture is Big Boss, hence the eye mechanism.
But it's the wrong eye to be big boss....
The eyepatch is a device used to see better. There's even a close up during the vieo showing that it's called the "eye gear" or something.
The old guy is Solid Snake, accept it :D

Maybe, but Big Boss is referred to as 'Snake' in MGS3 - so you never know.
I agree that he looks a bit old - but on the second image there is someone who looks uncanilly like Otacon.
It was Big Boss' right eye which was shot out - not his left, which is covered. I think that's some kind of form of the Codec - a visual nanocommunication method rather than the voice one of before. That makes perfect sense - it could act as Snake's HUD, holding all info like the Soliton radar and the like.

I'm almost sure it's snake, I've watched the nine minute trailer and snake talks to the man in the picture and calls him Otacon. There are also some little things which need to be explained which were shown. I think the eyepatch maybe some sort of new technology instead of just an eyepatch. You can download a wobbly bad sound version of the trailer at the 1up website.

Team Koj is doing what it always does and keeping the aces close to their chest - they wont give much away as of yet.
Huge report on the trailer here - http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3143788&did=1
The 'eyepatch' is called the Solid Eye System - basically a HUD for Snake.
Otacon provides back-up in the form of a mini robot - probably the classic Metal Gear MkII, which looks strikingly similar to the new robot.
MGS4 site here - http://www.konami.jp/gs/kojima_pro/japanese/mgs4_04.html
Full title is: MGS4: Guns of the Patriots - so it's inevitable that it'll link with MGS2.

That's Snake.
See, what nobody seems to realise and what I'm sad to say that we will have to realise now is; Snake is *actually* really old. He's retired twice, ffs.
Not to mention, he's ageing faster anyway, due to the fact he's one of big boss's clones. I can't remember what liquid says in MGS2 (Through Ocelot's arm obviously), but it's something like "In a few years, you'll just be another ageing clone of the boss"

OHMYGOD that trailer is amazing. :D I think it's amazing how Kojima Productions do their trailers - always very clever.

I'm certain those two-legged machines are Metal Gears - remember, in the words of the Marine Commandant in MGS2:
"Every group, state and dotcom has it's own Metal Gear."
after Ocelot released REX's specs onto the black market.
It all ties up, see?
Hahaha - love the reference to the CELL processor.
I'm guessing this is set around 2025. Here's how I think so...
1964 - Operation Snake Eater (Big Boss around 30/40 yrs old) MGS3
1997 - Outer Heaven (Solid Snake around 20-25 yrs old) Metal Gear
1999 - Zanzibar Land (Solid Snake around 25-30 yrs old) Metal Gear 2
2010 - Shadow Moses (Solid Snake around 40-45 yrs old) MGS1
2012 - Tanker (Solid Snake around 45-50 yrs old) MGS2
2012/2013 - Big Shell (Solid Snake around 45-50 yrs old)MGS2
And as Snake looks around 60, that's 10 years on from Big Shell, and he's about 45-50 years old there, so he'll be around 55-60 in 2025. :D

However, if I remember rightly, the effects of FOXDIE are quite sudden - it simulates a heart attack. I don't think Snake could treat himself for it as he'd be too dead to do anything, imo.

His suit seems a bit Raiden-ish; all tight and made of rubber. It wasn't the best sight ever looking at Raiden in his crotch-hugging outfit.
Snake's getting older because Big Boss' DNA was taken from him when he was in his late fifties - and Snake'll get older much faster, 2-D.

Well if he and Otacon were working together, he could have been given the suit later. Looks like international use of the Metal Gears has made the world fall into crisis. Perhaps there was a treaty, like the Non Proliferation Treaty, that only the 'Big Five' can use Metal Gears, but some Middle Eastern country has created their own Metal Gears anyway, and the US was like NO DON'T DO THAT and invaded.

And I do think that it's set about 10-12 years after MGS2. It'll definitely follow the MGS2 storyline of the Patriots - and very probably Olga's child - and Raiden will definitely make an appearance, as suggested by the teaser posters.

It's a long one, get ready!
Snake is a clone of Big Boss - star of MGS3.
Big Boss was praised and said to be the ultimate in soldiers, so DNA was extracted from him and Big Boss was cloned thrice.
Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake were born.
Liquid Snake went on to join the SAS.
Solidus ran for office in the USA.
And Solid? He went covert...
What followed was Big Boss' turning from hero soldier to cruel mercenary, and he created a nuclear-equipped walking battle tank called Metal Gear. Unlike conventional nuclear weapons which had to fire from stable land, Metal Gear could fire from any terrain, making it the best - and most desirable - nuclear weapon in the world.
FOXHOUND - ironically set up by Big Boss - sends in its best agent to tackle Big Boss, Frank Jaeger, also known as Gray Fox. Fox disappears, so Solid Snake - a FOXHOUND rookie, barely ready for combat - is dispatched to the fortress Big Boss resides in, called Outer Heaven.
Snake defeats Big Boss, and destroys Outer Heaven. He also engages in a fight to the death with Gray Fox and kills him. Mission complete, Snake disappears...
Fast forward 5 years and its 1999. A new mercenary fortress has appeared called Zanzibar Island, and the men there are holding hostage a scientist responsible for a revolutionary new fuel substitute. The leader is none other than Big Boss, and he has with him another Metal Gear. Snake kills Big Boss for sure this time, destroys Metal Gear and escapes with the scientist. Another mission done, he disappears into the Alaskan wilderness...
Its 2010. Next-generation special forces have captured the Shadow Moses weapons dismantling facility off the coast of Alaska. The forces are lead by former members of FOXHOUND, which has appeared to have disbanded. The members include Big Boss' former rival Revolver Ocelot, and none other than Liquid Snake.
For this reason, Solid Snake is called up again, but he has aged greatly. Big Boss was approaching 60 when he was cloned, hence the aging process would speed up greatly. Snake also meets Gray Fox again, kept alive by drugs and by dressing up in a metal exoskeleton. Snake kills him, but not before Fox slices off Ocelot's hand. Snake kills Liquid and destroys another Metal Gear - REX - and makes a friend in the form of Shadow Moses scientist Hal Emmerich; also known as Otacon. Snake and Otacon escape, and aren't seen for two years.
Revolver Ocelot escapes alive with a disc containing the specifications of Metal Gear REX, and distributes them worldwide, and alerts the president, who is very pleased to hear this...
2012, and a lone tanker is passing under the George Washington Bridge in New York. An invisible figure bungee-jumps to the deck, and the figure is none other than Solid Snake, who appears to have aged the equivalent of at least 5 years in the space of two. Snake - with the Codec support of Otacon - is to infiltrate this tanker and take photos of a new Metal Gear supposedly being developed by the Marine Corps as a method of destroying the copies of REX created by the distribution of its specs.
Snake gets the photos, but is spotted by a surveillance CYPHER and is all over the news within hours. The photos are also seen too, but Snake disappears as the tanker is scuttled by Revolver Ocelot, and he has Liquid's arm...
2014, and the Big Shell oil cleanup facility is put up where the tanker was sunk two years before. Enter a new FOXHOUND recruit, Raiden, who is under the confident command of Snake's former commander Colonel Roy Campbell. Also at his side via Codec is his girlfriend Rose, who is less help and more hindrance.
The Big Shell has been captured by terrorist group Dead Cell, and the main hostage is none other than the President of the United States, who took over from the previous Prez after he was held responsible for the Shadow Moses Incident.
Raiden defeats all of Dead Cell, but discovers that the Big Shell is only a placebo, a cover-up for something much bigger. The Navy has produced Arsenal Gear - a massive Metal Gear about the size of 3 city blocks, if not bigger - which carries 26 Metal Gear mass-production models for attack.
Arsenal is scuttled, but Raiden comes face to face with Solidus, AKA George Sears. Raiden defeats him, and discovers his commander was only an AI unit operated by Arsenal Gear, to try and trick Raiden into doing things the government wanted him to do - including kill Solidus.
Raiden disappears with Rose for a quiet life. Awww....
Cut to MGS4.

Snake would never be scarred. He has a scar on one cheek and was also scratched by feisty Sniper Wolf in MGS1. Rawr.
Snake never gets scars except those above. :p
He's too hard for that.

Go look at the initial character sketches: http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/714/714044/img_2792482.html
Raiden doens't seem to have aged much at all, and he is holding a baby. Whether it is his baby or Olga's, it does suggets that time hasn't moved on far enough for Snake to have aged that rapidly. Also note in the character sketches - Snake is there, bandana and all, a bit more grizzled but certainly not the guy in the trailer. There is another figure in the sketches who has an eyepatch - I'd say it's much more likely it's him in the vid. Also, 'Snake' uses Big Boss' CQC skills, and throws up a bullet and catches it, a la Snake Eater. And the technology doesn't look anywhere near as advanced as it should do if enough time has passed for Snake to become that old.
I wouldn't take the fact he's called Snake in the trailer too seriously - remember how Solidus was called Snake at first? And the bit with Otacon is more of a jokey section anyway; I'd trust that bit far less than the rest of the trailer.
EDIT: Also, remember how desperate Kojima was to hide the existance of Raiden, to the point that he faked scenes with Snake in, scenes he knew that Snake wouldn't actually be in? I'm thinking of the Fortune battle here. I don't trust Kojima one little bit.

He is holding a baby aswell! I thought it was a sling, plus Snake said he would take care of Olga's child, he told Raiden to leave it to him.

I'd guess the poeple in the posters are:
Vamp - "I've died once, I can't die again." exploration of the NY enviroment on The Document of MGS2 also reveals Vamp standing in the scene, so it's inevitable he will return.
Meryl - It's definitely her, and she looks a bit more actiony. It's inevitable she and Snake escaped and Otacon made his own way out at the end of MGS1, as Snake points to his bandana and says "Infinite ammo" to Raiden in MGS2. Snake and Otacon obviously met up a little bit later.
Raiden - Dude still looks like a lady, but he's holding a baby. It must be his & Rose's child, since Snake said he would go after Olga's child alone at the end of MGS2. Not sure what role he will play yet.
Ocelot - I'm certain this is Ocelot, as Shinkawa's drawing (the designer of characters and other things in the whole MGS series) is very similar to his designs of Ocelot in MGS2. Still has that trademark long coat.
Snake - The daddy. It has to be him, but the genetic ageing process has taken its toll. It can't be MGS without Snake, so he has to be there in some shape or form. Look at the bandana, the grizzled chin fluff - Snake.
Otacon - Right away, it's obvious this is Otacon. He doesn't look much older, but the hair and even the way he pushes up his glasses, you can tell it's Otacon.
Eyepatch Man - Mystery Character number one. The eyepatch would lead you to believe that it is either Big Boss or Solidus, but they are both dead. The Army has the genetic remains of Big Boss, and Solidus fell off of Federal Hall and died in front of our very eyes at the end of MGS2. Why he's wearing a skin-tight spandex suit beats me - but at the moment I'm thinking this is a fourth clone of Big Boss. Either that, or he's Solidus in an MGS1-Ninja style exoskeleton, minus the headgear.
Raincoat Lady - A second mystery character. She reminds me of Naomi from MGS1, right down to the hair and the look on her face. Remember, she escaped at the end of MGS1 after being arrested for injecting Snake with the FOXDIE virus.
http://yojishinkawa.com/ - Yoji Shinkawa's site reveals something rather sad.

- Kojima and Shinkawa confirm that MGS4 is their final project in the series.

PS3 isn't out stil next year, so it might be launch, but know MGS it'll be maybe up to a year after PS3's release that it goes on sale.
In other news, Kojima's blog is now in English! He talks about his like of Franz Ferdinand (the band, not the assassinated man), meeting the creator of Sin City and the recent Charlie and the Chocolate factory film.
Genius man.

Raincoat lady looks quite similar to Olga in the character art for MGS2 (it's the hair). Unlikely, I know, but who's to say what goes on in Kojima's delightful noggin?

Yes but this is metal gear solid we are talking about, it isn't the kind of game that someone being dead would get their way of putting them in the game.

Fair enough. :p
But even then, it's not like someone else has lost an arm or anything, so Olga has nothing to live on through except her child. Which probably can't talk yet. But still...

Kojima and Shinkawa confirm that MGS4 is their final project in the series.
Didn't they say that about MGS3? and that dosn't mean it over, there could be spin off's, sequels etc.

No, Kojima said nothing about MGS3 being the final project - and he always said he'd wanted to pursue MG: Online, and hence a newer game Subsistence spawned.
Besides, MGS2's story was never tied up.

I thought he said Snake Eater was the last one (and hence he co-produced it (or was it co-directed?) as a way of testing his successor), but then decided to take full control again for MGS4 when he realised how utterly awesome PS3 would be, and the stuff he could do with it.
