Personaly I've owned:

CD Player - £30
Creative Jukebox 2 - £150
Minidisc Player - £200

Personaly I found the CD player to be too akward with the swapping of CDs (just incase you are wondering I have over 2000 tracks), the Jukebox was very good but huge and I couldn't store it anywhere. I then sold it for a Minidisc player which was worst of the bunch. It was small which I wanted but it was bloody awful with the discs, it could only hold 2 albums of MP3 quality music.

Next on my list is a iPod (suppose to be gadget of the year), which I am recieving as a present for my 18th.

Anyway, what do you think of them, wonder of modern tech or another fad?

I have a feeling they are here to stay. Or at least the idea is. I have a rio cali myself and I love it.

I've got an RCA lyra, it only has 64 megabytes of internal memory, but its expandable (thank god!!!). I know that mp3 players are here to stay.. This year, companies like Pepsi are going to start offering free downloads for buying a product of theirs. This could mean problems for some people due to the website spamming them or making them stay there and pay for service, even if you don't use it. (this is what I've heard) Oh, and with iPods, if you are using WMA files, I have had people say that it doesn't play those.

I've had this (http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/mp3-panasonic.gif) panasonic MP3 player for about three years now and I've gotten a hell of a lot of use out of it. I have a 256 meg SD card in it which holds about 3 and a half hours of music (4 albums-ish) and I wouldn't swap it for anything other than another SD player, the small size means I can easily carry it around my neck with a provided strap and I don't even realise it's there. The downsides are that it's an old model and uses crappy real media software and AAC format but the more recent ones all have direct MP3 support so hopefully I'll get one of those someday.

i use this (http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?prodid=4884), it's a creative mp3 player, it's really small, and it can store about 3-4 albums. It's also very easy to put music onto it using xp, because xp treats it as if it was an external device like a zip disk for example when you put it in the usb port, you just drag the files onto it, no software for that needed, and voila. You can take it right out, put it in the casing and listen to it.

You can also record your voice into it from a mic.

my ipod is my underage wife. i pay her for her services with cheese and hairspray.

i found that switching from a discman or other mp3 player to an ipod is alot like switching from windows to osx. windows/ discman seems fine at the time. but once you switch, you wonder how you ever lived before. im not being preachy either. you can all go die.

I have a cheap version of the Ipod; a "Jukebox 10 player".

It's bigger, less pretty and instead of a pretty big screen is has a 1 line screen.

It's half the price though and I'm very satisfied with it.

Oh it's a 10 gig player and cost me 300 euro's .

i beg to differ, the ipod boasts simple to use layout, no moving parts (cept the hard drive), 4 games, back light, and its easy to organise

ryanwalley

yeah. whats this music quiz thing. when i select it, the music stops and it says no songs. and for your second question, 10gbs. its not as much as 20 but it does nicely.

i've got a creative nomad, 20 gigs, great software, decent batery life but a beast in size. the new zen is luvverly but suffers, same as ipod for battery life. ipod really isnt the best on the market, a good machine certainly but there is some very good competition out there that is ignored as apple have the market. its a shame, the Iriver and the hdd100 should be given more credit.

archos have put in a nice twist with the vid jukebox, the picture quality is actually good, which surprised me.

I have some obscure MP3 player that this site (http://dansdata.com/usbmp3.htm) refers to as "George".

It's 128meg and has had its run of troubles (hooray for warranties!), but it holds enough music for my liking and is a mean storage device.

I recorded (http://www.kiwiblog.com/armageddon) some panels and interviews I had with celebrities at a expo with it last year.

I have the crappiest MP3 player alive. I got them when they first came out, so it was neat and beautiful and unique. Then I broke the battery latch, and ever since then it went dowhill. It only holds 8 songs, and its by some company i've never heard of (and cant remember).

Soem girl down the street from me bought an MP3 player, and doesnt even have a computer to download music, let alone her parents ever letting her download.

A kid on my bus has this awesome 3-inch disk CD player though. you download the tunes to the floppy disk thing, and its so...pretty...

iPods are sexy... woo...

I may invest in an IPOD, how much is one in the UK now? (Can't be arsed looking it up). I think I'll get a 20 gig model, don't see the point in anything more.

No it doesn't but upgrading is pretty cheap. Ive been looking to get one of these and ive ruled out as it has no line in and out or even optical in out and I want a) to record from vinyl and b)in as higher quality as possible which means from my hifi. This isnt the case for most however and it is an excelent machine. I am instead considering the iRiver IHP 120

You could get a line in/out to your PC and stream it to an MP3.

Firstly that would go not produce as good quality as if I went through my amp. I am unsure but I might well need a phono stage as signals from turntables are different to those from other sources. Thirdly all my hifi equipment is in a different room to the PC (my family shares the PC and hence would not want it my bedroom). Also ripping the files at the high quality I would want (uncompressed wav so i could make them into compliations to be played on my hi fi in decent quality) would take up valuable hard drive space of which I am running out of. Also apart from the cost of intalling that id have to upgrade my USB and OS which would be a bit annoying as ill probably need to get an entirely new computer next year when I go to uni. Overall it isnt worth it. Also I hear the iriver sounds nearly as good (or better according to some hi fi magazine in europe) as the ipod and given id be recording to it from better equipment I should get the best result. Along with that this is not my only option there is also MD ( I have a full size hi fi seperate MD deck), MP3 CD and a like to be considered but this thread doesnt concern them so I shall not go into them.
