Some very tasty stuff. Germany and Poland, Argies and the Dutch, Italy and the Czechs, mmmm.

But Sweden again? WTF?

i'm going to have to be a pessimist and say we're not going to qualify. we'll lose 2-0 against austria with smith and hargreaves scoring the goals

I believe you mean own goals.

I hope the Republic of Ireland manage to qualify, they're underrated in my opinion, and they could probably beat England on a good day.

Who has qualified for the World Cup?

With 760 qualifying matches played across the world so far, the race to reach the 2006 World Cup is reaching its climax.

With 32 teams able to make it to the finals in Germany, 10 teams have booked their places at football's biggest tournament which starts on 9 June.

But with the final qualifying matches taking place around the globe this week, which other countries will be taking part in Germany next year?

BBC Sport works out who needs to do what this weekend and next Wednesday.

EUROPE

# Germany
# Ukraine
12 others made up of seven group winners, two best runners-up and three winners of play-offs involving other six runners-up.

England will definitely qualify if they win both their remaining matches - against Austria and Poland.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's team could also seal a place with a game remaining if they win at home to Austria on Saturday and Holland beat the Czech Republic.

Scotland are two points behind both Norway and Slovenia in Group Four. If Walter Smith's side beat Belarus on Saturday, they will give themselves a fighting chance of finishing second behind Italy.

But if Scotland fail to beat Belarus and Norway defeat Moldova, they will fall out of qualification contention.

The Republic of Ireland have to win both games to stand any realistic chance of finishing in the top two and guaranteeing at least a play-off spot.

Northern Ireland and Wales cannot qualify.

The European zone play-off draw will take place on 14 October, with the two-legged ties played on 12 and 16 November.

SOUTH AMERICA

# Argentina
# Brazil
Two others qualify automatically and the fifth-placed team goes into a play-off with Australia, who beat the Solomon Islands in the Oceania qualifying final.

Ecuador and Paraguay are in pole position to secure the final two automatic places, but Uruguay, Colombia and Chile are all still in contention.

The play-off games between the fifth-placed team and Oceania group winners Australia take place on 12 and 16 November.

ASIA

# Japan
# Iran
# South Korea
# Saudi Arabia
One other team to enter play-off against Central American country.

Bahrain and Uzbekistan meet over two legs on 8 and 12 October. The winner will then play the fourth-placed team from the Concacaf region in another play-off to decide who reaches Germany.

CONCACAF (North and Central America and Caribbean)

# USA
# Mexico
The third-placed team will also qualify automatically, while the fourth-placed team will face either Bahrain or Uzbekistan in a two-legged play-off.

Costa Rica need only a draw from their final two games to secure the last automatic place, while Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago both have the chance to take fourth place.

AFRICA

# No qualifiers yet
Winners of each of the five qualifying groups go through.

With the final round of matches on 8 October to come, all five groups have two potential winners: Togo or Senegal (Group 1); Ghana or DR Congo (Group 2); Cameroon or Ivory Coast (Group 3); Angola or Nigeria (Group 4); Tunisia or Morocco (Group 5).

OCEANIA

Australia beat the Solomon Islands 9-1 on aggregate in their two-legged play-off. They will play the fifth-placed South American country in a play-off on 12 and 16 November.

I sincerly hope England can win tomorrow, and that Errikson can get his head so far up from his own backside to get a decent team together which doesnt include Hargreaves, James or one of the Neville brothers. Aparently Errikson is facing a "difficut choice" of who to put in defence, its easy enough for me and why in the name of god has he left out Ferdinand? this would be my choice:

---Luke Young---John Terry---Rio Ferdinand---Ashley Cole---

see, simple.

On the subject of which other European countries will qualify for the WC next year I can only see England and Ireland realistically out of the UK. I dont think Northern Ireland and Scotland have strong enough teams to compete there (mindyou neither do England at the moment but thats mainy due to the manager if you ask me). This is mainly just my opinion but i think its fair enough to speculate what I have done.

He's left out Ferdinand because he's not been brilliant recently, and Sol Campbell is a in good form.

The only way we Scots can get through is if we win our two upcoming matches, against Slovenia and Belarus, and Norway lose to one of Moldova and Belarus.

So, it could very possibly be out of our hands. Personally, I'd be happy with winning our two games - that alone will prove we've improved greatly since the manager change. If we qualify, that's just icing on the caek.

ontopic/ Switzerland have qualified after an amazing game in Turkey. The Swiss went 1-0 (3-0 on agg), but then the Turks got it to 3-1, Switzerland get an 84th minute goal to make it 3-2 (4-3 agg), but then Turkey get one back in the 89th to make it 4-4. And there it finished. Swiss go through on away goals.

MEMO TO ALL FEMALES re: JUNE - JULY 2006

Extremely important advice and recommendations to be passed on to
wives, girlfriends, fiancés, others, sisters, daughters, etc. These
rules are to be communicated prior to the World Cup in June/July this
year...

1. From 9 June to 9 July 2006, you should read the sports section of
the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the
World Cup, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations.
If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or
you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any
attention.

2. During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without
any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will
lose it (your eye).

3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don't
mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without
distracting me. If you decide to stand nude in front of the TV, make
sure you put clothes on right after because if you catch a cold, I
wont have time to take you to the doctor or look after you during the
World Cup month.

4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a
refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out of your mind if
you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone,
or pick up the baby that just fell from the second floor....it wont happen.

5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the
fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on, and
please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over
to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and
6am, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.

6. Please, please, please!! if you see me upset because one of my
teams is losing, DO NOT say "get over it, its only a game", or "don't worry,
they'll win next time". If you say these things, you will only make me angrier
and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about
football than me and your so called "words of encouragement" will only
lead to a break up or divorce.

7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk
to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the
halftime score is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying "one"
game, hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to "spend
time together".

8. The replays of the goals are very important. I don't care if I have
seen them or I haven't seen them, I want to see them again. Many times.

9. Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child
related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because:
a) I will not go,
b) I will not go, and
c) I will not go.

10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to
watch a game, we will be there in a flash.

11. The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as
important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying "but
you have already seen this...why don't you change the channel to something
we can all watch??", the reply will be: "Refer to Rule #2 of this list".

12. And finally, please save your expressions such as "Thank God the
World Cup is only every 4 years". I am immune to these words, because after
this comes the Champions League, Italian League, Spanish League, Premier League, etc etc.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Regards,

Men all over the world

Right. Heres a pointthat buging me. I've just been reading up on a few teams while trying to avoid th reality that an essay is due in 150 minutes.

Favourites for the World Cup (according to William Hill):
Brazil 9/4
England 7/1
Italy 15/2
Germany 8/1
Argentina 8/1
Spain 12/1
Holland 12/1
France 12/1
Portugal 20/1
Czech Rep 25/1
Sweden 28/1
Mexico 40/1
Ukraine 50/1
Ivory Coast 50/1
Croatia 50/1
Poland 80/1
Australia 80/1

Now, I looked at the rankings today. Some of these make little sense in relation to this. Germany as joint 4th favourites for the cup when they rank 19th in the World? How does that work. Also the Ivory Cost = 32nd. Now I don't mind this, but when I consider that the USA are 5th in the official FIFA World Rankings and they clock in at 100/1 it does make yuo wonder. Are they just basing their odds on reputation alone? Peoploe aften dismiss the US as a weak side, but they must have done something right to get to 5th. Mexico are 4th and they get only slightly better odds than 45th placed Ukraine.

Just made me a little miffed for the efforts of the US and Mexico.

Oh, one last gripe. The Czech Republic = 2nd best team in the WORLD = 10th favourites to lift the World Cup.

edit/ Toooo many typos thanks to these shitty Uni keyboards.

I wouldn't take any of that for granted. The have Spain at 12/1, who always perform badly on the big stage... Italy aren't too great too at times. I would have ranked Sweden higher, possibly 15/1 because they are my outside favourite to go far... the semi finalists for me are Brazil, France, Argentina and then either England/Sweden. England will only get there if Rooney is fit probably, or if we don't suffer any further setbacks

They're a British company so they know they'll get a lot of bets on England, therefore they cut the odds to reduce their losses should England win.

The odds are also assuming Wayne doesn't play. If on Thursday they announce he will be fit, I'd expect the odds to jump to 5/1.

Personally, i'm tempted to put a tenner or two on France. Remember, either France or Argentina will PROBABLY be in the final, and neither can face Brazil, so it could be worth a bash.

Plus..if we where in there, and we lost to them...it'd be a SLIGHT silver lining to get a couple hundred quid :p

I did mine ages ago. I bviously had us winning it...because whats the point of being pessimistic on a sodding prediction thing? :p :D

Our road came to...Poland in the Second Round, then Portugal in the QF.

The SF consisted of England Vs Brazil (The inevitable matchup, if you ask me), and France Vs Argentina. I can't make the call between France and Argentina though....that would be one hell of a game...but I would LOVE to face either of them in the final. Both are old foes....would make a CRACKING final.

My preference...an England vs Argentina final. It would be more difficult, but alot sweeter if we could finally get some revenge for the hand of god :p

I'd obviously hope for a US victory, but it's a long shot. They'd have to get seriously lucky. As AngryPaul said, we aren't a weak side, but others like Brazil are superstars.

I'd go with the obvious Brazil, but I'd not be shocked if Argentina or England wins (even though they're missing Wayne). Czech would be a good choice too.

Rooneys actually making an incredible recovery, and could be fit in time for the group stages. So it's looking like at the very least, he'll be fit for the QF onwards.

Some shocks in there AP. I don't think Czech Rep are going to be as good this World Cup. Baros is there main striker and I don't think he is up to it now. The Ukraine are a one man team and he is injured. If there is no service then Sheva won't score.

If you believe in your predictions then I suggest getting some bets on. There are some good prices for things that could happen like Mexico 1st and Portugal 2nd or Sweden winning the group.

If anyone wants to sign up to Betfair then PM me and I will give you a code to get £20.

I spent ages this afternoon looking at the odds for the outright winner on William Hill's site, but had trouble getting behind any of the teams with interesting odds and ended up turning to the top scorer page. My £5 eventually went on Pauleta at 33/1, which were rather modest odds I thought.

Portugal's all-time top scorer? Top scorer in the European qualifying group? Playing Mexico, Iran and Angola? With my reputation? It's a done deal!

I'd go with the obvious Brazil, but I'd not be shocked if Argentina or England wins (even though they're missing Wayne). Czech would be a good choice too.The Czech squad looks to me like it's full of ageing (but once great) players who might not be able to handle younger teams, but maybe there's some young stars in there I don't know about. I have a feeling USA could get 2nd in their group. Having said that, 5 Live (BBC sports and news station) did some coverage on USA's world cup chances last night and none of it sounded very positive.

Ronaldinho doesn't score as many as you think.

I'd go for one of the better team strikers, but not always the superstars. Suker (Croatia) = 1998? Oleg Salenko (Russia) and Hristo Stoitchkov (Bulgaria) = 1994?

Only 5 times in the last 17 World Cups has the top scorer come from the winning country. FACT.

It's a new design - as opposed to being stitched together from lots of hexagons or whatever, it's made from only two pieces that go together.

I've read mixed reviews of it by players, but the consensus is "they bring out new balls all the time, we'll adapt". Besides, they're all on a level playing field, so no biggie.

The skillfull players love it, the goalies hate it. It clearly designed with a more entertaining match in mind, so it's all good.

Great stuff in the Poland game. Down 1-0 at half time.

This would be brilliant for England. If we win our group, this would mean almost certainly avoiding Germany, and having a very real chance of getting one of the softest second round draws available, either Costa Rica or Ecuador. Taking nothing away from them, but it's a pretty nice path to the QF :D

This is very good for me, because i've already booked my coach to Plymouth to watch the QF and SF with me mates >___>

Not so much "skillful players love it" as anyone who feels like hoofing the ball from 30 yards knows they have a better chance of fluking a goal than usual.

RESULT!

Great show from T&T, and it's given us one foot in the second round. We only have to beat T&T, and we just have to avoid defeat to Sweden (assuming they beat Paraguay).

I can. T&T will get a good rest after this magnificient performance, plus they will be on a high having held one of the outside contenders for the trophy

But they will have used up massive amounts of energy already. And as gutsy and determined as their performance was Sweden could/should have still one. Allback in particular missed three sitters.

Don't agree with what you say about them pace. A few players do, Carlos Edwards, Birchall, Samuel, Glen. But most of their team isn't quick especially up front (Johm) and central defence (Lawrence and Andrews/Sancho).

Ivory Coast deserved more goals than that. The Argies were a bit twattish when it came to falling over (etc.) and kicking it off pitch near the end. I'm glad one of the Ivorians booted that ball into the Argentian goalie's face near the end.

Mexico 3-1 Iran
Mexico deserved this win - they played well. Iran were a bit iffy.

USA 0-3 Czech Republic
The Czech's are awesome. Nedved's on Ritalin. USA had Beasley who had a few tries (maybe on target next time, bucko). Good win.

Italy 2-0 Ghana
Ghana deserved at least one goal. Italy played alright but I can't really remember much of this game...

(Australia 3-1 Japan) - WTF? I saw a tiny bit of this game (same with the England game, which I turned off (got bored)) and went out, expecting Japan to win. I return to find the score was 3-1 to the Aussies! HUH?

France 0-0 Switzerland
Hmm, well I had a feeling that the French fans would be expecting Zidane and Henry to do some magic today, but I've been hearing disappointing things about these two, so I was hopeful for Switzerland. That's right, I was rooting for the Swiss (it's in me blood). Frei had a few chances, and I really though the Swiss had the upper hand. It's a shame they didn't score in the second half like I hoped. Darn it. Also, I was peeved about the number of random bookings that Russian ref gave them (and France). I think it was Magnin who was following Henry (towards the Swiss goal, but to the right), and the ball was about to go off, so he tried to tackle Henry, then left him, and Henry slid off pitch, and then a minute or so later, the ref gave Magnin a yellow card (wtf?). High hopes for Switzerland later in the competition (at least they have 1 point).

Brazil 1-0 Croatia
Good game, I was rooting for the energetic Brazil, even though it really was pretty mediocre, but it was one of the most exciting games I've witnessed so far. The Croatians had a right crack at them, and I think the reason for the low score for the Brazilians was the result of this. The Croatians were a tricky bunch. Especially that ponce Kovac (forget which one, the one who got injured in the first half and went off) who was being a bit of a drama queen in the first half, but then were well behaved in the second half. Shame Ronaldo wasn't up to scratch, and Emerson was getting a bit wobbly. Kaka was my man of the match, and Ronaldinho had a few tries...

So remind me, who's playing tomorrow?

Brazil sort of faded a little in the second half, I thought that if Klasnic or Tudor had taken one of their chances it would have been a draw... Ronaldinho wasn't as impressive as he could have been, but a few of the favourites for this year just seem to be looking for 3 points from their opening game, as opposed to the performance side of things

Brazil will find it tough today as will France. Switzerland will put up a fight and have twice drawn with France in qualifying.

My predictions.
Brazil 2-0 Croatia
France 0-0 Switzerland
Well predicted. :)

I thought yesterday was the worst day so far in terms of the football played. Togo-S.Korea was very poor in the first half, picked up a bit in the second half but overall not a great game. And Togo lost. :(
France-Switzerland was boring and quite embarassing, if people think Sven is bad they should look at Domenech. Awful tactics, players didn't know what they were doing, arguing with each other, shit subs, there was nothing positive at all for France. Not particularly unexpected though.

Even the Brazilians couldn't light it up. They seemed content just to stroll around (not even that if you're Ronaldo) even before they scored. The Croations did well, should've got an equaliser in the second half really.
If I was Brazil manager I'd drop Ronaldo for Fred for the next game, and I'd play Adriano as an out and out striker as he seemed to be playing too deep yesterday, that's not what he's about.

Well... I think it's safe to say that Spain FINALLY have a squad that can try to win the World Cup. Their defence was disciplined, their midfield supported the attackers well and both Villa and Torres showed class for such young players

It means Poland are out..and Germany look almost certain to finish top. All we have to do is beat T&T, and avoid defeat against Sweden...then our second round will either be against Costa Rica or Equador.

I'm not being over-confident here, but that's a pretty soft tie for the last 16 of the World Cup...in fact, it's looking like rankings-wise, it'll be the easiest tie possible.

Abit of a pity, because I was looking forward to Germany v England :(

If Costa Rica beat Ecuador, then Poland beat Costa Rica by more than Costa Rica scored against Ecuador as well as more than the 2-0 Ecuador beat Poland by, then Poland are through.

I can't be arsed to read through what's been said already, but from what I've seen, England have been appalling.
The long ball's have mostly been dreadful, we can't run at people (except J. Cole and Lennon) and we don't play through midfield. I say drop Lampard and replace him with Carrick, he has done nothing useful. The reason for the long balls is Peter Crouch, and it's not entirely his fault. He has done some good stuff, but England needs to be alerted to the fact that just because we have a beanpole up front doesn't mean we have to constantly hoof it up there.

P.S. Fuck me sideways, 6-0 to the Argies

Great performance from Argentina - with Saviola, Mascherano and Cambiasso in particular having great games. Argentina played some great football, the best of the tournament, with the pinnacle being of course the 2nd goal - which personally I think is as good a goal than Carlos Alberto's, as it is more of a team goal, nearly every player touches the ball and the build up play was better.

If Argentina can keep producing football like that, they can certainly win the cup - they've been the most impressive team so far and with competition for places and great back up, there's alot of things going for them but in all honesty there defence hasn't really been under too much pressure yet. Ivory Coast did well against them and made a few chances but they haven't played a top class side yet and knockout football is completely different. Can't wait for the Holland - Argentina game now. :D

With that elbowing incident though...I saw it, and it was disgracefull.

If FIFA really want to start setting examples, the dirty bastard should be banned for the rest of the World Cup. Things like that have no place in football, and players won't stop until they are actually frightened of the punishment...missing one or two games won't put them off. Missing the World Cup...they'll think again.

It's not like a two-footed challenge...you can understand that sometimes, because sometimes in the heat of the moment, sometimes you feel you have to....but elbowing is a totally different ball-game. To elbow someone in the face, you have to consciously decide to be a dirty wanker.

Firstly, because I don't think they're going to top the group. I think they're going to draw or possibly even lose against the Czechs.

If that happens, they play Brazil. Italy aren't good enough to beat Brazil. I'd love it if they did, obviously, but I don't rate them enough.

Secondly...if they avoid Brazil and finish top, they still have to get past Australia (Probably) and France. Australia will have no pressure on them if they are in the Second Round, because they have already done better than everyone thought, and teams like that are very dangerous. France haven't turned it on yet, but if they want to, they can play pretty bloody well.

All in all, I can't see Italy getting that far. I rate France above them, so either way, they're going to have to get past better teams in my eyes.

Brazil will not be given any space and time, Italy will be solid, and with Toni and Gilardino they will cause Brazil's backline problems.

Italy (and any other decent team) wwould/will beat France if they get through the group stage. The way they're playing now is what their team is now. Domenech is a crap coach, the squad is aging, divided, and certain personalities are too big for their boots (*cough* Henry *cough*) and others have way too much influence. Zidane basically picks the side. You're living in 98-2000 if you think France are still a good side.

Ukraine's keeper is a very scary man o_O.

just a quick note on the commentators/pundits

i am unimpressed by most of them and Pay Pay Okocha is a fucking embarrassment. sort it out; get rid of motson, lawrenson and the other twats and replace with someone a bit better.

the only thing is i cant think of many good commentators at present!

Steve Wilson is alright, seems to get stuck with the crap games while John "senile" Motson and Jonathan "annoying" Pearce get the good ones. Motson should've retired instead of Barry Davies. :(

Also I hope Marcel Desailly crushes Ian Wright's head in between his mighty hands. Leonardo is a good pundit, as is Strachan. O'Neill is decent.

Everything about ITV's football coverage is awful.

I think Italy will move on.

Czech did not impress me in the Ghana game. And honestly, against the US, they got lucky. First half the US was putting it to them but couldn't get a break.

Disagree'd.

I don't rate Italy that highly. They vunrable alol over the pitch, and it's already been shown. They have a good team, and they could go a long way, but I can't see it. One of the big teams always falters, and i'd bet my house on it being Italy this time around.

France are one of those team, that unless you break down, can be extreamly dangerous. They still have class raging through their team, and Henry is afterall one of the best strikers to ever play in England. When it comes to the knockout stages, and games turn more tactical and slow-paced, France will shine. They'll ultimatly go out to the Argies anyway, as will Italy if they go far.

France are like England, they can't kill games off. Brazil's major weakness is their back line and goalkeeper. Italy aren't firing on all cylinders at the moment. To be honest, Brazil will beat France or Italy, provided France get through :p

Klose for Golden Boot? I damn well hope so, I put money on it - and it's paying off. :D

Germany have this game in control. They seem to have grown in confidence day by day.

Looking like we're going to avoid germany then. A draw is a definate possibility against Sweden, but we shouldn't be losing to them.

Either way though, i'm not fussed. We have to beat them eventually anyway.

at this stage I'd put my money on Torres over Klose to get the golden boot. I reckon spain may finally stop underachieving

More proof, if even needed. If Scotland are cheering you on, you might as well not bother turning up :D

Now you're screwed, England! I've got money on you winning!

Looks to me like Owen is out for a while with that one...he can't even move...

Yeah, doesn't look good for Owen. To be honest though, he's been a shadow of his former self for weeks, and maybe it's a blessing...whos to say he won't carry on misfiring the entire tournie?

Doesn't matter really, we where gunna go 4-5-1 after this game anyway, I reckon.

Oh..and..

COLE YOU BEAAUTTTYYY!!

Stunning goal. Stunning.

We haven't been brilliant, but we've had to reshuffle alot. Half time is welcome, so we can get it sorted out.

Rooneys looked VERY dangerous...nearly scored a Gaza-96' -ish goal.

And at the risk of sounding controversial... Hargreaves has been ruddy great.

It looked like it was such a severe twist that he's torn his cruciate ligaments. Thats a fair few months out ¬.¬

He might have been lucky and just twisted it, but it didn't look it.

ouch!

something is working better, and I think the key is that lampard is allowed to go forward. I'd much rather see carrick than hargreaves in the DM position, but the system has worked so far

... that and Joe Cole has been AWESOME

now this is where it all goes tits up after half time now I've said that an tb has money on us :p

I don't think it's Lampard - It's Cole. Cole has been outstanding, and has been the startpoint og nearly every move.

Absolutly brilliant preformance from him so far. Him, Roo, Becks, Lamps and Hargreaves have been excellent, but Cole really has been the catalyst.

Gerrard would, IMO, do a better job though. However...with Owen out, the problems solved....4-5-1, with BOTH in attacking midfield... Hargreaves hopefully playing this well....and we're a MUCH MUCH MUCH better team.
