I love a lot of emo bands

but for those who do not know... care to explain what emo is, and name some good bands to try out if you want to explore the genre?

nothing wrong with emo, makes good background music but can tend to get a bit whingy and a lot of the bands sound the same.

Hmm elevator music... Anyway yes it does get a tad whingy and because I have a low tollerance for things like that it drives me nuts.

emo stands for 'emotional'.
it is basically a spin off from the punk/hradcore sence of the early ninties. the first band to be truely labelled emo where sunny day real estate, a band from seattle. their first album, diary, is considered to be the seminal emo album.
however, emo is one of those musical genres that doesn't really have any major characteristics. the two things you need to have to be an emo band are whiny lyrics, that are often (seemingly) deep and meaningful and punky riffs. by this choice of words, bands such as fugazi, embrace (not the british mid nineties oasis rip off one, the mid eighties Dischord one), dag nasty and rites of spring are all emo bands. (sorry about me suddenly name dropping huge numbers of dischord bands there, but they are considered to be the forerunners of emo)
bands such as the get up kids, dashboard confessional, bright eyes, cursive and sunny day real estate are the ones i would recommend to listen to first off. Emo also has a whole culture of dress associated with it, namely big NHS style glasses, greasy hair or shaved head, loud shirts, cords and converse high-tops. the straight edge culture (no cigarettes, booze, drugs) is also massively associated with emo bands and culture

of course, don't take my word for it, my choices of band are probably totally different from other people who listen to emo...
here is a fairly good websitehttp://www.fourfa.com/index.html

Screamo is ok. Emo is good if you are referring to REAL Hardcore Emo, such as the Swing Kids and Antioch Arrow.

Current Emo is just acoustic bullshit.

I like "emo" I hate the term. It just sounds like it's trying to hard. Sebadoh.......Now THAT'S an "emo" band. Holy crap! so emo, Soul and Fire can make my shed a wee tear.

Just found out that Alkaline Trio are considered emo. Never thought they would be. Possibly a bit more kinda standard pop-punk or punk-rock.

I like Emo. Many of my friends don't. The Ataris are excellent, as are Saves The Day, and Dashboard Confessional have some good tunes.

Anyone heard of Taking Back Sunday? That's some good emo.

christine
08-01-2004, 06:02 PM
Truthfully, what I hear a lot of people call Emo punk, I call pop. I think the Ataris and Jimmy eat world are thinly disguised pop bands. This is not to say I don't like this kind of music, I just really think the "punk" term is thrown around too much with little regard for what the essence of what "punk" is. Okay, lecture over.

ps. don't get me started on the Offspring. They are neither punk nor even nu punk. I think they are failed metalheads.

christine
08-01-2004, 06:37 PM
Hope you didn't take that Offspring comment personally. I think I may have liked them in the beginning for a few minutes, but I just don't think they hold a candle to other bands of that ilk ie: Bad Religion.

mr jones

offspring were once a good bad, but they sholuld of quit while they were ahead. like oh so many bands, as soon as they went mainstream their style changed and they sucked

christine

Mr. Jones I think you may have hit the proverbial nail on the head. It's true in many cases when a band hits the big time/"sells out" whatever, they end up sucking poo. Thank dog Superchunk never hit the REAL big time (grin)

Alright, I'll give you guys some GOOD emo bands, way better than Dashboard or TBS.

Find:
Bright Eyes
Pedro the Lion

And if you guys are into Hardcore Emo, check out these bands:
Swing Kids
At the Drive-In (more indie, whatever)
Antioch Arrow
Orchid

I can't think of any more cause I kinda grew out of Emo like a year ago. Now my musical taste has evolved into hardcore.

edit - my sig was removed. this is bs.

I love pedro the lion. I've got 'control' and 'it's hard to find a friend'. both are amazing. saving to buy 'winners never quit' just now.
He has sooooo many ep's out.

I dunno, I don't even listen to them anymore. I realized that most emo was boring/depressing/poorly done. Those are the 2 best "new" emo bands that I can think of. Hardcore is my music of choice now, however.

Cherokee Red

it is depressing, but it's good for when you're in that sort of mood. That's me almost 24/7 though, so that's probably why I love it! :p

i find music labels horrible. it seems every new band ou tonow is in a new genre.

i had a sunny day realestate album but a friends stole it;/

i clicked what's emo, but it sounds alright to me. i guess i can't jusdge a whole genre by one band, especially now that genres are so crazy.

I hate it, along with punk-rock, its low technical ability a whiney powerless vocals both bore and irritate me, along with the monotinous

dominatrix
23-01-2004, 11:13 PM
nah i don't like emo but what i really hate is when you read that some band you like is 'alternative metal' in one mag and 'emo' in the other.

why do they have to label music so much that there are 2 names for something that sounds the same, wwhhhhhhhyyyyy???

fishingfrog
24-01-2004, 02:12 AM
Thats exactly why you can't label too many bands in a genre. There are a lot of bands that were considered emo (i.e. At the Drive-In) but they weren't emo at all. They were just ahead-of-their-time current Screamo, like sparta is now.

I hate how people say they hate "punk-rock" because of the whiney vocals and powerchords. Shut the fuck up. Punk-Rock is almost as vague as saying "Pop music", or "rock". There are so many different sub-genre's that you can't say you hate them all because of a few bands. It covers a wide variety of music types, from Hardcore to Emo, Screamo to Indie, Old Punk to Pop Punk, etc.

I mean, all of these bands can be labeled "punk-rock":
the Misfits
Blink 182
Thrice
Thursday
Mars Volta
Rancid
Pedro the Lion
Bright Eyes
At the Drive-In
Good Charlotte

But if you've listened to all of those bands you'd know that many of them are very very different from each other.

Cherokee Red

well said. i hate generalisations for bands these days.
if someone asks me what kind of music i write, i can't tell them cos it varies so much. i end up just saying acoustic.
a reason i hated mp3.com aswell. they wanted you to specify what genre your music was before you could upload it.

bigmother
24-01-2004, 02:35 AM
right. seriously. I think that a lot of bands considered emo are really seriously not ( I think mars volta are better than sparta by a long way) and that punk is used a lot too loosely these days. I mean when you start calling the offsrping and blink 182 punk is when religion dies or whatever.

If I was asked for an emo band I would say bush or something

If you were going to say emotional music I would Kimya Dawson (Moldy Peaches) because she makes me actually feel sad or happy about a song (emotion for those of you who don't understand this much-used term "emo")

seriously though, emo is a much overused and mis-interprited term (drunk, please forgive misspelling).

enjoy music for your enjoyment not the style or "brand"

good evening to you!

Finally, another Mars Volta fan. I used to have a TMV sig but they removed it.
