View Full Version : How far, and how long?

Right. I want to ask everyone a question or six - it's one I'm mulling over at the moment myself. Quite simply, how far do you travel to work/school/college etc., and how long does it take you, and secondly, how far would you travel, on a daily basis, for the right job/course/sandwich*/whatever, and for how long?

I'm asking this because I have to decide whether or not to stay in my current job, and the only thing really counting against it is the travelling, and the amount that travelling costs. Moving is not an option. I'm also adding a little survey for travel time only (in total, per day), as this would probably be more important to most people than distance.

Let's hear what your limits are.

*OK, maybe not the sandwich. It's further than anything else, I know.

takes 30 mins to college on bus. about an hour and half by train (due to distance from staion and having to walk to it)

Work is 15min walk down the road or about a 5minute cycle.

Not that hard really.

Getting to University for me comprises of the following:

10mins bus jounrney (plus wait time for it to arrive)
10min wait at train station
40min - 60min train jounrney (dependant on the train I get)
15min walk to uni itself.

Average Jouney time 1:30 hours.

it takes me about a 20 minute walk to get to school, but I know someone who travels 20 miles a day to get to the same school... in the end, if you like the job, go.

I used to do 3 hours a day on a bus for college, 5 days a week. Was worth it, but only way I stuck it out was as I had my MP3 player. I'd go for it as long as you tink it's gonna benefit you.

It's only a short 30 mins for me.

I dont drive, so my bf or best friend drive me. As they are on the same corse as me.

It helps. Alot!

I take about 4 buses a day to college and back, works out about two hours to college and back, with a waiting period for buses inbetween avereging of 10 minutes to an hour. About 16 buses a week as i don't do fridays.

As for travel costs, i currently have a pass for most of the town buses, which was around £130 odd for three months (i think)

25 minutes drive to work and 20 minutes to return becuase traffic is quieter ;)

I would happily comute to London everyday if I got a job marketing films or as a buyer for a film company so that would gve me a round commute of 2.5 hours per day but it would be worth it ;)

Takes me about 1hour and 10 mins depending.

Bus journey to station is about 10 mins, I have to wait about 15 mins for the train, that takes 20/25 minutes and there's a 10 minute walk at the other end. Which is actually 50 minutes. Because I arrive 20 minutes early.

I think it depends on how you are getting there. I wouldn't drive or bike more than 30 minutes, but I would commute by train for 2 or so hours. Longer if I was assured a seat.

It's a 40 minute walk or a 20 minute bus ride into Uni for me. How far would I travel? For however long it took to get me there - although I'd be unlikely to move in somewhere that was miles away from uni in the first place.

I may possibily be going to Glasgow Caledonian Uni after I hav finished school, so I will prbably take the bus into town and walk it from there.

Bus journey - 40 - 50mins (traffic variations) + waiting time
Add to that the time it takes o walk there from the bus station, should be about an hour.

But to school is a 10-min walk, slightly shorter if I "jump the gate".

I wouldn't spend more than an hour travelling each way, otherwise you'd waste your entire day travelling and working.

Same here, I'd crack up in the car :(

I actually walk 30 minutes every day to work and 30 minutes back home. On Fridays, being that I have to go to and fro twice, I spend 2 hours of that day just walking to and from work, it's worth it cause I get paid but it's quite tiring :)

Stay fit and healthy though... :)

Just as long as I can go on the bus, and let my mind wander and my pants disintegrate while I travel, I don't really mind. However, anything more than an hour each way is simply wasting valuable time I could be spending trying to work out what the best class is on Nethack with an oh-so-geeky spreadsheet, and I would have to move closer, move it closer (I have friends high up in the explosives industry), or find somewhere else that won't take me too far from my beloved, beautiful, and downright sexy computer.

My uni is a 20 minute walk away from me, I work over 35 miles away and it takes just over half an hour in the car

Depending on whether it's school holidays, or whether the roads are chocka with urban parents 'safely' navigating the roads in their big 4x4s because any other vehicle just won't cut the bastarding mustard....

this equals - between 20-45 mins to get to work.

Having lived in London, and then returned to my home town (Hull!), I find that the differences in attitudes to travelling astounding.

At one point, I commuted for 90 minutes each way (if the tubes were running well) and thought nothing of it - it was a good chance to read, and meant I could live somewhere semi-decent for an affordable price.

In Hull, people in general don't seem to understand that and, in my experiences anyway, would rather stick in a semi-decent job instead of travelling to, for example, York (45 minutes car/bus) for a larger wage and perhaps a better job.

I think that, as long as you come out ahead financially, travelling isn't really a burden as long as you're ultimately happy.

I've got a friend who commutes from Oxford to London everyday. Thats sommat like 3 hours+ travelling time... I think he is a nutcase.

Me? I live 2 minutes from work and 5 minutes from sandwiches.

I currently travel for 10 minutes to a crap job, so I'm more than happy to Drive to the Birmingham business park to pursue a better job. It's going to take me about 45 minutes each way, but having lived in the outskirts of London, and done the 90 minute commute into the city, I don't see it being that bad. At least I get to sit in the comfort of my car.

Seeing as I asked the question...

It currently takes me up to an hour and a half to drive to work (assuming my car doesn't break down), and up to three hours (usually more like an hour and a half) to get home. It's 62.5 miles each way. So that's occaisionally more than four hours driving for little more than eight hours work.

Public transport is not available, unless I set out the night before (roughly the same time as public transport would get me home). Annoyingly, the job is enjoyable, but the pay isn't good.
