I'm very surprised I couldnt find a thread on this.... Rosa Parks, legendary black human rights sparker-offer has passed away. Or did so 2 days ago now... Full obituary c/o the beeb at their site (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4374288.stm) and as usual i've said a few words on my site (http://www.tehblog.co.uk)
The end of an era.

People such as this should serve as an example to all mankind.
It's moments like hers that move humanity forward.
I remember when acting this in drama last year, being fairly stunned that she was still alive.
The bus rule was utterly stupid. I respect her for standing up to it.

It's pretty amazing to think what she sparked off that day :)
Who knows maybe without her there might not be such a powerful figure in Martin Luther King, he may have remained an unknown Baptist minister.

Or rather, sitting down on it. guffaw.... *silence.... :ninja:*
Ahem, anyway, this woman was inspirational, and remember this was a mere 50 years ago this was happening.
Only 50 years ago america thought it was ok to treat non-whites as second class citizens.

I've got to say I was surprised at the lack of media coverage, I only saw articles on websites and nothing on TV or in the newspapers, which does make me feel a bit sad.
Goodbye Mrs Parks, you've left a great legacy.

Completely agree PMMike. Wonderful woman full of spirit and an absolute icon that spawned many others to take up the fight against segregation.
RIP.

May her memory and legacy live on in the equality she helped to exist.
And yes, there hasnt been enough coverage. Its a shame ordinary people who do great things are often forgotten.

There was a double centre fold spread in the guardian yesterday with a photo of Ms Parks sitting at the front of a bus. One of the most famous ones. I've saved that one for sure.

You didn't watch Channel 4 news then?
there was about a 5 minute section...
Also RIP, she was just a bit important to civil rights.

I'm sure she did everybody proud!
Only 50 years ago america thought it was ok to treat non-whites as second class citizens.
All the change is on the face of it, unfortunately. It seems that even though the originators of the equal rights movement have passed away, still not enough time has passed for different coloured people to be treated the same. It's not just a lame cliche that black people get pulled over by cops all the time, and the US is still home to the KKK and ludicrously conservative Christian factions that think black people are anything less than human.
I am ashamed that she has died of old age before she could see the proper conclusion of what she started.

The propper conclusion will not come in any of our lifetimes, I belive. The world has come a long way, but prejudice still remeins and it will take a couple of generations to get rid of it. It may never truly be destroyed.

There is some irony to the fact that white people are no longer the majority in America as there is officially more spaniads.
