Some intelligent soul has decided to only allow Internet Explorer at college. It's not that its the only browser that connects, but the only one that will load. When I try to load Opera it cancels the process.
Is there a sneaky way to get round it? hehehe...

Try loading Firefox from a USB memory stick plugged into the PC, if you can.

Which is here (http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/), if you didn't know.

If it kills the process then you could try just renaming firefox's .exe executable, as it may well identify processes by name.
Not sure if this would cause other problems though.

I tried using Portable Firefox from a USB key at college because I couldn't stand using IE any more, but it couldn't connect - most likely they've blocked interweb traffic from everything but IE. Hopefully they won't have done the same at your college.
If you're dead-set on Opera, try OperaUSB (http://www.obermair.net/opera/operausben.htm) (not tried it myself)

My school has a proxy that you have to change in the FF connection settings. Best way to find it is to force it to give a web server error, can't remember how I achieved this now but if you can make it give a connection timeout or something in IE it should tell you the proxy.

Ooh yes, I seem to remember seeing the proxy details on an IE error page a while ago. I did think it might've been because we're behind a proxy, but I wasn't sure how to get its details. Sneaky. Thanks, I'll give it a shot on Monday.

Either'll do. I just can't live without tabs now..

I seem to remember FireFox having a setting to auto-detect your proxy settings for your network, or something.
Not sure if it works though, as I've never tried it.

If I was to rename it "Internet Explorer", would the world explode?

The world, no. The computer, possibly as Windows OS relies on part of IE's code to work properly.

Yes.
In Tools > Options > Connection, you set it to "Auto-Detect proxy settings for this network".
Once that's done, it should work just like IE with you just entering your network UN/PW to log on.
EDIT: This is how Firefox now owns my school music department :p

I tried using Portable Firefox at my school but it didn't work, automatic or not. :( Any hints would be most appreciated - I can't be doing with Internet Explorer.
