The title says it all, but I'm gonna say something about it nevertheless.

Videogame music has many aspects, as they emulate many situations and athmospheres.
Heard any music in games that left you in shock and awe and a wide-open mouth because it was so grand? Or the kind that leaves you with a smile on your face due to the catchiness? Or perhaps some genuinely athmospheric tunes, be they scary or romantic?
Videogame soundtracks are often different from regular music and rythms. Myself, I usually don't go through a single day anymore without listening to a few of the Katamari Damacy (http://www.namco.com/games/katamari_damacy/) songs. Extremely catchy stuff that has become world renowned. I also admire Nintendo for their often excellent soundtracks.

So, what, in your opinion, is the best game music you've heard? Which game shows gleaming effort to please your ears? Tell us!

The rather stonking metal gear solid soundtracks. All 3 of them have something i like.

Oh, and the rather funky tetris music.

The Pacman music i like, because the BHG used a sample for it in one of their songs(the name eludes me) and whenever i hear it i get reminded of that song.

Oh and Halo music because a former best friend woke up to it and thaught we was being sacrificed

so many recent choices... that i won't make.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past remains the one game that I think has the best collection of music ever. I can't pick one theme I like most.

Retro Sonic the Hedgehog, SuperMario, SuperTux, and of course, the recognisable Alex the Kidd, Sega Mega Drive games are just so brilliant. When it comes to originally composed pieces Sega posotively wipes the floor with everything.

I also love some of the songs that are on Tony Hawk's pro skater, mainly the ones that go under the "punk" genre, I'm always introduced to a great new something when the new game comes out.

The rest of music on consoles tends to be tedious BS. In fact when I was a littlun playing my games I mostly turned music off, and sound effects up.

A few I'd also like to mention are the soundtracks for the Donkey Kong games on the SNES. I often find myself sitting there just listening to the music instead of playing.

I absolutely love the intro music to worms armageddon. If you have the game listen to it all the way through and it turns into a techno tune with a random guy speaking over the top. It's brilliant!

Agreed. I also found a This (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/sounds/mrb_smb_RBI.mp3), a cover by Mr. Bungle, which is very funkeh.

The Zone Of The Enders theme is nice, and I will plus anyone who can tell me who/what does the music on Devil May Cry 3.

Also, the MGS theme is classic.

It's a rather fantastic WOTW style parody. I haven't heard it in 5 years, but hell, it was hillarious.

There are some memorable classics, such as:

Sonic 1 - Final Zone
Sonic 2 - Chemical Plant Zone
F-Zero - Mute City
Zelda 3 - Dark World Map
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - VS. Mode

and such and such and such, however, full soundtracks would have to include Quake III Arena which is pretty much Sonic Mayhem; Destruction Derby 2 which was done by some safeasfuck unsigned artist; and the best soundtrack of all was Motorhead's tunes, done by Digital Illusion's own Olof Gustafsson. Safe.

Whereas they don't fit their games at all, the EA Trax are great to listen to on their own, visit the homepage (http://www.easports.com), click on a game like NHL 05 or Madden 05, and select music; some great tunes to preview there by bands like Chevelle, Earshot, and such.

And come on, the Video Game Music Archive (http://www.vgmusic.com) deserves a mention here! :D

DDR and beatmania IIDX :p

but aside from music-based games, I'd have to single out kirby. I STILL whistle the kirby boss music on my way to school. it's fucking addictive.

The ones that I usually hum are:

Sonic 2: Final fight with Robotnik
Mario 3: Almost anything from that game, I have all those songs recognized.
Final Fantasy Series: Chocobo song!

Halo 2. Not many video games can afford a symphony, and in true S&M style, they threw in an electric guitar.

How about Conker's Bad Fur Day on the N64?
'I am the great mighty poo, and I'm going to throw my shit at you!'
I thought the bloke on the worms armageddon tune was Sean Bean! It sure sounds like him.

This thread has been done before, but never mind.

Yes retro is good, but you all disappoint me with your lack of class and taste. The Deus Ex theme. The Halo theme. AND HOW COULD YOU FORGET MAX PAYNE?! Both of the Max Payne themes are so beautifully orchestrated - I actually prefer the second to the first, because they are so utterly moving.

I'll agree with geez on Quake III, I do very much like the choon at the end where Xaero ascends and then the credits start to roll. I also like the UT2003 (yes 3, not 4) intro music, and some of '04's in-game music is quite cool too (thinking of the music to DM-Sulphur here, which is very Matrixy).

And the Red Alert 2 (plus Yuri) themes will always have a place in my heart.

NES or SNES music, Devil may cry, Doom series (doom 3's is perfection at atmosphere building), GTA, Kingdom under fire, AVP , basicaly everything that has been mentioned so far, and more, but i cant think of them now

ToeJam and Earl on the MegaDrive.

Ever notice how Fools Gold by The Stone Roses sounds like one of the songs from that game?

While I'm here, I'll tell all of you that you are wrong. Silent Hill's music > everything else. Akira Yamota is THE man.

MGS themes ftw by far.
Then it has to be the soundtrack on THPS 1, don't really like any of the others. Half-Life had some cool stuff on it too as well, I thought.

every Mario game has had fantastic music.
Tetris and the techno remix by Aphex Twin (techno tetris)

Silent Hill's opening theme was indeed fucking awesome; and the theme when Lisa dies is heartwrenchingly good. Almost as sad as Aeris' theme :D

Also, Ferrari F355 Challenge on the dreamcast. Actually no... :p

Tetris, Mario, Sonic (I like some of the adventure songs, like Live and Learn.) are awesome.
But, my favorite has to be The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Beautiful game from gameplay to graphics and sound. I really liked it.

Harry Gregson-Williams is definately at his best on the Metal Gear soundtracks, but the power and emotion in the music in FF7 is by far and away my favourite, I felt like I had just had my soul crushed when Aeris Gets killed and the big sadness music kicks in :nana:

Final Fantasy 7 - Particularly the chocobo music. Also the Sonic games have fantastic music. Sonic 3's Carnival Zone tune was just great. MGS panic music was good. If you count San Andreas cruising around listening to old school hip hop is cool, this being the hip hop before 50 Cent and the rest of those wankers who have never seen a gun talking about how great they are. Old Quake music was quite good too. Kind of heavy rock instrumentals I'd never listen to, but they fit the game.

Oh yeah, and mario underwater music!

Oh, and Burnout 3.

I sincerely hope you are joking? The music is what makes that game short of perfect.
