And this one was waiting in the garden, which has been busy growing while I've been away!

Comments welcome on the colour of this one. It was taken through a A-Daylight (85) filter, which makes everything look all warm and sunny. Bit of a funny story how I got it, my uncle had his old SLR out and all his filters were 58mm (as is his camera) but this one was 52mm. Must have shrunk in the wash! ;)

EasyTiger

Did you zoom in far?
In which case it probably had a telephoto effect on the image. A telephoto lens squashes things in the frame closer together giving the effect of them being close, when infact they could be several meters away from each other :)

Me too! :D And it's great that you can get them pretty cheaply on Ebay. I've had a few that are clearly really old by looking at the packaging but are still in near perfect condition for only a few quid.

I'm waiting for my Neutral Density one to arrive so I can have a dabble with long exposures.

Aaah. It was shots like that that made me want a neutral density filter, but when I got my ND4 from eBay the exposures still seemed really short 'on screen'. But I haven't had chance to try it out on proper moving things, so maybe they aren't as short as they may have seemed.

You can i'm sure! Just takes prior knowledge of what you need to do to get it :)

Which in this case, is basically a reasonably slow shutter speed, and a tripod :) Running water helps too ;)

I would have, but I didn't want to bump a 2 and a half month old thread. It's up to the top now, but at the time of my post it was many pages back.

Also, I thought the picture was quite fitting for the daily photo thread, on account of it being some photos I took earlier on in the day.

EasyTiger
19-04-2004, 03:11 PM
It was a good try smeagle :)
I would be naff at piecing photos together ;)

You posted it in the right place, though it would have fitted in widescreen pics too. I understand your concern in bumping the thread, but it wouldn't really have mattered being that your photo was on topic :)

Fick
19-04-2004, 05:01 PM
Widescreen pics is one of those threads that keeps coming and going. I've bumped it a few times, I can't see any problem with doing so if you are posting a wide pic! Especially if it is really wide and would have difficulty fitting in Daily Photo.

As I mentioned somewhere in the Widescreen thread I've got a program called Photostitch that is pretty good at automatically merging pics.

If anyone wants a copy grab me and I can send it over.

It feels a bit strange.

I've got used to using the macro mode of my camera and sticking the lense as close to things as I can but now I'm playing with these close up filters I can get much closer by moving further away.

These are both taken with a +4 and +1 stacked.

This one is a bit of a ruler; these are the actual pixels showing about 5mm.

http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~pjh64/further-away-is-closer.jpg

While this one is my ever willing test subject, taken with 4sec exposure, ISO 50 and F8.0 (bit of an experiment with a few things, I wanted biggish DoF but low ISO to stop any granyness. The not great lighting added in made for a long shutter speed, but I had my tripod.).

http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~pjh64/PICT1547.jpg

I'd be interested if anyone can explain the strange colour tint round the edges, I've read about it somewhere before but can't quite remember what it is and how to stop it!

Comments and any general close up filter tips most welcome!

EasyTiger
22-04-2004, 08:17 PM
It's because of the filters, especially if you stack them. I think it's purple fringing, but it might not be.

I used to get it on images too. Not sure how you get rid of them though

More pics from this afternoon on my grand trip around Cambridge.

This one was taken in black and white with a R25A filter.

http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~pjh64/PICT1632.jpg

This one shows how the tourists try to punt, ie badly!

http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~pjh64/PICT1634.jpg

While this one shows how to it in a much more classy way!

http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~pjh64/PICT1648.jpg

I also had a play with my ND4 filter around a weir thingy by a lock, but it was really bright and my camera only goes to F8.0 so I couldn't really get short enough shutter speeds. This pic is the only one that really captures much motion but most of it is overexposed.

I'm going to pop them up on my shutterpoint later, but i'm not sure if I'll be able to get away with the first sepia one without tracking down the tourists and getting them to sign model releases! ;)

I really like the sepia though. Those sepia and B&W shots were done using my camera's built in colour modes not photoshop. Not sure if it makes any difference though!

It's when you compare those punting shots to this colour one that you really see the impact of the colour. This one just looks a bit like a holiday snap!

I have a question for ET also, how did you get that effect with the water? I am guessing shutterspeed but I am probably wrong.

Slightly off topic I know but I am in Bilsthorpe at the moment (just outside Mansfeild) and was wondering if there was anything paticularly interesting to photograph in this neck of the woods apart from, er, woods that is :)

EasyTiger
26-04-2004, 07:58 AM
Yes it is just the shutterspeed :)
I use a neutral density filter too though, because this reduces the amount of light hitting the film. In this case, because it was sunshine, I had to use that and stop the aperture down to about 32, then had a 1/4s shutter speed :)
I could really have done with a 1/2s or 1s shutter speed though :/

I took a bunch of pictures when my Mom and I went down to the Isle of Wight, Friday night.

These pictures were taken Friday/Saturday... the Sunsets were last night!

http://www.star-inn-geddington.com/~seraph/wight5
These are the chairlifts we went on to get to the beach, in order to see The Needles!

http://www.star-inn-geddington.com/~seraph/wight4
This is to the left of The Needles. Veryyy clear water, and amazingly high cliffs!

http://www.star-inn-geddington.com/~seraph/wight6
This is a picture of The Needles, if you can squint just right :p I apologise, my digital camera does not have zoom or anything fancy!

http://www.star-inn-geddington.com/~seraph/wight2
This is as we were just coming out of East Cowes (Leaving Isle of Wight on the Ferry), with all the sailboats tucked in for the night.

http://www.star-inn-geddington.com/~seraph/wight
The ultimate beauty! (Taken from the Ferry's top deck)

It was beautiful there! (Even tho we were told its a place for old people AFTER we went there.. heh :p)

a DL1000?

I'm not really that creative, I just see something I like and want to try and recreate a similar effect :P

For that one I used some black velvet as the background, set up my camera on my pod and used an IR cable release to set it off, then used the pilot on the back of the flash gun, to flash it at the reflector during the long shutter speed :)

You might want to have a look at Shutterpoint (http://www.shutterpoint.com/). You have to pay for an account but you can upload photos and get lots of feedback as well as sell photos!

Mine has paid for itself quite comfortably. There is a link to my pics in my sig, and EasyTiger's are on there somewhere as well.

Yeah shutterpoint is good, but don't expect to make loads of money on there or anything.
I've managed to sell 4 photos now, but that's over a 9 month period or something.. and they were only $20 and $25 each.

thank you sir. i was most happy with the way that turned out. i only had one go at it. i'm trying to remember everything i learned about composing a picture. it's been over 10 years since i last attempted to take more than a goofy snapshot. it really gives me a boost to know someone noticed.

Was going to add a border to make it look all nice and fancy. Only problem was that I couldn't find the correct CD for the program.

Messed with the colour settings a bit.

Went to Waddington Air show yesterday.. I have woes with my camera that I need to sort out, but managed a few okay photos.

They are here (http://www.jem-online.co.uk/images/airshow)

It's a shame the light wasn't better that day, but I call it "Nature vs. Paranoia"

oh ren, that is a great pic. i really like it's a bit dull(not the right wrd exactly) like the bleak grey sky and the harsh barbed wire are draining the colour away from the flowers. (yes this is why i suck at poetry, i am just so cliched and obvious)

et. some of those were absolutely spectacular. i love airshows. i really liked the ones head on the aircraft like pic 35 i think it was. the big plane looks so imposing and menacing and dark against the blue sky behind it.
there was also the one with the cool black and white pros that was just fab. i only looked at a few so far because i'm at work, but those really popped.

Thanks hun :) It was a fun day apart from the mishaps. I have dust on my 300D sensor, and have had to order this special bottle of fluid and pads in order to clean it. If it goes wrong, then my camera will be buggered :(
