Dude, when you think you maybe want to explore more "weird" parts of heavymetal you should try out Fantômas, Tomahawk or maybe(the one I advice you to listen to) Mr. Bungle! Maybe you have heard about those bands already, but if not, you should really check them out!
What got you into metal? And what way have your taste developed in? Me, I started out with Metallica and got myself more deep into Trash with Slayer and listen to other bands. Not good bands though, but Metallica and Slayer are great trash-bands. I heard Iron Maiden through my bro, same with Helloween and Dreamtheater. I listened to Skindred during a periode and then Korn and Slipknot. But before Korn and Slipknot came Mr. Bungle. Though I hated them at first. But after a month I took up the record again and found out that I liked them. And they got me to search out more weird bands like them. Like Fantômas and Tomahawk, which Ive already told you about. I found them becouse the singer sings in both of those bands.
Btw. You should also try to listen to Naked City. They play trash/grind/countrywestern/latin/swing kind of jazz. I mean, they mix everything and switch genre during a blink of an eye. But Naked City can be listened to if you liked Mr. Bungle and Fantômas and wants to hear something extreme.

My parents were actually kind enough to bring me up on niorvana from a very early age, generally this kinda music is in my blood, my dad, a huge metallica fan got me into that, when i first listened to load i nearly died with amazment, when i heard master of puppets i did die of amazment.
I'm not actually sure how I eneded up liking true thrash metal, I think kill 'em all helped, then i kinda moved on a bit and listened to Chimaira, and thought they were amazing, and then found killswitch and then i developed a nice taste for thrash, I wanna get into the likes of Machine head, and I should be seing Mastadon on the 1st of December (lucky me :D).
But nonetheless I go back still to my nirvana, my foo fighters, queens of the stoneage, grunge is still the thing that got me into decent music, so i cant forget it.
I've not heard of those bands, i'll have to check them out.

My most recent metal-moment was when my friend played me "Tears Don't Fall" by Bullet For My Valentine the other day, and I loved it, then I bought "The Poison" and loved that. It's an awesome album. For some reason, the songs all remind me of walking to school in the rain...
Korn and Slipknot
If bands like Rancid and Smashing Pumpkins were art they'd be like this:

Wow dude. Then I dont want to know what Mr. Bungle would look like.
Btw. Why be mean about other peoples taste of music? I never said that your shit suck. Have I? You should open up to other kind of music dude! Otherwise you might end up like an old cranky bastard with no life besides being mean and hated. Maybe I'm using bad examples here. But hey! Atleast I'm not telling you what kind of shit I think that Smashing is. Ops, now I did. Not that I wont call it music, its great sometimes, but I'm no fan of it. And not being a fan of something wont give me the power to say thats its not a "band". It is, so stop your mean attitude towards other peoples tast in music and open up. But if you still wanna talk about how shitty you think Korn is, go to the cheese bin.

K. So I'm not very into metal. But I discovered something awesome a coupleof weeks ago...
Funk metal (http://music.download.com/2001-8587_32-0.html?tag=nav_dir&). Haven't tried too many bands on that page but from what I have heard it's rather good. Kinda like some weird 70s revival with electric guitars and feedback. Yeah.

The other guys just fool around on stage, teasing he guitarist by acting gay around him. All their songs is about dragons and fantasy(except one that is about big lizards with wings and they can breath fire). Anyways, I just got surprised that you suggested them, not my kind of metal.

Well, I refuse to open my tastes to anything that involves a drum machine, and A stupid illeducated chav 'singing' complete shite down a microphone, (for the record i'm talking about R+B) but i will open my music tastes to others, I like my punk (proper punk no not you american sad acts who think your punk when you're not - although having said that green day do have some amazing stuff), sex pistols, stiff little fingers, towers of london, ya know i'm not just pure metal, I mean I listen to feeder!!!

Lol. Thx RobW, I really wanted that minus. Seems like you didnt read everything I wrote. I said that Smashing Pumpkins are alright but not my favs. The part that it was shit was just a joke, I was freaking around with it. Lol, it all makes me laugh.
Oh, and Dream Evil are just doing it to have fun and fool around with it. I didnt say that it sucks, just that they are funny. Nothing I would listen to besides on conserts where they are warmup band. Ive seen them lots of times, so your minus for that and for me having fun about Smashing are incorrect. But hey, I'm no paraniod dude, I dont really care.
BTW. (Hope you read this part RobW) I dont wanna be your enemy or something. I was just fooling around with everyting I said in my post after yours with the pics. I did get the point and I maybe replyed to it with a too "seriouse" answere. Must stop with that.
Oh, I wont give you a minus, not that it would hurt you in any way. I mean like in rep way.
Hmmm metal... Faith No More, Deftones (not reaallllly metal but kinda), Tool (as if with Deftones), Soulfly, Sepultura, Strapping Young Lad, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Machine Head, Pantera, Skinlab, Opeth, Blood Duster (aus), Psycroptic (aus), Fear Factory, (early) KoRn, Brujeria (mexico), CoF (seem to have gone a bit sellout-ish but good anyway), heaps more that I can't think of at the moment, plus all the classics (Iron Maiden, Slayer, Black Sabbath etc.)

I'm not in to this whole 'classification of music' stuff (I'm too old), but some bands that I like which may be considered metal are:
Therapy? (Especially teethgrinder)
Deftones
IRON MAIDEN (it takes a real fan to listen to the whole of 'Rime of the ancient mariner')
Biffy Clyro (Not really sure what genre they are, they bend a bit between then all)
Metallica (My favourite band before St. Anger)
Laibach are good as well.

As far as metal is concerned, i cant get enough metal. There are some bands i cant stand, like Bullet for my Valentine ( I dont like the english accents!), but most i find ok. Greatest metal act of all time has got to be Iron Maiden.

I like a bit of Emporer and In Flames every now and again. Huge fan of Nightwish, if you'd class them as metal, although with the lead singer being sacked, not so sure if they'll still be as good. Inkubus Sukubus, again, same with Nightwish, not sure if you'd class them as metal but still a good group

Huge fan of Nightwish, if you'd class them as metal, although with the lead singer being sacked, not so sure if they'll still be as good.
Tarja's sacked!? Where did you find this out?
EDIT:
Dear Tarja,
It`s time to choose whether the story of Nightwish ends here or whether it will still continue an undetermined period of time. We`ve been working with this creation for 9 years and we are not ready to give up yet. Nightwish is a way of life, something to live for, and we`re certain we can`t let it go.
Equally certain is the fact that we cannot go on with you and Marcelo any longer. During the last year something sad happened, which I`ve been going over in my head every single day, morning and night. Your attitude and behavior don`t go with Nightwish anymore. There are characteristics I would never have believed to see in my old dear friend.
People who don`t talk with each other for a year do not belong in the same band.
We are involved in an industry where the business-side of things is a necessary evil and something to worry about all the time. We are also a band which has always done music from the heart, because of friendship and the music itself. The mental satisfaction should always be more important than money! Nightwish is a band, it`s an emotion.
To you, unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with those emotions have become much more important. You feel that you have sacrificed yourself and your musical career for Nightwish, rather than thinking what it has given to you.
This attitude was clearly shown to me in the two things you said to me in an airplane in Toronto: ”I don`t need Nightwish anymore.” and ”Remember, Tuomas, that I could leave this band at any time, giving you only one day`s warning in advance”.
I can`t simply write any more songs for you to sing.
You have said yourself that you are merely a ”guest musician” in Nightwish. Now that visit ends and we will continue Nightwish with a new female vocalist.
We`re sure this is an equally big relief to you as it is for us. We have all been feeling bad long enough.
You told us that no matter what, the next Nightwish album will be your last one. However, the rest of us want to continue as long as the fire burns. So there`s no sense in doing that next album with you, either.
The four of us have been going over this situation countless times and we have realized that this is the thing we want to do in life. It´s all we can do. In December 2004, in Germany, you said that you will never tour again for more than two weeks at a time. You also said that we can forget about U.S. and Australia because the fees and the sizes of venues are too small.
In interviews I`ve mentioned that if Tarja leaves, that would be the end of the band. I understand that people will think this way. Nightwish is, however, a scenery of my soul and I`m not ready to let go because of one person. A person who wants to focus her creativity to somewhere else, a person whose values don`t match mine.
We were never bothered by the fact that you didn`t participate in writing/arranging songs, you never in 9 years came to rehearse the songs with us before going to the studio. Not the fact that while on tour you always wanted to fly, separately from us with your husband. Not the fact that you are an undisputable front image of the band.
We accepted and felt ok about everything except greed, underestimating the fans, and breaking promises. It was agreed by the five of us that Nightwish would be the priority in everything that we do during 2004-2005. Still so many things were more important to you. The ultimate example being the already sold-out show in Oslo, which you wanted to cancel because you needed to rehearse for your solo concerts, meet frieds and go to the movies. Those were the words Marcelo used in an e-mail explaining the cancellation. This being just one example of so many. I couldn`t think of a worse way of being selfish and dismissing our fans.
Nightwish is a way of life and a job with many obligations. To each other and to the fans. With you we can`t take care of those duties anymore.
Deep within we don`t know which one of you drove us to this point. Somehow Marcelo has changed you from the lovely girl you were into a diva, who doesn`t think or act the way she used to. You are too sure of your irreplaceableness and status.
It`s obvious that you blame your stress and misery on us four. And you think we don`t respect or listen to you. Belive us; We have always had the uppermost respect towards you as a wonderful vocalist and as a friend. And very often during the past couple of years the plans were made according to your decisions only. You were always the only one who wanted more money from the shows.
This ”compensation and more money from everything” –attitude is the fact that we are most disappointed of!
We wish that from now on you will listen to your heart instead of Marcelo. Cultural differences combined with greed, opportunism and love is a dangerous combination. Do not wither yourself.
This decision is not something we are especially proud of but you gave us no choice. The gap between us is too wide. And the decision is made by us four unanimously. We are beyond the point where things could be settled by talking.
All the best for your life and career,
Tuomas
Emppu Jukka Marco

Ok. Then I get your point. Well, Dream Evil are to me as it is to you, a funny band. Sure there are lots of bands out there singing about dragons and are seriouse about it. Dream Evil just have a laugh about it. :) That was what ccame to my mind when I heard them doing the talk between the songs. They sure are funny. So where have you seen them? Thought they wasnt that big outside of sweden, not that they are big here either. I've only seen them as warmup band or as a early band on metal festivals.
BillytheBubble: Dimmu Borgir aint my fav band, not into that new blackmetal scene. In Flames was one of my fav bands during the swedish highschool. But only for half a year or something like that.(Got Jester Race and Whoracle). Have only heard Borknagars drummer on some weird/fast drum video. DAMN HIS FAST!
Btw. Think you should check out Meshuggah. Great band with lots of weird rythm changes. Brutal Death metal when its best!

TARJA'S BEEN SACKED!?!?!?!?!?! *in shock* Oh my fricken god!!! Well, actually... it doesnt come as much of a surprise. If anyone reads a couple of issues back in Kerrang! then the bands mood to eachother explains it all, as it says 'As Tarja is called in to do her individual shoots, the rest of the band leave without saying goodbye to her'
:( Oh well. They've only been my favourite band for about a year.
EDIT: To be quite honest, Tuomas is right about her attitude to the band. She keeps on saying that 'she never liked heavy metal in the first place' and 'Nightwish isnt my only goal in life' and to be completely honest Ville Valo of HIM was right in saying that Tarja's attitude when she's IN a metal band to say that she hates metal is 'totally unnatural'

U, my friend are a frigging legend. :notworthy At last someone who values Rock music.
I was wondering if you have tried listening to... Iron Maiden, AC/DC Led Zeppelin, Dragonforce, Dio
give em a try u'll like !!! :rawk:
AC/DC and Led Zeppelin aren't metal... I am sure everyone knows them also. Dragonforce is sick, though.
Bappel
02-11-2005, 10:11 AM
They are metal. Early metal. AC/DC might be more like Hard rock, but for me they are still one of metals most respected bands. And so are LEd Zeppelin. They where the one starting it all! You must pay respect to Led, not that I dpont think that you do so, but Led must be metal. Without them you wouldnt have what everyone else thinks is metal nowadays.
Just because a band influenced a genre does not mean they are part of the genre.
Technically, The Beatles influenced hardcore. Does that make them hardcore? No.
Led Zep and AC/DC=rock.
BTW, I do like Zep and AC/DC.

I've been trying to get into some good metal lately and i got an album by Trivium called Ascendancy i think its great but a bit repetitive. i also like Iron Maiden but thats not the kind of metal i want. Are there many people out there who like Fantomas?
Bappel
03-11-2005, 10:14 AM
Czar:
I agree with that some bands that influence bands can be of other genres. But I still think that Led and AC are metal, but more like an early none heavy way. And the whole thing about putting a groupe in a genre is weird, a band can be a genre to one guy and another to another guy(this is a fact if you look at ajzz, many people have been arguing about what should be aloved to call jazz dring the years its been existing. Nowadays we consider groupes to be jazz that wasnt jazz to the old listeners when it arrived). And theres is still many badns today that I cant put in a genre. Like Mr. Bungle, they usually are considered to be metal and also crossover. I would put them as crossover, but they are still very hard to place. Just check out the variety of their records. 1st Fun/metal something. 2nd Weird/noisy/metal/weird(again). 3rd Soft/none metal/weird. Maybe that didnt help as much, you should listen to them to know what I mean. But Mr. Bungle can always be found in the metal-part of the record stores. Listen to the 3rd album and try to see how much metal you think that that is.
Oh, and Led and AC also stands in the Metal-part of record-stores.
And I wasnt saying that you didnt like them. Hope you didnt get offended.
I_triangle_rofA:
Well I said in my first post that I like Fantômas.
Whenver I am classifying something and I don't know what it is, I just put it with the genre it is closest to. If I honestly cannot think of what genre a band is I just say they are experimental but usually bands fit into a genre or at least a branch of it.

Hmmm I find it hard to put music into a definite category as a lot of bands change from album to album but a few I like are Cathedral, Voivod, Venom, Motorhead, Sepultura, although I don’t think Motorhead are really metal and most of them just have elements of metal in them, I usually think of Lemmy as more of a rock god.
What I really hate is when people like make up new categories like nu metal. I mean not only can they not spell but then they go and classify stuff like Linkin park as metal when the lazy children have only ever made like one album and then just change it slightly and release it 12 more times.

Lemmy's the king of rock 'n' roll - he told me he never considered Motorhead a metal band, he was quite adamant.
...if they can be trusted...I guess it depends on what you define as metal and who gets to say what the band are. I agree that there are a lot of things about them that are metal but even though someone helps to start something doesnt mean they are it.

Three words for you. Horse The Band. Same kind of music, but more of an insane streak.

The Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Converge, Horse the Band, Bloodsimple, Vision of Disorder, Isis, Mastodon, Slipknot, System of a Down, Tomahawk, Apartment 26, Tool.... then a few bands that may not nescessarily be considered metal... Thrice, Alexisonfire.
If anyone knows of any bands that compare to Dillinger, lemme know... havn't really been able to compare much to them, although i could be bias cos they are the first hard metal / sceaming type band that i got into... they pretty much introduced me to a whole new genre of music. Botch & Converge come semi-close but not quite ;p
Yeah, Botch and Converge are the most similar to DEP.
I am just tossing out some bands that you might dig but these bands are kinda like DEP:
His Hero is Gone (metalcore)
Bucket Full of Teeth (power violence, very technical like DEP and has screaming vocals, one of my favorite bands because just like DEP they are extremely original)
The Locust (techno/metal, very technical like DEP, on the same record label)
Red Rocket Fiasco (power violence/grind, not as similar as the others but still very technical)
The Sawtooth Grin (power violence/tech metal, technical, very high pitch scream, one of my favorite bands ever)
That's all I got.

This thread is important. Do not let it die.
For the guy who asked for Dillinger Escape Plan style bands, check out Ion Dissonance. They're less musical than DEP, but they're more out of control.
If you don't like the new Cryptopsy, then get a job.

The thread is back! OMG!
I've been delving into the world of metal to discover I quite like....
System Of A Down
Trivium
Avenged Sevenfold (are they metal?)
Bullet For My Valentine
Arch Enemy
Slipknot (some of it, some of their songs are shit on a stick)
Pantera
Mastodon
And that's about it. Yet to buy many albums though, just odds and ends off KERRANG! CDs, iTunes, Compilations, etc.
A7X is not a metal band. They are an alternative rock band.

A7X is not a metal band. They are an crappy band that used to be mint (waking the fallen).
fixed.
Edit: Horse the band eh? Got there tunes. Cutsman is ace.
Actually, I never liked Avenged Sevenfold.
Horse The Band is a bunch of jerks. They thought they weren't getting paid enough, so they didn't play until they got money. The club owner had to take money from some of the other bands so Horse The Band would play. Then, they were dicks the entire time and acted like they were the greatest band ever.

Oooh metal thread.
Some idiot got me into Megadeth, I've listened to Rust In Peace and The System Has Failed and bought their Greatest Hits album... I've made it my aim to slowly nick all of his music collection :p I heard a bit of The Berzerker which I quite liked, he gave me A Vulgar Display Of Power by Pantera last week. I'm not too keen on it.
So basically I'm wondering what to go for next. He has all sorts of stuff, but I'm a bit lost in it all. I'm looking for something fairly fast and heavy, help me out?

Pantera sucks.
If you're looking for something like The Berzerker, in the sense of really hard and fast music, check these bands out...
Pig Destroyer
Nasum
Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Vital Remains
Cryptopsy
If you're looking for more of a thrash-metal thing, like Megadeth, check these bands out...
Slayer
Overkill
Anthrax
Stormtroopers of Death
EARLY Metallica (Master of Puppets is the best)
At the Gates
I am confident that you will enjoy most, if not all, of those bands.

I'm gonna bash out their praises again but:
Hard and fast? Sikth. Can't really get much harder or faster. And I'm positive you can't get a band that changes their time signature as often in a single song.

Not heard them, but I might have to try them out. Fact remains, Sikth are awesome. And I'm willing to bet they have better lyrics, seeing as so far in my explorations into metal they are the only band I've heard that has good lyrics

Opeth. THE metal band. Great guitars, great drums, the best grunts, great clean vocals. I listen to loads of bands,. but none beat Opeth. Although Dream Theater is pretty close.

i have gone through a long drawn out metal phase, that stretched from the age of 6 (in 1986) all the way up to... currently. the thing is - and why i don't consider myself versed in modern metal at all - there's not a single band I listen to from the genre that didn't "start up" after the period from the late 60's on to the late 70's.
The true irony is that I myself am a product of the late 70's. The last few days, to be exact. So most peaked before I was even born.

I figured this would be the best place to put this:
29.01.2006 Bye, and thanks for all the fish...
With a heavy heart I bring you the following news: In a band meeting one hour ago I was fired as a singer of Finntroll. Reasons are many and for the most part private, but personal differences and lack of discussion have led my bandmates to doubt my commitment for this band. I believe this will be discussed widely in the following days and more info will undoubtedly be out soon for your viewing pleasure. I will only say the following: These past three years have been the best times of my life and I want to thank all the friends I've gained from this, crews past and present, supporters who came to our shows and shared the good and the bad times. I will always cherish you in my heart. Thanks for my now ex-bandmates for sharing this experience with me. Life goes on and wounds will heal. The future remains to be seen.
Thank all of you and see you sometime, somewhere.
