View Full Version : Truly Unique Vocalists

I want a list of vocalists with truly unique voices. Odd, out of the ordinary, just unique.
Whether or not their music is good or bad; no being biased because you don't like the songs they sing, in this thread it's the singing that counts.
OK, beginning of the list:
Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)
Jaz Colman (Killing Joke)
David Alezander (InMe)
Jonathon Davis (KoRn)
Tom Waits
Now, your turn.

Jack White. You know his voice when you hear it.
Liam Gallagher. Very defined accent and tone.

The lead singer from Polyphonic Spree (the name escapes me)
He's awesome... so happy, but it's wierd because he can't really sing that well haha

Aretha Franklin. Can't beat a bit of Aretha. Her voice is very distinctive.
Chaka Chan. You can tell when she's singing backing. Her voice is so obvious.
Old skool! :D

Why havnt anyone said James Hetfield. Theres a unique voice. Its not unkown, but everyone knows who it is when u hear the voice.
I would also say Mike Patton (mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, Faith no more, General Patton and the executioners and many more.)
Kate Bush
I could also namedrop some swedish unique voices, but you guys wouldnt be able to know who these guys/gals are.

Do it anyway. I don't know most of these artists, but I'm going to find some songs by all of them to see how good they really are
I can't believe I left Bjork off the original list...

Ok. But some of them aint that good. Like Thomas DiLeva, or M.A. Numinen(could be counted as a finnish vocalist) These 2 are the most unique dudes.
Some vocalists I forgot.
Mark Knopfler
Mark Araya (Slayer)
Danny Elfman (Oingo Boingo)

Mark Araya (Slayer)
Lol, you mean Tom Araya :p
Some people may disagree but James Hetfield, he has a truley uniqe voice, able to project an intune yet hard and 'gruf' voice. I'd also say Zack De La Rocha (RATM) his rapping has a lot of attitude and agression.

Well, The whole Metallica is almost legends, but Kirk dont rule on guitars. Theres lots of people better then him and he seems only to play his special "kirk-solo"-thingy. But his good at what he does and everyone knows when Kirk is the soloist. Fast and lots of tapping.

There's 'unique' and then there's 'crap'.
I was going to put Bellamy, but thought he was to derivative of Radiohead's frontman Tom Yorke.
Though Muse is one of my favorite bands.
And no flaming each others choices please. David Alezander's voice is very unique, though the songs he sing are all a bit boring
EDIT: ARRRGHH! I said very unique! Feel free to stone me to death with stale French bread.

Irvine Black

Danny Filth - cradle of filthDanny Filth's voice is in no way original, every black/death/goth metal band sounds the same in my opinion, and as for Cobain, I've heard Alice in Chains songs that contain vocals quite similar to his.
As for truly unique vocals...Matt Bellamy? At least, I haven't heard anybody do anything similar

well at least they have vocals not like that drum and bass shite. plus they dont all sound the same, compare Trivium to Bring Me The Horizon, there is one hell of a difference.

I'm also suggesting Guyom from GTI. Listen to This (http://gtibrutal.free.fr/cd/cd/track8.mp3), then be shocked that there's only one vocalist in that band. I've never heard one person flit between styles like that.
