View Full Version : You do the football, we'll do the beer
Anyone seen this advert? It's a Budweiser advert. What they do is "ruin" football by putting an American spin on it. They combine City and United; they send Arsenal to the Midlands where there are no people; they rename teams so they have dramatic names like Portsmouth Pirates.
Then they relent, and decide it's not such a good idea, and they should stick to doing the beer.
The problem is, Budweiser is shite, and all the things they do to football are good! I mean, look at American sporting events. They're very crowd-centred. They're all about the entertainment value of the sport itself; on the other hand we have the British football industry, which is all about making money and beating up fans of the other teams.
American sports have a lot of companionship. There's a lot of fair play behaviour both on and off the field. In football, the most you get is some kids get to kick the ball about on the pitch or walk on as the team "mascot", in some pretence that the club cares about its fans.
And then you have British beers. Full-bodied, tasty even when warm. Made to be drunk, not to make you drunk. Not full of fizz or piped through taps by gas. Real ales made in real casks by people who really care about the product rather than the marketing or the getting-pissed value of it. I mean, let's face it, anything you get through a gas pump is designed to be drunk fast in quantity to get you leathered, and that's becoming a major problem in England these days. Too many people getting pissed at football matches and then staggering outsite and breaking some innocent fan's jaw.
So how about this: you do the football; we'll do the beer. I think it's best for everyone.
Am I wrong?

How about neither. Am I the only one that gets the same tast
And really...american sport is ALL about commercialization. Theres no real difference in fair play either...it's not like in football you see players slagging eachother off. Sometimes the odd comment comes out that might be deemed disrespectful or plain ignorant *cough*Jose*cough*, but theres ALOT of respect between all football clubs.
American sport is just how you put it. It's not sport at all, it's entertainment marketed as a sport. Sport can be entertaining without being the mass commercial specticle that is most american sports.
The adverts are funny though.

How about we do the football we do the beer.
When i live in America i had no interest in Baseball or American football. Kids used to think i was weird, because instead of playing baseball i was doing keepy ups with a football. The commercialism of it all just made me avoid it. Americans love commercial stuff that's why its so famous. Think about it how cheesy are cheerleaders?
I agree on the beer part though ;)
Aww...but i really, really, really want to see ADDED TIME MULTIBALL! ;)

The more commercialized the sport is the more it's about making money, surely?
I agree with Captain, even though I don't like football myself.

Screw that, I don't want a commercial break every time the ball goes off for a corner, and people calling time outs to discuss the tactics of the goal kick they're about to take.
How about I stick their beer up their arse, and we do the football.

American sport is a joke really isnt it. I tried watching the superbowl last time and gave up after 7 minutes of play. I just couldnt stand it. I want to watch the fucking game! I would not buy anything you try to sell me when you are disturbing me watching a sport. It just wouldnt be tolerated in England. But I do agree, we should have extra time multiball and Arsenal should move to the Peak District. That would make things a little more interesting :p

I actually liked the "Portmouth Pirates" that looks fantastic. And really, not a huge football fan myself, why is there Man United and Man City? I know there's a whole grudge against the two, but it's one city, why not just stand united? (those puns in that sentence weren't written like that).
I think changing football for the fun side of things would definately get more people watching it, even I might give it a go :D At the moment I only watch it for the men and their balls... :)

Let Americans do the football? Don't be ridiculous, they'll put shoulder pads on and add poncey time-outs to the game. And i don't want flags being thrown all over my pitch either. How about we'll do the football and we'll do the beer?
