Me went for a walk.
(Damn b3ta taking up my bandwidth)
Broke my bike, so I was walking to work this morning. Was so lovely and sunny, so I was playing with my IR filter on the way. Definately need a tripod to get proper results, but managed to get this just handheld.
(shutter speeds between 2 and 4 seconds, F8.0 (whoops, forgot to turn camera of Aperture priority...) and stucked together using photostitch)
i love that pic bethie, very serene. And yours is marvellous fick. hurrah for ir

Don't know why, but you aren't the only one. Seems some people just can't, not sure if it's intentional or a bit of a bug somewhere. Any Mods care to clarify?

Lovely first IR pic there fick!
If you're using the R72 filter, then it's totally opaque so autofocus wont work, because it can't see anything ;)
I'm suprised you managed to get that with just a 2-4s shutter speed
I have to usually use at least a 20" shutter speed :(
When I was at canon hall today I was going to do some IR, but I really couldn't be bothered carrying my hefty tripod around with me ;)
Took this one outside the flat yesterday though :)

Yup, tis R72. When I've dabbled a bit before the shutter speeds have been longer, but today was really sunny. In that panorama the sun is just on the left hand side, quite low in the sky.
The focus thing seems strange though, I hadn't expected to it to work but in some of the shots it was claiming to have succesfully focused.
And I wasn't expecting to be able to see much on the viewfinder, but what I was seeing was not far removed from the end results. Hopefully it will be nice and sunny at weekend so I can play a bit more, rather than just taking a few snaps.

Wish I could help you kebab? but I am a happy snapper, i use a digital camera and (sadly) it does all that stuff for me :(
The only thing I can think of that may help is to try and capture the light's reflection off dust or something and try and have a contrasting background so it shows up better (probably a stupid thing to say but I had to try :) )
Anyway

Have ypu tried a polarizer filter? Try turning it to accentuate the light you are trying to film, instead of blocking it.

Nope, Paddington. I wanted to get a few piccies at Kings Cross and some on the underground, but I needed to get to Paddington to get my train so I didn't faff to much on the way there. As it happened I had plenty of time, so probably could have had a bit of a meddle along the way. Ah well.

ok then.
First question.
Developing, does the quality of your prints vary much depending on where you get them developed? I ask cos i just picked some photo's up and they are a lot more poo than i expected and a hell of a lot of them seem to be overexposed or something. It was one of them 24 hour jobs and i was wondering if this would make any difference

Yo SafetyHamster,
Yeah it can make a difference! and you might find that even if you take the same film to the same place you'll get different results due to
- different settings (of colour filters) on the machine,
- or the service (E.G. Jessops Dimond laser exposes for each neg seperatley, but standard service 'usually' takes an average for the whole film)
just take the film back and moan.... tell em they're over exposed and they should do em again for you for non of your pennies. (take proof you had em done there tho!)
Peace Out
EasyTiger
31-03-2004, 05:39 PM
Like he said, it does make a difference. Sometimes you can end up with colour casts on your images etc. Best thing is to complain though, then take them somewhere else. Professional developing places will almost always do a damn fine job :)

How much of my hard-earned pennies is that likely to cost?
Also. Problem number 2) i'd like to invest in a tripod. Will it make much difference to my pictures if i buy a cheap and cheerful one from jessops or is it advisable to fork out a bit more for a better one?
EasyTiger
31-03-2004, 10:13 PM
To be honest I think it could be as much if not cheaper than somewhere like boots, but I couldn't say. I've only sent off 5x4 sheets of film for developing, not a roll of film with prints. There should be some in Yellow pages or something though, if you give them a call they'll give you a price :)

It depends what you want out of a tripod. I bought a cheap one from jessops (i can't link it, but search for VELVTP815B) and it's great for what I want because it folds up nice and small and isn't too heavy. If you want a bit of a more sturdy one and are less concerned about portability you might want to look at the more pricey ones.
I wouldn't assume that just because something is cheap it isn't any good.
safetyhamster
01-04-2004, 10:54 AM
Good, that's exactly what i wanted to hear :D
Also, is it worth investing in a negative scanner? If i just get my negs developed it could work out cheaper in the long run, but what is the quality of the pics like?
EasyTiger
01-04-2004, 04:37 PM
I also have a tripod from jessops. It was £50 I think, and it's sturdy and pretty light.
I have a negative scanner, but they are pretty expensive to get a decent quality one. For the price and quality I went with the Minolta Dimage III Scanner, it scans at 2700dpi which is pretty high, and does a damn good job. I tried a jessops jobby before that, which was £100 less and said it scanned at 2700dpi also, but it was a massive pile of crap. Do your research beforehand on that kind of thing :)

01-04-2004, 05:31 PM
I got a wide angle - telephoto sigma lens :) Not a bad price. 28-200mm £146 from 1stcameras.com :) Only has a small range of apertures though...
My next purchase will be a lens for my newly acquired (as in today) Medium format RB67 :D
safetyhamster

EasyTiger
01-04-2004, 06:38 PM
that's a beautiful photo :)
No, to be honest, Canon lenses are good byt extremely expensive, and I think Sigma are really catching up and producing some great, good value lenses.
I have a 24mm sigma lens, which produces awesome quality photos. The 28-200mm is okay, but it isn't great when zoomed in full..

If it's only £40 then i'd probably go with the Canon to be honest. They are renound for good lenses, and although Sigma really are catching up (their new 12-24mm wide angle lens is apparently amazing), they are still a bit behind Canon.

Crocuses? Hmm...
If you're squeamish, don't look at the below pic as it's not very nice. It's a bee. Close up. With a tick [or some other bee-devouring insect].
edit - the bee's rear end is slightly out of focus as the autofocus on Macro is pants. But if you were trying to look for the bee's arse in the first place, you need help.
There you go, you've been warned.

I wouldn't blame the autofocus, it's just that you get really small depth of field with macro shots, so you can rarely get the whole thing in focus.
Much better than my bee photo, but I'm terrified of them (childhood thing) so didn't want to shove my camera (and hence me) too close!
beaded curtains and sticky window things make pretty shadows :)

Bit of a techical question again.
My dad has got an old Canon EOS 650 body (alas the lense had an unfortunate run in with an airport floor a while back) that I'm thinking about buying a lense for.
This is my first foray into 'real' cameras and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the vast amounts of different stuff available. Does anyone have any recomendations of places to look for lenses? What kind of things should I be looking for?
EasyTiger
04-04-2004, 05:59 PM
Well the first thing to remember is that you get a Lens to fit a Canon EOS camera :) Not Canon FD for example as they're two different types of Canon bodies.
As for lenses, they go from wide angle anything from 9mm (fisheye) to 28mm (standard wide angle). To telephoto anything from about 100mm to massive zoom like 1200mm.
Personally if you just wanted to purchase 1 lens, you could go for a 28-200mm or 28-300mm lens. This gives you wide angle up to telephoto. You can get Sigma and other brands like Tamron to fit the Canon bodies, which are cheaper than Canon lenses themselves. I recently bought a Sigma 28-200mm lens from www.1stcameras.com (could be .co.uk) for £146ish and it's pretty decent. They're also a good, cheap website.
I do also love my wide angle lenses though. I have a Sigma 24mm lens (fixed focal - no zoom) which is fantastic quality, and I got that off ebay for £127 I think.
Depends what kind of snaps you're thinking of doing really :)
P.S A canon EOS 5 camera is now mine :D I'm working at Jessops so got it much cheaper ;) It's second hand, but it is fantastic. Loads of features, and a good price. I'm now getting rid of my Nikon F65 with 2 lenses. (28-100mm) and (70-300mm) in case anyones interested?
