This is your mission, should you choose to accept it.

I need to sort out my missus's PC so it can play region one dvds as well as region two dvds. She's got an iQon PC that she bought from tesco :(
I know its more than likely gotta be a firmware update (hax lols), but It'd be good to know:
1. How to find out make of the drive and then the firmware version.
2. How actually to do a firmware update on a DVD drive
3. Where to get said firmware update.
4. Is it gonna fubar her computer if i do it wrong
5. Can you get a already region free dvd drive (just in case its less hassle)

So yeah.
This message will self destruct on friday (the next time I get to see her with PC in tow)

PS. If its possible to do this to a mac as well, that'd be nice to know.

It's possible to be done with software, my Music Tech teacher (a Mac head) was saying that you change the region on Macs in the preferences window of the Apple DVD player software that ships with Mac OS X. However, you can only do it a certain amount of times so he downloaded some hax to counteract that.

No idea what he downloaded or from where or even if he was telling the truth, but if he is then it's a software thing. The DVD drive just reads the DVD regardless, then the software blocks it if the reading is a different region to what the software is set to accept.

OK, you need something like this:

DVD Region Killer (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Region_Killer)
or this
DVD43Free (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD43)

These are software that are supposed to deregion your DVD drive.

Alternatively, have a look at this forum (http://forum.rpc-1.com/index.php) where people post firmware hacks. These change the hardware itself and therefore have a much higher b0rk risk than a bit of software.

Have fun

AnyDVD is also a very good bet. I use it and it's leet kewl. Ah but the ones I found were freeware, saving you the bother of fighting through pr0n popups for the right haxx0r3d version - or buying it I suppose...

Google tells me that VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) supports regionfree DVD watchingisms on Macs.
