Have you heard yet? MSN is splitting it's work into two. Probably to prepare for the release of Vista. MSN is now gonna be centered around Content, Music and that sort of stuff, whereas Windows Live is their way of Splitting-off Communication and Sharing in a different Direction.
Windows Live is a content-style system while is little Like your Computers 'Home Page.' It will have what they call 'Gadgets', a little bit Like Widgets, but Internet Based.

Windows Live Messenger, is just MSN Messenger Livened up and in a new wrapper, MSN8.0 is being replaced by WLM8. May not necessarily be called that...
All they have for that ATM is a Blog for it, and a Private BETA for MSDN subscribers.
WIndows Live Mail is MSN Hotmail, with a new look, same accounts, and it's Updated LIVE. No Refreshing the page, as it will be streaming Inbox data, live. You can currently request to join the BETA List.
That's why they call it 'Windows LIVE'

Hope this clears things up for you.

Wait so this will replace MSN8?
Why?
They ramble on about OMG U CAN WEBCAM AND HAVE SOUND AND EMOTICONS OMG but you already can on msn8 anyway so what's the point?
The hotmail bit sounds good but I think I'll avoid the messenger bit if that screenshot in LWIF is real...

Maybe that's just their way of saying...
"Just to make you happy we'll mention the name, and completely forget about it."
Anyways, I think this is pretty dumb. Is it going to effect MSN 8 software users or anything like that?
I want to know how they're going to make everything compatible, like with the MSN software and stuff.
Edit: I just logged into it and it's pretty plain so far. Meh. I don't think I'm going to like it.
Edit2: It's just like another My MSN.

Microsoft should make the new messenger skinnable... then people won't be particularly arsed about changing over as it could still look nice and they won't have wasted millions on developing the waste of time.

Millions of our kind of money is like a couple cents to Microsoft.
They can afford it. :nana:

I think the Live website looks quite good at the moment, a handy homepage (once Firefox is fully supported...)
I'm also intrigued by what this new email thingy will be.

mail isnt interesting at all,i logged in and its extremely boring.
The WLM 8 is ugly. i plan on using some form of plugin added on the msgplus to make it look half decent.
Orange is only good on these boards.

live.com supports Firefox now
http://thomashawk.com/2005/11/windows-live-now-supports-firefox.html
I will only trust it when it comes out on the offical microsoft website. This may be like the Unofficial microsoft service pack 3 update. dont trust 3rd party. Also, the official vertion is comming out in a short while.

Just thought i'd post some eye-candy.
WLM Sign-In Window (http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2632/msnsignin4fj.gif)
WLM Main Window (http://img430.imageshack.us/img430/8910/msnmain2oz.gif)
WLM Conversation Window (http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/1603/msnconvo9ew.gif)
The orange bits at the top are able to change colour using the paint bucket thing near the top. The send button on the Conversation Window also changes to adapt to the colour change, as do the Handwriting/Text buttons at the bottom left.
If you want any more pics of stuff, like Option menus and crap just let me know.
Edit : The gradients are actually much nicer in the title bars and buttons, just crappy save format, sorry.

Here's a little story. I first had MSN 1. I was very cute. On it you could do the following wonderful things:
Chat.
...
No that was it. All you could do on a chat program was... well chat.
Then came later versions. They never really changed anything they just re-skinned it and added more stuff. File transfer, more emoticons and so on. Every release was just a re-skin and a new feature. This continued upto version 5. At version 6 was when they fucked up. Suddenly they added a whole load of shit. MSN went from what was a fairly slick small application to a resource hog with display pictures, custom emoticons, more webcam support that worked worse and used more resources... it all went downhill with the unessicary additions. Then they completely screwed it in version 7. The thing that still mostly worked ok was the ability to chat. Version 7 pops up aaaaand... they've changed the protocol, guess what? They've fucked it up. They added a push protocol... that didn't work, they tried to modify default protocols seemingly without having a clue and guess what? It messed everything up. The beta actually took people's internet down. Not their connection, their ability to use it, it would mess up networking and you'd have to restart your computer to fix it. They buggered up about the only thing that worked well all the way through... and to add... nudges and winks (¬_¬). Yay. Worth it
So... MSN 8, lets see:
They're going to re-skin it
They're going to break something
They're going to try and remedy the protocol problems and make it worse
They're going to add a whole lot more shit to miss me off.
I'm just finishing off my new Unix MSN client, the default one makes me so angry I want to break things. I'm programming it to nudge-spam anyone who nudges/winks me without even telling me it's doing it ¬_¬. Here's to hoping they don't completely fuck the protocol up...
Microsoft should make the new messenger skinnable... then people won't be particularly arsed about changing over as it could still look nice and they won't have wasted millions on developing the waste of time.
It is an always has been if you know how :p

What i've been waiting for - for a long time now - is the ability to issue custom names to contacts. I don't particularly want to know lyrics from some shit emo song every time someone talks to me :p
Trillian and ICQ etc have had the feature for years and years. I remember renaming my contacts to something more sensible in ICQ98b fs.
Though as timmeh said, they'll probably cock around, do something "inventive", fuck a few other things up and call it "version 8". If you ask me, Messenger 3.6 was the best one around. And it was bundled with Windows Me. woo!

Gaim has been able to assign custom names to people for years, hasn't it?

This will just confuse people. Why split MSN up? People see MSN as an international icon... thing... and to change it to Windows Live Messenger is going to upset, and generally confuse, a lot of the population
