Hey all... I have decided to give myself the title: "Unofficial Xbox Guru" If you have any problems with Xboxes, any discussion over Xbox, anything about Modding Xbox, I will do my best to help... PM me or post here for assistance or post here to start discussion over Xboxes, preferably modding (that is my specialty)

How do I manage a super jump on Lockout?

I know of two on Lockout... but it's harder to tell you than to show you... on XBC add modder69 and i'll catch up with you sometime... i'd rather not try my luck on XBL :)

Right; the IP address in the Xbox live setup console. Am I right in thinking that the IP address is auto assigned by your ISP upon connection, or indeed your NAT device or router? For example, if you're connecting to an ISP with a dynamic IP assignment policy on their servers, or you're retardedly connecting over a dial-up connection, sureley you can't put an IP in there? I can understand if you're using some little nifty tricks to run a LAN game or if you're on a static IP, but in most cases sureley you leave this field to be filled in automatically?

I don't have an Xbox, but I've heard this question sooo many times...

the architect

I really don't know, I always just leave it on automatic...

No mods questions yet? I know mods are disliked because of the turds who cheat on xbl... but some modding is enjoyable!

I know how much you know the answer to this :P

So I'm going to do the same thing. I know the answer to the following question but I'm going to ask you anyway. How could you ban a spesific IP from connecting to a game server you're hosting? We'll assume a basic ethernet connection via a router which is also connected to a network of PCs. Someone is being a twunt, you can kick them but they keep coming back and lets face it, that's annoying. How can you perminantly ban their IP or even a range of IPs from your server?

On this forum, it's unwise to call yourself the guru of anything, twats like me will always challenge it :)

of course I am, unofficially! but the negativity of that post is breaking my balls

My friend won an Xbox 360 off of every10minutes.com... he rubs it in whenever he sees me... I am going to have to fork out my 400 for it I suppose (way overpriced, but well worth it in the long run...)

I dunno too much about LAN works and stuff like that... I know more about the Xbox itself... sorry (but since you say you know the answer anyway, I'll assume the question was rhetorical anyway)

I'd like to think I know most there is to know about Xbox 360, I've been addicted to news and gossip about it for some reason. Ask away :)

While we're at it, I have an Xbox networking question which apparently isn't the architect's speciality but I may as well ask. I got a new router recently, after using ICS via my desktop PC for ages, and with it I can connect to Xbox Live, but it feels noticably slower to connect in-game. I've noticed it in Halo 2 and PGR2, and also regularily get error messages when trying to join a party (or have others join me) in Halo 2. You can get into the party after 2 or 3 tries, but it's annoying. Is there something simple I've missed on my router or the Xbox settings? The internet is working perfectly otherwise.

I don't know too much about the 360, but as far as modding goes, I may very well know the most about modding on the forums... but stop ragging about the self-appointed title (it was a joke, get it?) the 360 costs so much because the hardware within is much more advanced that the previous xbox and therefore costs more money to make than the Xbox and Microsoft actually loses money when they sell the Xbox, but they bank on you buying enough games to make up for the loss of profit... I don't understand how the 20 GB HDD is 100 dollars though... a bit of a rip-off to me any more questions, ask them here and I or someone else will answer

Isn't Xbox modding illegal?

i.e you have a modded xbox and then play Halo 2 Live = BOOM! BAN!

Plus the amount of fiddley things you have to do to actually mod it annoy me. All i want to do is stick a disk in and have everything done for me.

Not illegal, you just get banned from Live. If you sign onto live with a modded account, you're banned. You can still mod offline. And a lot of the time Bungie don't notice - I've still been in modded games.

Yeah, and you're only banned from matchmaking.
I want to try softmodding, which doesnt end your xbox's warranty, (cos I don't care about matchmaking anyway) to mod the maps and download new ones (I still hate cheaters).

Or I could just mod the original Halo and not banned at all :D.

Anything is welcome, seeing as i don't play Live hardly anymore plus 360 will be coming out.

While it is certainly expensive, it's worth noting that it's a laptop-sized HDD ($60 based on a quick look at newegg.com) in a custom-made (and supposedly rather tough) enclosure. Maybe somebody will mod the connector so that people can connect 3.5" drives? Just a thought.

Your best bet is a save exploit. It requires:

A copy of an exploitable game. These include 007: Agent under fire, Mech Assault and Splinter Cell.

You then need to obtain an exploit patch. You need to transfer this to your xbox by some means, I personally had an action replay memory card with PC link, got it for a few quid from amazon.

You can then boot an install disc for a linux distro or whatever you want using the CD player which is modded by this exploit. Using your LAN you can then put whatever you want on the HDD from your PC and run it :)

PS: Best Xbox modding site: http://www.xbox-scene.com. Now they are xbox gurus!

the architect

yes, the method lewiji describes is called softmodding (which is what I did to my xbox)

make sure that if you choose this method that when you run the linux installer you make a backup of the ms dashboard

xbox-scene is indeed a good modding site, as is halomods.com and xbox-hq.com

about the info for the HDD, quite interesting stuff... im sure someone will figure out how to make a modified HDD... hackers are all into modding whatever they can

Any more ideas?

the architect
06-10-2005, 12:14 AM
well, this is what I have on my xbox:

1) Xbox Media Player - Listen to shoutcast, stream movies and music thru network, play DVDs Without Playback kit, play music video off DVD or CD

2) Linksbox - Xbox Internet Browser (mostly just bragging rights)

3) Windows CE - Useless without keyboard and mouse, but again bragging rights

4) DVD2Xbox - Copy DVDs to the HDD

5) Emulators - SNES, NES, Atari, N64, PS1, GB, GBA... if you can find the ROMs, the emulator is there...

6) Trainers - Used for cheating in campaign on Xbox Games

7) Halo and Halo 2 Modding - other games have it too, but not quite as easy nor as big a community - www.halomods.com

8) Play homebrew games: Madness Interactive, Star Wars Starfighter, Asteroids, DOOM (original), Quake (which I hear can actually play against opponents on computers, but I've never tried)

Probably other stuff but I'm too tired to think about it right now

Convinced yet?

Im still not into full on softmodding as of yet but I have everything ready to do it. If I had a 2nd xbox then I would right away...

But for now, Im using a certain temporary UnleashX dash that I have to insert splinter cell each time to reach, but I will never get banned from live because its not officially installed.

As for modifying maps, I will publish just how easy it is, if any of you would like to either:

A) Just to know
2) To do it yourself
Z) Just wanna pester me and make small talk.

It's quite funny to play with your OWN modded maps and not just patches you attach to yours that others have made. I can still say that I have never modded over XBL though. I do it for my own amusement over kai ;).

Also, By using a certain 2 programs (Which I have..) its possible to force host on XBL to your friends...

When they do it to you, you can boot people out of the game and therefore cheat your way up like that... Its the "NEW" cheat system and it's called "bridging."

Applying to UK ADSL users only; what jack on the other end of the cable would you use to plug into the microfilter? Sureley that's an RJ11? I feel a bit cockish at the moment, as I should know this :|

My xbox went strange today. It claimed that only 2 users could be on it at once. 1 on the xbox, and one from the PC. But it claimed that there were 2 users already online and I hadn't used my PC to log in to it.

Anyway, On some cooler news: I have made some awesome mods on the 9 different maps, but many people cant take the full advantage of seeing my mods, as a lot of it, involves hex editing and meta swapping. I do the basic swaps, Dependancies etc, but I need to learn about making others able to see my mods.

did you resign it with same sig 1? thats what I use and it works every time.

also, don't support modding on xbox live here. it shines a bad light on modding even if you aren't doing it to cheat. a normal user thinks this way; Modder=Cheater!!!! I'm reporting you! My brother (seriously it was, not the excuse that everyone else seems to think is okay. My brother and I mod together) was dumb enough to try to beat the system and went on live with mods. Thanks to him my gamertag has been banned from matchmaking therefore wasting the 1 year subscription I used on my account. I plan to get a new one when the 360 comes out. Don't risk being banned, and don't shine a bad light on modding.

That's actually good stuff, it's good to see companies taking a stand against cheating. Sounds a helluva lot like Steam in a way.

In other news, how much could I expect to pay for either a brand new Xbox console, or a second hand Xbox with two controllers, a remote, and two or three games?

These days, places like Gamestation offer stupidly high prices for such kit.

Cloud Trifle
22-10-2005, 04:21 PM
Xboxes are incredibly huge amounts of money still because of peoples fascination with xbox live mostly and even second hand xboxes are swapping hands for around £60 - £90 on ebay.

I believe computer exchange (CeX) are the cheapest for xboxes at the moment. They sell second hand ones for around £60.

Also the randomizer is shit, and just corrupted a bunch of my maps :(.

Ah well, I prefer doing things myself anyway.

I have 2 month free trials on xbox live anyway so I get them banned on purpose and play funny custom games with friends.

Never said that it was bad, I'm just pissed at him because I still loved playing Halo 2 online.

If you are wanting to buy an original Xbox, wait until mid-November when the 360 is released. I expect the Xbox to endure major price drops

The first version of the hardware will most likely be the easiest to hack, which is worth keeping in mind if you're into modding. Having said that, I did get burned by having my 1st gen Xbox's Thompson DVD drive break down after 2-3 years.

A better reason not to get one at launch is the painful post-launch drought of good games.

I am eager to see how long it takes to realize the full potential of the console. the graphics at leanuch are better than the xbox original, but I'm sure they're nowhere near the best that console can do

I've never played Midnight Club... any of them. the only racing game that I play for Xbox is Project Gotham... I will probably try Forza though, it looks amazing!

I wanna try Battlefield 2 as well...

my suggestion would be to not buy forza right away. i hated it when i tried it at the store. you should rent it/ demo it at the store before even considering buying it. i have PGR but i don't really like the gameplay though i may try PGR 3 when it come out. MC 3 DUB has gotta be my favorite racing game ever, probably because one can customise just about everything in the car.

my xbox is soooo screwed up right now:( when i turned halo 2 on the other day, it loaded the first screen about half way then when i clicked multiplayer it just said "no". fortunately that hasn't happened for the last couple days:)

I was so hyped up for Forza, and I played the hell out of the demo, but as soon as I got the full game I just couldn't be bothered. It turns out I'm not really in to customisation/tuning and I don't really like the game trying to appeal to everybody by having a bunch of different difficulty options you could turn on or off. I know it doesn't force you to use any assists but I just don't like it for some reason. I was going to trade it in for something, but I gave it a try with some split screen racing the other day and somehow it seemed more fun than I'd remembered, so I guess I'll keep it in case the urge arises again. Also, I very much enjoyed painting all my cars pink and white with frilly patterns.

Nothing gets me like Project Gotham, it seems, although Rallisport Challenge 2 is pretty fantastic. Midtown Madness 3 is also a great laugh. I've just realised I have 5 Microsoft published racing games for Xbox, jeebus.

Hooray for Battlefront 2! All the good parts of the old game are back, plus you can be a Jedi and fight in Space!

yeah, i might get it. i got the first one and was pretty bored with it after a while. maybe this one will be different.

BTW you should add your name to the Live gamertag list. (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39175)

We have an xbox, and im very tempted to soft-mod it and chuck linux on it, but it cant because its my little sisters(she won it in a colouring in comp).
I dont see why so many people get hyped up over halo, and i dont see why so many people insult the xbox controller. Sure, it sucked before, but controller S is actually very good.
I don't have live, i would rather spend that sub on a new PC game instead, but i use the xbox quite a bit and complete the game, and it goes on the shelf to become a novelty to anyone who comes over.

Tell me, is burnout 4 or whatever it is any better or similar to 3? if so, i might get it. i played for 2 hours over at my cousins house who has at least 40 xbox games, and i throughly enjoyed creating havoc.

i only have burnout 3, but I love it.

softmodding is awesome, I'll say that much...

I'm not gonna add my gamertag to it, because my brother got it banned when my softmods were still on, he went on Live. I'll add my new one when I get my 360.

The controller S is nice, but my favorite is the 360 controller

i tried big red one out last night (i rented it). it's a pretty good game. the online play is awesome, though i'm not going to buy it, i'm just gongto get CoD2 for the 360. in conclusion i'd say try it before you buy it.

I feel Im growing up a lot lately.

I used to get so excited about launches of new consoles and such but now I just really dont care that much..

Theres only a couple of games I actually want for either of the next gen consoles, and it wouldnt really bother me if I ever played them at all :(...
