View Full Version : "I'll be getting, like, an Xbox 360 for Xmas, and then a Revolution next year, like"

It seems that most people I know around my school seem to be going with the xbox 360 and then the Revolution next year. It looks like no one is interested in the Playstation 3 as it seems to be a Playstation 2 with better graphics and no gimmicks, whether it be media or gaming ones. However, this is just round my school, and it could have been one person convincing another then another etc. etc.
What are the people you know going to do when it comes to the 128-bit consoles?
128-bit? Isnt that the current one?
Well, I'm just getting the Revo...as are two or three of my mates, one of those is getting an xbox 360 also. I can see most of my mates sticking with what they've got for a while.
Oooh Yeah

PC vs. xbox 360 vs. PS3 vs. revolution.
portables don't count.. because they're rubbish.
PC, wicked, requires pricey equipment but the platform never really changes..
xbox 360, hang on a minute, isn't this console going to be really expensive, do a lot of things the PC does, and play a lot of PC based games? why not just soup up your PC and play the games on that? sounds like a good idea to me..
PS£ (no that's not a typo) expensive is the word, better graphics, more features, and the same old games series' that sony have been relying on since the days of the playstation. the PS3 is the best bit of kit on the market for gaming, but with that price tag and these stale games sony will no doubt lose part of their market dominance this time around if they don't get their act together.
nintendo, you're going to be summer 2006. everyone will have spent their money.. boo-hoo.
you will have a hard-core set of fans who will wait out for your revolution (me included) because your console is light, small, quiet cheap and looks like a TON of fun.
as they so elequently put it, we aren't following sony and xbox in beefing up the hardware and relying on the old style of games.
and as i so elequently :D put it, you can play many of the games from xbox 360 on the PC, which is a preferred platform to many people.
if i had any choice, i'd go for the revolution, sure i'd like a PS3, i'm sure it will be good. but with that price tag they've lost me as a consumer, i was a die hard PS fan/boy until 2 weeks ago.
i expect most of my friends will hold out for the PS3, waiting until summer 06 for the revolution will require real determination, we're all gran turismo junkies.
we're geeks so mostly PC is the platform of choice for late night sessions of counter strike.. but the PS3 when you want some good old fashioned racing.
revolution is what i will try and convince them to wait for though.
deal breakers.
revolutions controller is a pro, the non-existant line-up is a possible con, nintendo often gets criticised for being a console with 'kids games'
sony, get something new to your classics (final fantasy, gran turismo, jak and daxter, etc etc) and maybe people will fork out for your console
xbox, moved in the right direction, hiring all the old final fantasy staff (mystwalker studios for anyone interested) gets some good games out instead of being a 1 hit wonder with halo and maybe people will go for your poorly designed console.

I reckon I'll do what the thread topic says, but without saying "like" so much.
I'm not 100% sure about Revolution yet, the potential is certainly there but I'm staying skeptical for now. I'd love to own all three, it just depends on my financial situation when PS3 comes out, or, more likely, when it gets its first price drop.
None of my friends intend to get any of them as far as I know. Actually, I'd be surprised if many of them had even heard of any of the new consoles. Most of my friends got pretty bored of gaming after PS1 :(

I'm not sure..
Xbox 360 or Revolution..
I'm not sure about the Revolution.. I'd like to test the remote-like controller first..
If the controller works, it's going to be Revolution for me, because it looks like Microsoft is doing the same thing they did with the Xbox; saying it's almost perfect. It is going to be like an expensive Xbox with better graphics.. same with PS3. No, I'll stick with the Revolution.

I'm probably gonna wait at least a year until I get any of them (I might not even get one), like I did with the PS2. I'm just not interested in any of the launch games, and the only ones that mildly interest me at the moment are MGS3 and perhaps the new GTA.

I will get the Xbox 360 as soon as I can but mainly becuase of what I have read about new game title HUXLEY.
I don't know if I will buy the full kit and I have to add that wireless controls make me nervous so already I am forking out extra cash.
The reveloution will be awesome but again how many of my amigos will have it will number zero so I am left alone buying games and not being able to swap them about.
PS3 I agree with you that it will be expensive just to play the same game titles but with larger numbers, but it does have some good titles in the pipeline but again all on the drawing board.
A PC is still the best investment but again I will always need a pc for other things so I can still do two things at once when investing in consoles :)

Nah, don't worry. The xbox has a 32-bit CPU, which is the same as a PS1. Once you get to a certain point it doesn't really matter. 256-bit CPUs are quite unnecessary in consoles at the moment. What matters is the GPU, which was 256-bit in the xbox.
The PS2 has a 128-bit CPU, but only 300 odd MHz clock speed, whereas the xbox clocks in at over 700MHz.
You can't judge a console by the size of it's buses anymore.

Wow, wow. Xbox 360 is not like PS3 at all. Have you read about the online and multimedia features? That's what the 360 is focused on. And, well, if you take that away, it'll be like a PS3; a technical upgrade of the previous console and just that. I'll still be getting it, though, because I am the online type, and the 360 is my perfect partner.
But the Revolution really is that, a revolution. If that controller can be used as a sword or magic-casting device, then I just soiled my pants. I hear it can be a gun too. It seems Nintendo aren't trying to milk us for our money but just create a great gaming system and ignore all those multimedia gimmicks. But when they follow that mentality, well, when the PS1 played audio CDs and the N64 couldn't and when the PS2 could play DVDs and the GameCube couldn't...drop in sales.
I'll be getting an XBox 360 and then a Revolution, but not until the 360 is under £230 (proper version) and the Revolution has come down in price since release, whatever that price may be.

Well a lot of people in my school are Xbox users, but a few are opting for the PS3!?! Most of the chavs are gonna get the PS3, of course, 'cause they alreay have a PS3, and it's "better". If I'm gonna get one, I'm opting for the '60! Also, a few mates are gonna get the PSP instead...

Definitely the revolution. But not my classmates. I had a situation earlier.
Me: "What next-gen console are you getting?"
The Great Unwashed: "Probably the PS3 or the Xbox 360"
Me: "Why? The revolution is going to be better"
TGU: "It won't, nintendo suck. Besides, the other two are much more powerful and have better graphics."
Me: "Why not keep your current console then?"
TGU: "Better graphics"
Me: "0_o You cultural philistine. Never talk to me ever again."

"Talking 'bout a revolution. Oooooooh Yeah!"
I want one. Now. Damn time and its immalleable linear progression.
But seriously - I'm not taken by the X360 or PS3 - they are just selling power for powers sake - and I can get that through my PC. I want innovation from my console, and good old Ninty will provide.
(just to prove I'm not a complete fanboy, consoles I have owned include: Atari 2600, NES, Sega Magadrive (SeyGaaaaah!), SNES, Playstation, N64, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube. I still own the PS, the N64 and the GameCube. The GC has the prized 'under the telly' slot, and the others get dusted off occassionally.
It seems Nintendo aren't trying to milk us for our money
That's what every companies main goal is! Milk their target audience of as much money as possible.

Sony PlayStation products - for people who are just general sheep (including chavs).
Microsoft Xbox products - for people who know what the best games, graphics, online play, controllers etc. are, and are sane.

Mose definitely a Smash Bros. Tournament... though, come to think of it, with Smash Bros. being so hyped up, you can't really control it with the new controller, can you? hmm.. they'll have to have the standard controller from the get-go.
Anyway, Revolution, all the way. Then possibly, 360. Definitely not PS3, I don't really like it at all. Just a personal thing. http://ps3grill.com/
I'm so fucking sick of the whole "Nintendo kiddy games". First of all, they have lots of popular games that aren't kiddy at all. Resident Evil exclusive, anyone? Metroid? Hmmm? Ring a bell? Second of all, if you can swallow your pride to play a "kiddy" game (oooh, you're much too manly for that aren't you? I mean, seriously, what respect does anyone who dedicates that much time to gaming have to lose anyway) you'll notice that they're some of the best games made. Yeah, I played Halo and GTA last year, and they're good games, but Paper Mario was still my game of the year.
Peace out.

jak and daxter was the most kiddy game i ever played.
but i loved it, it was the first kids game i laughed at since.. i dunno, BBC computer's how to spell program.
don't get me wrong, i love the series on playstation, crash bandicoot, spyro, the getaway.. jak and daxter, gran turismo, grand theft auto, the rally games and so much i haven't mention (including wipeout), sony have it dialed.
but for me they're getting stale.
nintendo even if they don't come up with some new material, i'll still be reasonably happy with what they've come up with.
the console itself is refreshing enough for me, just some more h-core games.
PS anyone know what the deal is with final fantasy crystal chronics? is this a cube game or revolution? is it out yet? i saw a trailer and it looks stunning.
and compatible with the DS i hear.

I'll end up getting a PS3 probably. But mostly because of the games that are coming out that i've been waiting to play for months. Nintendo has never done much for me and the X-box is essentially just a PC.
Obviously I'll be waiting for a price drop. £300-£400 is way too much to be spending on a console.
It's either the Revolution or PS3. Xbox 360 isn't that great. The main features are internet gaming. Sure thats great but thats what a PC is for. The PS3 excites me becuase it's more powerful, there's a lot of great games coming out and it focuses on multimedia. The Revolution excites me because Nintendo are always bringing out some new and different which is always quite amusing.
Where did this PS3 is for chavs thing come along. I'm sure all these chavs can afford the price tag.
Don't forget that the PS2 was £300 when it came out. I'm sure it's going to instantly reduce in price otherwise they won't be able to compete.

Xbox 360 for me, because I like what its got going for it and the online is gunna be the best thing since sliced cheese. I don't care what you say about PC being better for online because that's YOUR personal opinion. I play online on my Xbox and PC, but the Xbox is far better imo. It's just so much easier to become emersed and it's nicer on my back to be able to sit in a lounge chair and not hunched over my keyboard. Argh, fanboys suck.
Btw, I guess I better give my opinion on Rev and PS3.
PS3 = no. For me. Just no. I don't like any of the PS games at all (except some of the multi-console ones) and the controllers are... well, shit in my opinion.
Rev = I don't know alot about it, so I can't flat out say I don't like it. I think I might like it if the controller was different. Sure its cool, but how functional can it possibly be? I don't think I'd be able to get my head around using it properly, and I'll keep losing it like the TV remote. So, unless Rev throws out some games that appeal to me (which is actually alot of Nintendo games) I'm not going to bother thinking about it.

Xbox 360 down in price!
Web posted on 19/9/05
Not out yet, and price cuts already announced.
With its release two and a half months away, it seems a little premature to be talking about price cuts on the Xbox 360, but that's exactly what Todd Holmdahl, corporate vice president of the Xbox product group (we'll pretend we have some sort of idea of what that job title actually means) has been doing.
"We will wind up cost-reducing the product every year," said Holmdahl to Reuters news agency. This isn't exactly surprising news, as it's happened with every console - over time the price gets reduced - but it's rather more unusual to have this confirmed before launch, and it's also nice to know that the price reduction is going to be a yearly occurrence. We're actually hoping that, if we put off buying a 360 for a couple of years, Microsoft will end up paying us to have an Xbox 360, but the likelihood of this is as high as the likelihood that we'd have the patience to wait a couple of years to get our hands on a 360, ie. not at all.
Estimates have it that the 360 will actually cost around $100 less per unit to manufacture than the PS3, which gives Microsoft a bit of breathing room when it comes to setting the price, and also a bit of an advantage over their rivals should a pricing war happen at any time. It may even have an effect on Sony's famously frowned at suggestion that the PS3 might be a bit expensive.
With the next-generation of consoles, the functions and abilities of each machine are obviously the most important thing in the long term, but with the 360 and PS3 looking fairly similar specs-wise, price may well play an important role in the outcome of the rather heated battle to come.

About the resolutions: it is interesting that such a high resolution would be supported, as it is higher than the 1080i output resolution for High-Definition TV (HDTV).

For me, i will be getting the xbox360 (hopefully) around christmas. Then i will save my pennies for the ps3 when it prehaps drops in price a little. As i dont play games all the time, its an on and off thing, id rarther wait for it to drop a little in price.
The reason i choose 360 is: I love the xbox, all of its games are fantastic that i have played, the graphics for this eara of gaming is just wow (*cough* splintercell 3 *cough*) and i love how you can get online with it quite easily. Also the controller(small one) is comfortable.
I'm just so glad the live headset has been slightly redesigned for the 360, i cant wear the current one for more then a few hours it starts to really hurt.
The nintendo revolution caught me off guard and its sparked my interest. I knew nintendo would do something different but not like that. But I wont consider getting it untill i try it myself first hand i think.

I was more striking back at the pictures in the first place. No-one in reality would be able to get away with such blatent-ripoffness.

no need for cautious consumerism.
Notice how nobody neutral in the giant console war told us to stop fanb0ying.

Sony better not steal any ideas from the Revolution...Nintendo will be really tight lipped about everything if they do...

Awww...somebody doesn't like it :p
It's not neccessarily cautious consumerism if they aren't supporting one single manufacturer.

As consumers (cautious or otherwise) we should really encourage companies to steal each others ideas so that market stays competative, stopping the industry from stagnating, and giving us better and better consoles.
Hypothetically speaking, what if Cadillac had come up with electric ignition and somehow legally prevented all other car manufacturers from using a similar system? All other cars would be stuck in the dark ages and Cadillac would have a monopoly over the luxury car market, and the lack of competition would remove their motivation to make further advances.
If you're a gamer and not just an unpaid corporate marketing operative, copying of ideas is in your interests.
This post came out more serious than I first intended.

By not encourageing them to steal ideas, arnt we encouraging them to come up with newer ideas, to compete with each others ideas?. Therefore giving each console induviduallilty?
Might not be right but that's what i think.
Both ideas really. There is a line that can be drawn between "Slight inspiration" from others ideas, and blatent plagerism.
That being said, if sony hadn't used the rumble pack idea on their duel shock, perhaps we wouldn't have it on every console, and the idea would have never taken off?

I'm sorry, I got lost. I hate extended metaphors!
I honestly think that Sony would have more/less sense than to try and plagurise something so unique. Even if they do it wont be until Revo outsells the PS3 and Sony go 'OMG! We are not stealing money at a stupid rate with our pathetic add-ons that only work on a few games (multitap) We must steal that idea, it is making lots of money, lovely money which we should be making. John!' 'Yes sir?' 'Give me all of your money!' 'Fuck you sir!' *shotgun* Jeeves, take his money and pass it to me... Thank you...' *shotgun*'

...And people would get so sick of the lazy design (which there would be, if you have a monopoly you can afford to get sloppy) that they would start to buy other cars...
But maybe, in the time that it takes people to get bored, the hypothetical Cadillac would get a huge enough market share that they could just buy out other car manufacturers, which would permanently remove the competition. You make a good point though, as does monhay.
I don't like Cadillacs at all, incidentally, but I do enjoy extended metaphors :)

Extending our cadillac theory, all the other manufacturers would design electric ignition in a slightly different way to bypass the patents. Unless one twunt was too similar to the original and got sued.
