I noticed tonight when I logged onto gmail that it's slightly changed...

http://www.google.com/gmail/help/images/logo.gif --> http://mail.google.com/mail/help/images/googlemail.gif

And when I went to see if the help section had any info on why it's changed, they hadn't updated it (the old gmail logo is still there).

So, any thoughts/comments/chewing on this?

Hmmm...It appears they have decided to change the name, for some reason or another...

Aha, just found this (http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en-GB/googlemail.html)

It's changed because of the trademark dispute over the name "gmail" in the UK.

Google aren't assigning @gmail.com addresses to UK users any more (it's @googlemail.com instead) and existing users will be able to use both in the interim. They don't know whether use of @gmail.com will be discontinued in the UK yet. Link forthcoming posted while I was typing :)

Looks like Germans will have @googlemail, but they changed all of it anyway.

They're not changing existing addresses, only issuing these new ones.

They have said that it _may_ be come to changing email addresses permanently, depending on the outcome of the dispute. I'm going to be supremely annoyed if I lose @gmail.com.

So will I :\ It's so much easier to say "gmail"! Half the benefit of Gmail is that you can easily say "at gmail dot com" out loud. "Googlemail" is much more clunky. Plus, unless they put in a nice redirect to the "new address", I'll have to re-tell everyone my address. I really hope that doesn't happen; it'd be so annoying.

Gah, I hate trademark disputes :\

edit: Oh good, it would appear that (after now having properly read the articles :p) existing users will be able to keep their @gmail.com addresses.

Like there are going to be any more new gmail users. Everyone's got it twice already :p

EDIT! OMG I had a revolutionary idea that no one's ever thought of!

Why not, right... stay with me on this. Right. Why not just pretend you're in the US!? :o !!!
