Here's one for you. I took this from the stern of a yacht. The boat, and all the others in the area ( it was a parade ) had lots of light strings tied on the rails and all over them. I don't know why the pictures came out like this. You can tell I didn't move the camera, as the flag on the right is nice and clear. I was using a Nikon CoolPix 880, with a 2X lens, and most settings on auto. The only thing I did to this pic was convert to .jpg from .tif, and shrink the size.
M*O*S*H
20-10-2003, 09:55 AM
Afraid to say it but ..... you did move the camera .... the falsh froze the flag, as it needed light to be seen, so after the initial flash the flag would not have produced a trail. if you look at the lights on the boat ahead you can see the trail left when the camera moved, which matches the linear flow of of the other trails.
Still a pretty, and trippy, pretty trippy image :)

I don't think I moveed the camera, but I could be wrong. I took a bunch of pictures that night, and they all had this same weird look. Here's one that shows the light streaks going in every direction. I don't think that moving the camera would do this. The light goes in several directions, and the camera was set up for a 200 speed exposure. Again, all I did was convert the format and resize, no alteration to the immage.

Already ordered the Nikon 5700. The reason it was so much ($2000, U.S.) was that it has a very complete acessory kit. Pelican 1500 hard case, 1.5X telephoto, 0.8X wide angle, 1X, 2X, 4X macro and adapter, UV filter, polarizer, 512 meg Lexar memory, external flash, tripod, leather soft case, etc. More stuff I can't remember. Everything is high quality, like Nikon lenses, and with the whole thing together I think it is a good deal. I've tried to take pics with cheap lenses, and all you get is garbage. What I really want is the new Nikon D2H - SWEET! It has a wireless network adapter, so the camera can download pics to your computer while you are shooting. Just bring a laptop with you and you never even have to swap out memory cards.

Here's a weird pic. That huge orange thing is a rubber glove that is normally used in nuclear work. The question came up at work today 'How strong are thede things, anyway?', so we blew one up with an air hose untill it exploded. You can just see the top of my head behind the blue set of drawers with a jacket on top. I'm 5'11", and I was stooped over a bit, but as you can see, the glove got HUGE, and when it let go it sounded like a rifle shot.

I wasn't meaning digi SLR over digicam, I was meaning straight 35mm SLR over any digicam ;)
For convenience digicams are great, but SLRs produce better quality photos, the batteries last shed loads longer, and I just find them easier to handle and use :)
I'm still torn... Do I spend the next student loan on clothes, food and rent or do I buy myself a nice new camera? The dillemma...

I've decided i'm selling my Minolta Dimage 5 soon, and purchasing the lovely Minolta Dimage A1 :>
I would go for the Canon 300D, but frankly I can't afford, and it only comes with an 18-55mm lens. The Dimage has 7x optical zoom lens and proper macro. Plus the dimage is £200 cheaper, so in my price range.
*drool* You will be mine soon :> (http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/CatalogueItem_14260.html)
Was playing with a friend of mines Dimage 5 yesterday afternoon taking a load of rowing photos. Seemed mighty nice.
Still don't know if I can afford a new camera though, might be worth investigating second hand.

stole me dads canon ixus and went on a big photo hunt for my art project. my town now has a light source under the bridge i think that i hadn't noticed until now. anyway here it is.
I have a question to anyone with camera experience. Is it possible to take a picture of clouds at night time. my attempts were unsuccesfull and the only ones that became slightly clear were with no flash and alot of photoshop. can it be done?
edit: the icicle one is lovely, really nice. i am going snoboarding soon and we always go on the most amazing trips. i have been doing it for about 7 years and we get the lift and then walk up for an hour or so and then you hav fresh powder that noone has touched. the scenes are beautiful and i hope to get a great deal of photos from those.
EasyTiger
27-11-2003, 02:00 PM
For clouds, and if it's very dark, you need to have a long shutter speed, and no doubt a tripod too to keep the camera still.
I don't know if you can manually set the camera you have up. If not, maybe if you set it up on a tripod, turn the flash off, and hit the shutter button it will manage to pick a long enough shutter speed for it...

27-11-2003, 06:33 PM
Long shutter speeds .... of moving clouds could (would) be a problem, unless you're looking at the moon .... for which you'd need a very fast shutter speed, or small aperture.
Other than that, a great big whopping lightsource (probably around 3,000,000 Watts, or maybe strong light polution) pointing up at the clouds would help
clouds at night = might as well be taking an out of focus picture of fog.
Night photography is my thing, but if anyone can prove me wrong, i'll accept it

Well, I'm back online. Some nut got drunk and decided that the proper speed to make a turn in a residential neighborhood was 3X ( he was going about 75 miles per hour!) the posted speed limit, and hit a telephone pole so hard with his car that it moved down the street 3 houses. The shock on the lines broke wires over 1 mile away, and fried the DSL box I was hooked up to. Yay. I got my new Nikon 5700 that day, but I had no batteries charged to take a picture of the scene. Yay X2. Plus I was without power for 2 days, with no heat, and I had to run the fish tanks off of my computer's U.P.S. to keep them alive. Yay, AND Woo.
Here's a pic with the my new toy. I didn't have to do ANYTHING to this except resize it, no photoshopping.
By the way, I'm surprised that no one said anything about that glove I posted a while back.

Hey, M*O*S*H* - yea, it's a 5700. If anyone out there is thinking of getting one, I'll say this: You will NOT be disappointed IF YOU READ THE MANUAL. It is a very nice camera, and the picture quality is just as good as a friend's Olympus E-20, but this thing is much more complicated than the last camera I had. I'm working on getting a bit better depth of field with close ups and macro. You can see the fish's lips are in focus, but it goes out of focus quickly.:nana:
Death got it good with that one! Nice, long depth. What are you using?

I would love a macro lens for my Nikon or (soon to be mine) Canon. Shame they're like at least £400 2nd hand :(

Check eBay, Easy T. You might be able to get a good deal. I've had some good luck there.
After ET mentioned it t'other day I've been pondering Shutterpoint, which made me start playing with the different filesize settings on my camera.
This was one of the pics I took while experimenting, and I just liked it. And yes, I was supposed to be working instead of playing with my camera...

My friend got his interview in a magzine today and he was quite chuffed, he asked me to scan the photo bit so he could send it to his sponsors and others for showing off etc..
anyway the bottom photo was really good ah thought so, I'm gonna post it. they were by Kieth Bridle so yay for him I guess.

One more of my cats, Kabuki. I was playing arround with the flash on this one. With the camera's built in flash blocked, and an external flash pointed straight up at the ceiling, I didn't get any eye flash. Cats' eyes are REALLY bad for giving horrible light up with flashes. Not too bad, eh?
Isn't eBay great? My wearbear arrived this morning!
ROAR!
I'm turning into a bit of a photo thread whore at the mo, but it's been snowing!

Great shots. I'm going to take a trip up into the mountains in a few days, and I'll post the pics I get. . . And there WILL be snow, or else!

Someone got me a cable release for my 5700! WOO! This thing is great. You can set it to take pictures continuously, at any interval from 2 minutes to 24 hours. Must play now.

I have my canon 300D! :D
It's absolutely -gorgeous-!
It can do a burst of 4 shots in 1 second... and the ISO ranges from 100-1600, with little noise at 1600 :D
A sample picture from yesterday ;) Taken with the 18-55mm lens that comes with it :)

My truck is broke, so I'm not able to get up to the mountains for a few days:mad: , so I spent a little while working on this one. I had to load the bullet with very little powder to keep the speed down so that it wouldn't fragment, then I shot it into a rotten log. I have it sitting on a piece of sandpaper.
